The power efficiency of those Turing GPUs is really impressive indeed BUT every bit of power the projects get is important. Doesn't matter if you contribute 10 or 100 work units, every WU counts

Hussah! A friend let me borrow his old GPU so I just increased my productivity by about 50%
Ironically, the GTX 780 was able to get a WU, but the 980 was not 😂

No worries! Much like the epidemic the situation with the folding servers is ongoing and ever evolving but I will ensure one way or another that this will not cause anyone to miss out.

I am not sure about those old GPUs but everything above r9 380 and nvidia 1070 (that is lowest I have tested) did not even care about MC only thing that it would care is if your CC and MC clock are stable. Tho, higher CC does give some more PPD and going bellow certain MC does cause it to lower estimated PPD (tho, every WU is different so running factory MC or +100/+200 MC is what I recommend on newer cards). 
 
CC is whole different story, if you really want to push it, find the limit of your GPU by stress testing software and then lower your CC at least 2 steps lower than your highest CC (so you can avoid WU crashes but still have optimal performance).  For example, my 1080 Ti is cable of doing ~2080 CC but I lowered it to 2034 so it would always be stable
I am not sure about those older cards, 10th generations is the oldest one I used on Nvidia cards. You could try using compute option but personally, I do not think it is worth it meddling with that setting and I wouldn't touch it until end of event. But if you are up for experimenting, feel free to do it.

Got both an old dell box with a Xeon quad core and a Quadro 600 running 24/7 under my desk and my main gaming PC with it's I9 and RTX2070 working most of the time on this, heck yeah

I recently got into vintage hardware in the past year and I have collected a RIVA TNT2, RIVA TNT2 Ultra and a GeForce 3 ti 200. I've been lucky with the 20+ year old hardware not coming in DOA. *knocks on wood* But I have the means to refurb if need be.

If I had room in my rig, I'd throw in my old 9600 GT with the REVERSE blower cooler.
Nothing says high performance like recirculating your own hot air while the fan is screaming in desperation to cool things down... 🤷🏽‍♂️
