  1. I recommend separate devices. I am not a fan of modems with wifi built in. For the modem. ARRIS SURFboard SB6190. Or maybe the SB8200 if you think you will need the speed in the future. For the wifi. I am not sure. There are a lot of choices. I recommend something that works with pfsense. It is a very personal item. I just don't know your situation and what is available. I have not shopped in a while. ASUS makes some nice stuff with good firmware out of the box. I use a Netgear Nighthawk with DD-WRT. But that might not work for you. I have used ARRIS SURFboard modems for a long time. Never had a problem.
  2. That is interesting. It looks like BIONIC uses your computer in different ways. Sometimes it needs large amounts of storage space. It depends what projects are added. Rosetta@Home compliments Folding@Home very well!! But this thread is about FAH for the LTT team. And COVID-19 Folding@home is easier to use and it does not consume storage space. I don't want to take anything from the LTT Folding@Home team. If you want to contribute to COVID-19 research and your machine can not keep up with Folding at Home. Maybe try Rosetta@Home. Thanks for informing me about alternatives.
  3. Don't stress. That is normal. Sometimes it takes hours and hours. Your computer is just being used as needed. Maybe your machine is not needed right now. Don't worry about it. Just let it run at its own pace. Actually it is a good thing. It means that WU are being completed as fast as the scientists come up with stuff to do. There is no backlog. It is a good thing in a way.
  4. I have been experimenting and I want to share what I found. I have installed Folding@Home on several different computers. Did you install Folding@Home on older hardware? Is your computer effective? There is a simple way to figure this out. Look at two numbers. In the Folding@Home Advanced Control. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to get a reasonable number calculated. Let it run to at least 5% before you make a comparison. Look at "Base Credit" and "Estimated Credit". If they are the same number. That machine can not keep up. It is not worth it in my opinion. Ideally you want the "Estimated Credit" to be a higher number then the "Base Credit". These two numbers are the same when the folding will not be completed before the Timeout. Once the timeout is reached the WU will be assigned to another machine. Then even when your machine finishes the WU. It is too late and a different machine in the world has already started working on the exact same WU. You can find more information at this link. https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/running-foldinghome/
  5. That is normal. It will have some down time. Don't worry about it. It is probably waiting for a WU.

  7. I used to have a FX 8350. I remember this design. I have decided that the A10-7850K is not good for Folding and I will uninstall it on that machine. I forgot that it was the same design as the old FX chips. I think the best approach is to make this machine sleep or shutdown more often. It boots to SSD quickly enough. It looks like it can not complete WU before timeout.
  8. The answer is -- It's NOT worth it. In my opinion. I found this. https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/running-foldinghome/ "You will still receive credit for all WUs completed and uploaded prior to the Timeout (formerly preferred deadline). However, after the Timeout, your contribution is not as useful scientifically because another copy of that work unit had to be sent out to another contributor. Even if you eventually complete the work unit, that other contributor still had to process duplicate work to assure the science moves forward. And it would be unfair not to also credit that second contributor." The A10-7850K sucks for folding. It can not complete WU before the Timeout. It may be best to keep this computer off not consume the energy unless the machine is needed by a user.
  9. I am setting up a few different clients. I have been experimenting. How does Folding at home work on a APU. I have set it up on a A10-7850K. But it does not produce much. If Folding@Home compatible with a APU? When I set it up it got a WU for the CPU. The Folding@Home client only uses 2 cores. But the A10-7850K has 4 cores. I'm not sure why this is. I got a WU on the GPU. But it is very slow. The contribution is very low. Maybe the A10-7850K just sucks. Or maybe there are compatibility issues with Folding. It works fine as an office PC at my parents house. They think it is great for what they need. I will let it run for a while and decide if it is worth it.
  10. Folding@Home has been around for a long time. This setting protects the servers. Too many requests coming in too fast can create a DDOS type attack. Kinda. The timer is a way to help reduce requests to a manageable level.
  11. I just got two a few minutes ago. It is all about the timing. Lets say Stanford sends out 5,000 WU. They might disappear in seconds. There are lots of people doing this. Maybe your client did not make a request during the 2 seconds that they were available. Don't stress about it too much. Pause it and restart it will reset the timer. A pause-restart will make it send a few more requests.
  12. Be patient. F@H is kinda overloaded. Ask for it once. Do not use a Google or yahoo email. These services are blocking it as spam. Maybe you will get one tomorrow. It took over 24 hours for me to get one. I never got a response on my gmail account.
  13. Long time lurker of LTT. I just signed up. For this forum and for Folding @ Home. I have a home server with VMware. I am going to get Folding @ Home set up inside its own VM to contribute to this goal 24/7. I will have it all set up Monday or Tuesday next week. The server does not have a GPU. I am not sure how effective it will be. It is an experiment. I have not decided yet how many CPU cores I will let it use. Thanks for the motivation LTT.
  14. It seems to me that the public reaction is much worse then the human malware. Everyone needs to remain calm and practice good hygiene. Maybe take some vitamins and stay away from crowds. No need for anything drastic.
