So, new version of F@H that allows you to select COVID-19 as what you are dedicated to fighting, as well as "security updates."

It also refuses to see the 2060 in my Area 51m.

What version of the client did you get? 7.6.8 or 7.6.9?

FYI, when the updated client announcement was made the new Version was 7.6.8. There is now version 7.6.9 available on the website. Not sure what changed.

Now not only many users are reporting that this update fails to install, but few other users who installed it are even facing serious issues like deletion of files from C drive, disabling of microphones, camera & USB ports, defender shutting down and many other issues like slow performance.

    Source: TheWinCentral

This update is way worse than I thought, hopefully Microsoft patches everything soon.

Per the article there are multiple issues outlined, but at least one of them has nothing to do with the KB. Defender crashing was a known issue 3 days ago that was due to a bad AV Engine update. To fix it all you have to do is install the latest definition file. The MS Answer forum links in the article have the fix for this listed three days ago but it would appear the author of the article did not want to actually read through the forum post and check whether there was a solution to the issue, just publish an article to get everyone freaking out.

Relevant 3 day old Article describing the issue:

    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-defender-broken-by-recent-updates-how-to-fix/

The reported internet speed, program freezing, and system performance are most likely due to Defender crashing in the background and trying to fill up the event logs with failed scan attempts. (Same issues seen when I was testing the issue 3 days ago for work and all went away after correcting the Defender issue)

I have this update running on 6 personal systems and ~300 work systems with no issues. Will be deploying this KB to ~15000 work systems (37 different system models) next week with no concerns.

Not saying there isn't an issue, (MS has had plenty of issues with updates) just that this seems to currently be affecting a small number of systems and many are blaming at least some of their issues on the KB when they are at least only partially unrelated loosely related at best.

  3. In case it was missed, Update from EOC. LTT call out for the work server build video and team production. The video with Dr. Bowman was pretty interesting as well.

Literally in the span of a week, according to the FAH Client Stats you guys have DOUBLED the processing power and now have exceeded 2.3 (x86)exaFLOPs!

The new totals (compared to those I posted LESS than a week ago): 117,103 AMD GPUs (47.30%up.v1.gif) / 535,769 Nvidia GPUs (50.47%up.v1.gif) / 1,205,450 CPUs (102.94%up.v1.gif)

A couple cool videos on YouTube, first is from the Financial Times interviewing Dr. Bowman and a little talk about the Folding@Home project and the science behind it. Second video is from Linus Tech Tips where Linus shows off the Folding@Home WS Server they built and is currently part of the F@H Server Pool, helping to send out all those work units to all you guys keeping those GPUs & CPUs busy!

As for recent team production, it looks like Linus Tech Tips Team is currently in the lead, with the Default Team trying to keep pace, but the big surprise is AWSFolds sneaking up from the back of the pack and putting on the heat against the other top teams! If AWSFolds continues to ramp up like they have been we might have a new top contender! There were a couple times late 2017 / early 2018 where CureCoin broke 60 BILLION points produced in a month... It looks like that record *could* get shattered this April by any (or all) of these top 3 teams if they can keep up the pace!

Right lets get back on topic...

How are you all doing today with the WU flow?

Have had no issues getting WU. Appears there may have been a hiccup in the stats server last night as i got 5.8 million points and 53 WU complete at 3am and only did 6 Million PPD yesterday with 74 WU. (normally average 9 Million PPD with 100-150 WU) 🤔 Nothing has been idle according to my HFM.NET install. 🤷‍♂️Back to Work.

Gee. I have an open PCIe slot in my Win10 daily driver and in my KVM system but that one is in a Fractal Core 1100 and even with a Noctua iPPC2000 running full-bore tends to get a little hot with a GPU in it.

    Must resist urge ...

My next purchase will probably be a 3900x or 3950x to replace the 2700 in my x570 Pro WiFi

Well if I could go to the office I could have an Epyc 2nd gen server built by this weekend, but it doesn't look like that will happen for at least 3 to 4 weeks.

This is why you don't run F@H on:

    1) a desktop

    2) any Win-OS version for more then 5 mins and

    3) any combination of the above

    🤨

Hmmmm, I must be the exception then since i am running F@H on 4 desktops and a laptop all running Windows 10 that have been running full bore for 11 straight days and counting with no issues churning out 9 to 10 million PPD. 🤔

No, having a system sitting there generating 150kPPD from the Ryzen 2700 with two available PCIe x16 slots just waiting on Video Cards is just sad ☹️

So what I'm hearing you say is I should order another 5700XT to put in my system that only has one in it and a free PCIe 16x slot. 😉

I'm sad just not being able to do more work to fight this thing.

I can understand that. Putting together a plan for a new Epyc server system myself, unfortunately wont be able to pull that together until well after the competition.

And after being locked in the house for three days with the famdamily I might be going just a little stir crazy 🤪

I feel for you on that. Starting week 3 here of work from home only and just finished the first of 3 weeks of, "stay at home unless you need groceries".

  8. Update from EOC: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/

Small update for Sunday.03.29.20, 2:26pm CDT

Before I get too many emails asking why there are negative WUs in the "aggregate stats", there is a simply answer to that. I'm tracking the top 12,000 teams, when a newer active team moves up in the ranks and pushes an older inactive team below that threshold, the old team is deleted from the database. Take a look at the last page, you will notice how a lot of the older teams have anywhere from 2k - 10k WUs, and a newer team with equivalent points might have only 50 WUs. There seems to be a change in about 100 teams per-day that get swapped out.

Second, there's been a few people nagging me about adding some social media links, so I finally got that done, they are on the left sidebar and the URLs should be unique to each page. The social image is a screenshot of the specific page so if you share / like your team page then that's what will be shown. If you want some other specific social link, send me an email and I'll see what I can do.

Third, for all the people that have been emailing me complaining where are their points and what's going on. Let me be clear: I am in no way affiliated with Bowman Lab, Washington University, or the official F@H project. I'm just a regular guy like all of you, and I get all my information from all the same public resources. Sorry but I can't do anything about missing points, server problems, or any of that stuff.

To answer a bunch more of the same questions I get daily now:

Someone: Why (insert anything F@H related here)
Me: Because the servers are overloaded from the massive increase in participation.
Someone: Why haven't they added more servers?
Me: They have, and continue to do so. But the servers continue to be overloaded from the massive increase in participation.

To put things into perspective, here's a user total from the aggregate stats page. The project gained a couple hundred thousand participants in a very short amount of time! It went from ~8k active participants to over 170k, and growing!

    Aggregate Total Users 3.29.20

Nothing else major to really report, just fixing bugs here and trying to answer everyone's emails.

I have a whole pile of post-it notes of things I still need to fix... so back to work!

I can pull 3.15kW out of my 10 solar panels.  Common house mains without solar would still allow for 200 amps x 240 volts or 48kW before tripping the main breaker.  So, you just need to make sure the sub circuits are shuffled around appropriately.  A single phase common household 20 amp breaker will do about 2kW forever, so just 2 circuits will get crankin' no problem.

Yeah, my limiting factor is cooling. Have 3 of the systems in a small bedroom the rest are in the living room. Have the patio door cracked open to pull cold outside air in (the other 6 systems are sitting right next to the patio door) and a 24" window fan in the small bedroom blowing out to pull the air through. Leaves me limited to the circuits i can plug into. Still have to be able to work from home so I have to have some place that doesn't have cooling fans screaming.

@Valentyn told you... no sanity here

Sooooo, checked my power draw due to a warm circuit breaker. (had to move some systems to a different circuit) I'm pulling ~3.6 Kw.😬 Yeah, sanity is out the window.🤪 Electric bill is going to be just a little higher this next month, like an order of magnitude higher.

    Fold on everything you've got!!!

Fine...I resurrected a dual Opteron 32 core server with two HD 6970's. Another ~60,000 PPD.

  12. Interesting update over on EOC: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/

LTT got a mention for the "Here's How YOU Can Help Find a Cure for COVID-19!" video.

More interesting is this bit from the F@H forums reported by EOC:

    Here's a summary of current Folding@Home situation:

    • We know about the work unit shortage
    • It's happening because of an approximately 20x increase in demand
    • We are working on it and hope to have a solution very soon.
    • Keep your machines running, they will eventually fold on their own.
    • Every time we double our server resources, the number of Donors trying to help goes up by a factor of 4, outstripping whatever we do.
