  1. I don't think memory would be the issue here unless it's faulty (run a memtest overnight https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/how-to-test-ram). The manufacurers usually list a few components that they have tested themselves or some of their partners did, but if the device is compatible with the standard on paper it should work. (goes for all devices like pcie cards, ram modules, sata, etc.) If you have a friend with a compatible PC swap the memory and GPU one by one to see if you can repeat the problem. If you're constantly getting the display driver error than it might be the GPU / the driver. Uninstall the drivers and do it all over again. If it's a new build and it doesn't solve anything I might do a completly fresh installation of the OS if the driver reinstall didn't work.
  2. Hi, I bought a Supermicro CSE-836 rack chassis without knowing what kind of PDB it had inside and now I'm not sure what is the best way to connect my GPU (GTX 1070). It has two PWS-721P-1R PSUs and a PDB-PT825-8824 power distributor. 1. My prefered option would be to buy a new PDB and PSUs that would fit the chassis and possibly allow me to upgrade the system later with a better GPU. (It would be ideal if I could fit my editing workstation inside - 7950x + 3080ti and all future configurations (This will be tricky anyway because newer GPUs are wider/taller than the standard pci-e slots in a 3U chassis unless you are looking at server components)). Do you guys have any recommendations? PSUs like PWS-1K41P-1R and PWS-1K62P-1R are very afordable but I'm having a hard time to find a compatible PDB that has a GPU cable. 2. The current PDB has a 24pin, two 8-pin CPU cables, a 4-pin , and 5? molex cables. What would be the best way to adapt these connections to an 8-pin GPU? I have two xeons e5-2670 in my system. Can one of them run off the 4-pin and I buy an EPS to PCIe cable to power the GPU? 3 molex connectors are already used for the HDD backplane and 2 of them are free, but I'm assuming that molex to 8-pin isn't a good choice.
  3. Thank you, yes I saw the adapters while I was browsing for different modules. We are already using SFP+ to RJ45 adapter for our 10Gbs network for the office.
  4. Hey, I know that you can't mix a MMF module with SMF cables, or SMF module with MMF cables, but I haven't found any articles on QSPF+ ports being only compatible with one type of module. Are they always interchangeable? I want to connect two Mikrotik's CRS326-24S+2Q+RM in two different rooms. DAC cables are not an option. On Mikrotik's website they only have a MMF module with a MTP/MPO connector (Q+85MP01D) and it is the only module on the compatibility list for this switch. Will a SMF module work with it? What are some cheap options to connect these two switches? It might acually be cheaper to connect 4 sfp+ ports and bond them...
  5. Hi, has anyone used Nvidia Voice/Broadcast to denoise audio that was already recorded - not denoising it in real time. Can it be done? How did you do it ? I have a podcast recording that has some reverb and noise and I would like to get rid of it.
  6. Oh yes, and much better value than the iMac we have. We recently got a new 2020 IMac and it's very impressive for its mac price - at least when you try to compare it to a simmilarly priced iMac Pro, MacPro or Macbook Pro 16"... This machine is about 10-20% more expensive than the 2020 Imac with i9-10910 and a 5700xt, but it has almost twice the performance in some areas - some very un-optimised things are almost the same in performance - I'm looking at you After Effects and Premiere Pro We have someone doing 3D now and my PC is almost 2,5 times faster then that iMac for rendering. It is all very impressive. I only hope I can match my editing skill with the power of this computer
  7. I can't answer you becuase I don't know, but why even bother with this if your computer is working? I just asumme my ECC memory is working it's magic. I have no reason to doubt it becouse there haven't been any problems.
  8. Haha, my boss/company ofcourse. I could never afford something like this. Look at the picture of my current home build.
  9. Hey, this won't be much of a LOG, but I just wanted to share the build I did a few weeks ago. It is my workstation at work. The whole office is Mac based so when I started working there about two years ago I had no choice but to get used to working on macs, but this time arround my boss gave me the oportunity to go with a PC (after much debate ). Because I am sometimes required to edit on set I started out by planing for a combo of a dell XPS 17 (having a lot of thunderbolt ports was a requirement because of all the thundebolt devices we use in production) and a 3700x (I knew 5000 series was coming out and would wait for it), but in the end I was told to just get a desktop for the office and we would use my old Macbook for editing on set or just get a new one. I was expecting that I would be without a GPU for a few months, but I was very lucky to find some 3080s in stock at a local shop so the GPU was one of the first things to arrive and I had to wait about 5 weeks for the rest of the system. ( + There was a whole thing with a German computer store that didn't respond to our emails and kept ignoring our request to change the shipping address and that caused a lot of frustration.) At the same time we finally recived our 10Gb/s networking equipment and storage, so I sprinkled in some photos of our new 12-bay Synology NAS and everything that goes with it. I am sorry for the bad quality of some photos, I just took some quick snaps with my phone, sometimes it was the fastest way to share it with my friends. Here are the specs for the workstation: CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970x GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra MOBO: Gigabyte TRX40 Designare RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 128GB DDR4 3000-16 K4 PSU: Super Flower Leadex 1600W 80Plus Platinum (a bit overkill I know ) SSDs: 2x GIGABYTE AORUS SSD NVMe G4 500GB PNY XLR8 SSD CS3030 M.2 NVMe 2TB (I will remove this one because I don't need it and we will use it in an external enclosure) CASE: Fractal Design Define 7 XL COOLER: Be quiet! Dark Rock PRO TR4 NIC: ASUS XG-C100C (10Gbs RJ45) Personal gear: Logitech MX Master 2S and Logitech Craft Keyboard and I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 Black Edition Headphones when I'm editing. Networking and NAS: SWITCHES: 2x Mikrotik CRS326-24S+2Q+RM Wi-Fi Router: Linksys wrt1900ac - we just moved it from our old office (before my time ) NAS: Synology RS3618xs Drives: 12 x Seagate Exos x16 16TB in RAID 6 (I know I'm takinga bit of a risk here with such a large RAID 6, but we didn't want to loose too much space) NIC: Mellanox Connectx-2 dual 10Gbs with SFP+ connectors - maybe I made a mistake here, because what I learned is, that the unsupported NIC makes the fans on the NAS run at a higher RPM "for safety" UPS: PowerWalker VFI 3000 CRM LCD The old Synology that you can see on the picture is a DS1812+ that I took offline just this week. It is filled with 8 x 3TB WD RED drives and might in the future serve as an off-site backup. (We had to get the second switch, because the NAS turned out to be too loud to have it in a closet in the office. - even though I planned the whole NAS and infrastrature in our new offices I had no input on where to put it and had to work with whatever was there. In the end we decided to relocate the NAS into our storage area in the basement - we will link the switches together with a 40Gbs fiber connection.) SO HERE IT IS: MY OFFICE WORKSTATION: I was very interasted in how would a super-ultrawide monitor fit into my workflow and I must say it is fantastic, but I am planning to put a second 27" 4k monitor above it so I can have a full-screen image of whatever I am editing on it. Do you know any good wall mounted monitor arms? It needs to to carry a Dell U2718Q, but if you know a monitor stand that can carry this massive 49" and 27" above it that would be a good solution too - even better . I have hidden the rest of the images in spoiler tabs, so that they don't open all at once
  10. Oh... I see now that with the 3000 series the 00x cpus launched earlier in the year and only the ryzen 3950x and the 2 threadrippers were released in November and then the 64 core 3990x launched in February.... Admittedly I've stopped following tech news closely a few years ago, and I'm trying to catch up now that I'm buying a PC again. If the new threadrippers aren't launching until February then I'm going to go ahead and buying the 3970x now. I've assembled quite a nice "little" workhorse Can't wait. After editing video for 2 years on a top spec macbook pro this should be quite the upgrade.
  11. Have there been any news about the launch of this generations Threadripper processors? I'm in the process of buying a workstation for the office and I'd hate to buy the 3970x now if the new generation will launch in november with the rest of the ryzen lineup (as I've seen that in previous years they both launched on the same date. ), but there is no point in waiting any longer than that for me.
  12. I like buying a quality PSU and I'm not going to skimp on that part in a 3000eur build. I still have to check it against the PSU list on the forum though. I might lower it down to a 1000w now that the 3090 in out of the picture. You are right about the motherboard. I was looking at the x570 version on the partpicker, but put the threadripper one in the basket... I need thunderbolt and 10gbs - B series motherboards don't have that. Yes I don't need the extra speed of 4.0, but I also don't need more than 2TB I agree with you on the case - the bigger fans would be quieter, but the lian-li you mentioned is not available. I look a bit more into it. I just went with something I knew and liked. RAM is at 3600MHz
  13. I would absolutely need at least two if not more thunderbolt connections on the laptop - because there are a lot of thunderbolt devices that I might need on set. That is why the only possible solution would be the XPS. I've looked at some of the AMD laptops and while they have better performance at a much lower price, they do not offer some of the premium features and build quality (presumably). I think this is the best deal I can pitch to my boss: It's about 1k more expensive than the 16" macbook that we were looking at, but this laptop should offer comparable performance (if not even better because of the GPU) and the PC is pretty much the best editing rig you can get. (apart from the 3090 i couldn't fit into the budget because of the laptop :D) What do you think. I'm still sceptical of the workflow of some things and some things not being compatibe, but I think this is how I could make it work.
  14. I just googled what ffmpeg is and what it actually does and ... F*** that. I'm not going to transcode files every time. It's true that I'm only using Davici for grading (still learning) and not delivery - meaning there are not that many different outputs, but it's too much work. Are you an editor/colorist yourself and use this workaround? Honestly I wouldn't even consider buying "thicc boi gaming laptops". Maybe something like the Dell XPS or something, but then it's again easier to just go with a macbook... I'll have to do some more research to decide. Right now it looks like I'll be stuck under the apple box a bit longer. Even though I hate "paying" so much money for mediocre performance.
  15. I've just heard DaVinci doesn't export ProRes on Windows or something? - I'll have to look into it more closely now. I know Premiere got ProRes on Windows in CC19 or maybe 20, but has AE gotten it too? Yeah, I don't know what is going to happen with the ARM thing... they are confident that they can make it work, but when I watched that conference where they announced it and they said that the programmes can be re-compiled (if that's the right term) at installation and perform just as good if not better I had a big question mark above my head It seems very unlikely to me that they will be able to bring the top tier performance with their ARM processors - in comparison with what they have in the lineup now. with intel processors and AMD graphics. If designing top tier processors would be so easy, a lot more companies would be in the game instead of just Intel, AMD and Nvidia (just remember the Intel GPUs from a few years ago) EDIT: The ARM cpus might be a great thing for lower end systems though. Most people don't need this kind of performance and apple finally won't be limited by the 60-90W power limit they set for their portable devices On the Apple side I'm looking to get either full spec 16" macbook pro (which is arguably the best portable editing machine - I also edit on set sometimes and make backups of the files ) or the new iMAC that seem quite reasonably prices for what you are getting (All that is missing I think is a more powerful GPU - that is why I think it would be great to wait if they plan on releasing an update with the new gpus )
  16. Hi guys, I want to know if somebody here has any experience with working in a mixed OS office. I work as a video editor for a video production company with all MAC systems and I have an opportunity to upgrade my workstation and I am wondering if there would be any problems regarding workflow that I'm not aware. I was given a macbook pro when I started out, but now I can make a free choice, but I don't want to have too much trouble. I'm already aware that some programs that we are using don't offer the same options on both systems and I would have to work around that somehow (Adobe suite + DaVinci). I also won't have AirDrop that comes in handy sometimes, but it doesn't always work anyway . I would also have to get some software that reads Apple formated media... Also has anyone heard any rumors about Apple updating their lineup with the AMDs new GPUs? I'd hate to see an update right as I get my new computer (Same happened with my 2018 macbook )
  17. Thats good to hear, I'll look out for the release of the wifi 6 model. What would you say are the benefits of buying my own (unifi) gateway and not just using the provided one?
  18. Have you tested the wired speed? Where is the router in relation to the computer? What is the speed if you are standing right in front of the router with your computer? What computer are you using? And like stated above by Lurick , I doubt you will be able to get gigabit on wifi
  19. This is mine. Hopefully the diagram is done OK, the days of high school where we were building networks in Packet Tracer are long gone If anyone is interested I've just posted a topic about setting up a new network for our house. I could sure use some help from you guys.
  20. Hi everyone! It's again time to upgrade/change the network configuration so I'd like some input and answers from you guys. TL;DR - What setup would you recommend for a 3 apartment building? - What makes mesh routers/switches/access points special? How do they differ from normal ones that you set up into the same network? Should I plan to go with Wifi 6 (AX) or is it still fine to go with AC? After a quick search I didn't find any wifi 6 access points just some mesh routers. What is cost effective? Those routers were very expensive and I'd need quite a few. - We are also planning to renovate and I was thinking it would be nice to have some SMART House features and gadgets and maybe even some security cameras. What should I be mindful of when planning such networks? Does the security system need a separate network / what is recommended? - What network gear would you recommend? I quite like mikrotik stuff, they usually offer the most for a low price (sometimes not the best hardware - there aren't a lot of options from them), I've heard good things about Ubiquiti APs THE PROBLEM: This is a diagram and layout of the existing network - hopefully its good enough for you to get the basic idea of how it's set up and what are some of the connected devices. Our house is divided into three apartments and each apartment has its wifi router which acts as an access point to the network of the main router on the top floor of the house. But even though they are on the same network, they each have their own SSID, because when I was setting it up I noticed that the phone or laptop doesn't switch between the routers as fast or as accurate as I would like and it's better to have the option to switch to whichever you like. In the living room of the top apartment, you are often connected to the Network 2 router which is in fact the closest router (because it's right below on the lower floor) but the connection is still slower and not as reliable as the connection to the Network1 router which is on the same floor. In the bathroom of the apartment2 (Network2) you usually stay connected to the Network2 router even though the network3 router is right on the other side of the wall and offers a much more stable, but slower connection. So we would like to upgrade the network to have a more reliable and faster network and add coverage of the garden area. - Others aren't so picky about performance, they would just like something reliable and good performing, but I am the one that wants to have the best performance I can afford (At least in apartment 2). - Others prefer things to be connected wirelessly, I want access to a fast wired connection on all things that might need it So this is what I've come up with, but I don't know exactly what to buy (and if this solution is even good): - Ap3: Gets one AP and maybe one of the older routers to take care of the wired connections that are available in the apartment (otherwise a new switch would be needed (about 8-ports)) - - Ap1: Gets 2 AP to take care of the wireless connection across the whole floor. (Maybe a switch for smart home things and connections - lights, shades, ... (idk what my brother's requirements will be) - Ap 3: Gets 2 APs, I also want a 10Gbs wired connection - because I can (I've seen some nice Mikrotik switches that cost around 500$ and connect just enough devices) mostly for local media streaming, I'm also a video editor and if I ever need to work from home a quick connection to centralized storage would be amazing. Also maybe a small gigabit switch for other wired connections and smart home things (I am planning on having a lot of small accent lights for different features of the apartment (maybe connected with Shelly wireless switches), some kind of a sound system, front door system with a camera and remote unlocking, automatic shades for the windows, I've seen some cool smart mirrors that I'd like to have, ... - Outside: I am not sure - either an outdoor type AP (on the balcony) or an indoor AP that would be mounted somewhere dry (under the outdoor kitchen counter or in the outside entrance to the basement - idk the wall is kinda thicc there ) - Building as a whole: Security system, gates idk... I haven't researched yet what things require a wired connection and what things work on wireless (although even if cameras have a wireless option I think I'd prefer a wired one). I don't even know all the smart home devices that exist to install... Thoughts: - it's better to go with more APs as they are less expensive than routers and a higher number of them will provide better coverage of 5GHz network across the house than just a few very fast routers - Each apartment having its own switch makes it easier to troubleshoot and there is no single point of failure, but it might be harder to set up ? Lately, I've been thinking of putting a server cabinet in the hallway of my apartment. With the server (running VMs and storage), UPSs, networking gear and I thought that's where the server for the cameras could be too. But today I got an even better and more crazy idea that would get rid of the annoying sound and heat of servers in my hallway... In the area that will become my living room there is already a hole that some water pipes go through and there is an unused chimney close-by - maybe I could route all the cables into the basement where the boiler and heater are - Maybe I could aggregate all the wired connections into the basement and only have one 48-port gigabit switch for the whole house (at least for apartment 1 and 2 - ap3 is already renovated and it would be hard to extend the runs to the server cabinet). This would also make the security system safer and not just right there in the hallway What do you think? Is it better to have one large switch for everything or should each apartment have its own stuff? NEW NETWORK: P.S. Hopefully, I haven't made too many grammar mistakes and the sentence structure is understandable
  21. I'm having trouble getting this to work. When I install Fah and reboot the fah client doesn't seem to be working At the start when I ssh into the vm i get 3 warnings, but the nvidia driver installs anyway. I've tried installing 7.4.4 and 7.5.1 but I'm getting the same result EDIT: I got it working somehow...
  22. Are you guys getting your full PPD? I've been getting about 1/2 of 700-800k since I've started...
  23. Looks like I've missed another folding event... Well this time I'm still running it even though I didn't enter.
  24. Thanks, some great new info that i missed somehow (that 90d and Rp don't have log). Thanks I know all that, I've got a fast enough 128GB SD card for most cameras, but the Z6 uses XQD and like CFast it's quite expensive. For the pocket I'd get a T5 ssd anyway since we would use it statically mostly. But Then I'd probably have to get the cage and that port protector... Also it has a mini XLR port so we'd have to change our microphone / or get an adapter of some kind. Did the pocket get any continuous AF firmware updates and is it any good? If I remember correctly it only had single AF. Do you have any tripod suggestions? I was looking at one that looked quite good and sturdy video tripod for around 180$, but the reviews are not great. And for that price I mostly found just light (travel) tripods like the manfrotto befree. I was thinking I could get the Manfrotto MVH500AH fluid head and some other legs, but I had trouble finding something a bit heavier.
