    Imo someone just mistyped 6C12T as 8C12T. Not that having HT on some cores is impossible, but for most tasks that's just asking for task scheduling trouble. Software engineers will turn into hardware engineer murderers for this crap

    Undervolting is safe just sometimes you hit instability but it's not a risk like if you overvolt and hit instability.

    Eh? That's like comparing the 2700 and 3600. Given both sit around $150-200 currently.
     
    If you're doing something more multithreaded the older chip might be a good idea for more threads to spread the work across the cores. If you're doing something more single threaded the newer chip is more up your alley especially when you consider power/heat.

    I think the R5 1600AF deserved a mention at 85$.
    2666 or maybe 2800 should be a reasonable memory speed. there is plenty of cheap 2666 sticks

    It's okay last I played CSgo I was Silver 2 or 1? I forget which... so yeah good on you.  I suck at fpses...
     
    It's okay in league I'm hardstuck Diamond(and have been for years) if you ever want help or to play just let me know.

    Unfortunately I got pretty unlucky with my 5820k, which doesn't like to do above 4.1 Ghz without more than 1.35v in recent years (when it was newer I could do 4.3 at 1.35 but eventually had instability) 
     
    Yeah I figure that Zen/Zen+ were about on par ipc wise with Haswell/Broadwell (E) like I mentioned part of the reason to upgrade would be for more 2 extra cores and upgradability to Zen 2/3 down the line (as I sometimes do virtualization stuff, as well as stream/record and render videos) I also do play at 144hz 1440p but esports titles primarily as I'm a pretty competitive person having been Diamond+ in League of Legends, Overwatch, and H1Z1 (back when that was a thing) 
     
    but I don't use many pcie lanes... just 16 for a gpu and 4 for an nvme drive should be all I need.

    Yeah; true. Was just stating what I'd suggest if he really wanted to make sure to get the most out of his budget. Because he mentions having several of those optiplexes just selling a couple of them could buy all the things I listed (newer optiplex+moreram+SSD)

    Uhm maybe I worded it wrong... It's definitely usable. I guess the better comparison is I don't find it to have any "value" as in it's price to performance ratio is beaten by things that match it in price making it essentially just a bad buy because you can buy better for the same price. Much like years back when Linus reviewed the like R5 240? Or whatever low end graphics card; and he gave it a piss poor review because it almost NEVER made sense to buy because there was readily available  things that beat it in it's own price category albeit from the used market... AND because higher end stuff beat it by wide margins even with the price discrepancy. 
     
    You know what I'm saying. It just doesn't make sense to purchase it given the market. At this point even at the very very very bottom end of budgets where you're forced in to "Scrapyarding" where you goto scrap yards and buy the PC parts based on their scrap weight... Nehalem, Westmere, Sandy, and Ivy bridge are all starting to appear at said scrapyards as well.

    OC the 9400; or just run the 8500 I think are your two best bets given these options...
     
    But I'd suggest getting something better... tbh LGA 775 stuff to be beyond it's point of usefulness even in low budget circumstances; LGA 1366/1155/1156 all have options that can rival it in price. There are plenty of first/second/third gen i3/5/7 dell optiplexes and such... you can slap in $5-25 xeons to achieve far better results.
     
    Another quick thing to note; Minecraft (especially server side) is far more DISK and RAM heavy than actually CPU heavy. 
     
    If I were to be doing a budget minecraft server. I'd probably try to get one of the above mentioned Sandy/Ivy Bridge setups; 8-16GB of RAM, and a cheap but decent 128GB SSD.

    Based on the fact you're trying to upgrade a bit and you sound budget conscious I'd be looking at a Ryzen 7 2700, in multicore its within error margin based on the fact it sounds like you're gonna be expanding to more multicore operations wouldn't be a bad option its cheaper than the 3600, and unlike the 2700 it'll just work without any fidgety beta bios'es on 400 series motherboards.

    They got in trouble a few times but it was usually just some small legal fees  and such or noise complaints and such TLDR they just had to pay a fee then got told to do it the right way... But also around that time when they were still in courts they watered down the content and found it was safer/easier to make, and if clickbaited it could make more money for less work. And Grant himself even said in a video he was struggling todo the old projects but the new "projects" were really easily done and could be mass produced easily essentially making them easy money. 
     
    They didn't have to water it down, they just had to be smarter about things; and so instead of being smarter about their good content they got smarter and just decided "Water it down, and click bait it harder"

    Nah, AMD cards historically almost always had better hashes per watt. GCN (their architecture) was just really really good at hashing. The 980 was fat more efficient at gaming, not at hashing.

    I feel like something like a Noctua NHD15 with it's fans removed would probably do you better. Or look at  say Paul Hardware's video on passively cooling a Ryzen 7, or google passive cpu coolers there's some out there... I remember seeing something like a Thermalright Macho Zero a while back?

    Honestly I gotta question if the coolers actually add that much to the cost for AMD... I mean their stock coolers are nice, but they still seem comparable to like $15 aftermarket coolers to me; and that's with those aftermarket coolers needing their own packaging, licencing, patents/copyrights, etc.  Plus AMD I'm sure gets some sort of bulk discounting due to their numbers. In the end I'd be surprised if it added more than like $10 to the cost. At which point I think it's worth it just as a back up or for trouble shooting purposes.

    I mean overall in most workloads they did infact perform very similarly or marginally better. 
     
    Clearly you've no idea the way businesses work. At the time I was contracted to a graphics design and video production company. All their designers were upgraded to new work stations with 1700's in them, and the more power users were given thread rippers... Why? Because they out performed their intel counterparts. 
     
    Of course crowns don't matter for the parts don't have them, in which case you do an apples to apples comparison. I don't even understand what you're arguing. In multithreaded work loads; AMD's processors beat their intel equivalents. The highest end x370 chip beat the highest end z270, x470 beat z370. x399 beat x299. In terms of multithreaded workloads. 
     
    Yeah come to think of it they probably struggled to make roadmaps given their multiple delays with 10nm and such. And how many times did intel even delay mainstream hexacore? I can't imagine they would've done it anysooner than on skylake, given until haswell-e even the ?820k part was quadcore.

    This guide is on how to play LoL on Linux. it is meant for the inexperienced Linux users but it is also relevant to LoL players who would like to switch to Linux but wonder if their favorite game will run. 
    Without further ado, let's begin. 
     
    Prerequisite 
    1) You need a decently modern machine. I know many people run Linux on aged hardware. Well, I am not confident if this will work on such machines due to driver support and such. However, I am quite confident any decently powerful hardware from the 2012 and onwards should handle it perfectly fine. 
     
    2) A current version of Ubuntu Linux which is 18.04 LTS installed on your machine. Any popular mainstream derivatives of it like Linux Mint and kubuntu should work too. You can do it on other distros but you will need to google yourself to figure out how to get proper graphics drivers installed.
     
    3) Patience, like a lot of patience. Depending on your internet connection, the LoL client can take a bloody long time to download and Installed its game files. 
     
    Step One: Install graphics driver
    If you are on AMD or have only Intel HD, just run this command in your terminal to get everything updated and you are already done. 
    If you are on Nvidia, you can use the graphics driver from the ubuntu repo but it is not the most up to date version. I suggest you use the most up to date version from a third-party PPA. 
    Run the command below
    Then run the one below and let it finish. It will ask you to disable secure boot if you are using EFI with secure boot on. Do that if that is the case.
    Afterward, reboot your computer and check the ubuntu software sources and the X server display setting to see if everything is installed properly. It should look like the image shown below. (Only relevent to users with Nvidia cards)

     
    Step Two: Install WINE
    We are just going to get the WINE from the Ubuntu repo. Wine development has been very rapid this past year mostly because of the huge influx of contributed code from Valve's Software engineers who worked on Proton. Wine versions have shot up from 2.xx to  3.xx and now a 4.xx compare to just a year ago. As usual, WINE on Ubuntu repo is outdated but that is OK. We are NOT going to install the latest wine. In fact, the wine we will be using may even be a different version because we will be using lutris. We still need it however because some lutris script uses the default system WINE so just go ahead and get it from the repo with this command
     
    Step Three: Install Lutris
    We are not going to use and configure WINE directly. It is too much a pain. Instead, we let lutris do it for us. Go on this website and register for a lutris account. It's free to register.
    Next, run these four lines of commands successively, one at a time, after the another. 
    Now you should have lutris installed and you can launch it using the launcher in the gnome application menu and then login with your lutris account. If lutris becomes none responsive, close it and then re-launch. You will be login when you do.
     
    Step four: Install League of Legends
    Now let's go to lutris LoL script page and run the LoL install script. Go to this website and then click on install. A browser pop up should appear asking you whether to run. I am using chromium web browser so I would hit run Open xdg-open in the pop up. Now the game should be added to your lutris client and work you through the install. It may ask you for installation folder, languages, region, install fonts and such. Hit yes to all. Regions and language depend on you. Sometimes the script may fail to grab the LoL installation .exe from the LoL website, if this happens, exit out of the installation and run the script again from the lutris website. 


     
    Finish!!!
    Now just wait for the LoL client to finish updating itself and download its game files. This took hours for me so I suggest doing this at night during sleep and it should be all set and ready to go in the morning. Enjoy!

     
    24 fps beacuse i had zoom out to to take a snapshot otherwise running at 60 fps, 1080p at max. Quite smooth
