The work units are roughly 20-100MB each. It varies depending on the particular work unit.
You only connect to the servers when you are first downloading a work unit and then again when you are submitting a finished work unit. While you are processing the work unit (which can take a few hours) it does not need to connect to the servers.
Since the file sizes are relatively small and it isn't always downloading/uploading it shouldn't have any noticeable impact on the rest of the people using the internet.
