But it works with free accounts too. Only the host needs premium for an ad-free jam.

I haven't set this decision in stone yet, but the abovely reocmmended Spotify Jam features makes me think maybe I'll fully convert to Spotify

Niber got a reaction from PDifolco in I'm beginning to think all desktops are useless compared to laptops because of this...
When I'm using a laptop, my fingers are constantly adjusting the brightness of the screen by pressing the brightness up and down button. For example if there's a white window (like this forum) I turn down the brightness, if I'm watching some (SDR) movie I'll crank the brightness back up. I probably do this more than I even adjusting the sound volume, it's great, i love this level of fast control.

But then when I'm forced to use desktop I'm just baffled by the lack of this super basic functionality. if I want to change the brightness on a desktop I have to reach over to the monitor, click like 6 buttons to find the right menu then hold a button to slowly adjust the brightness, it's ridicolus.

Back in 2010 I used to have a monitor that came with a software so that you could adjust the brightness with a key. This software ACTUALLY sent this signal through USB to the external monitor to change the brightness there, so it wasn't some kind of software dimming. but nowadays I never see this functionality in monitors any more

Am I missing something obvious here? I know about F.lux and stuff like that, but I don't want to software dim, I want the actual monitor/TV settings to adjust its brightness output, just like how they do on laptops

Yeah that's frustrating, as like you said its a good way to tell if its a bandwidth issue with the cable which can happen on one device and not another due to different power levels.  I get the feeling the problem with the M1 was possibly not putting out enough voltage or current so a marginal cable loses the signal, which also depends on how sensitive the display is at picking up that signal too.

I've been through so many HDMI cables over the years due to signal problems.

Niber got a reaction from Dedayog in Why is my 3k$ laptop faster than my 10k$ desktop?
Hi, I just bought a gaming laptop (Asus Rog Strix 16) thinking that even though it will be slower than my desktop I might be able to use it for some less demanding work on it, compared to the much more expensive desktop computer my employer bought for me last year.
However to my surprise I feel like the laptop is actually performing faster, so I downloaded 3dmark and was again surprised that the laptop received a much higher score (at 1080p)

*The laptop is brand new, the desktop is 1 year old.
*The laptop is RTX4000 series whereas the desktop is 3000-series. But still a desktop 3090 should be way faster than a mobile 4080.

I tried upgrading my desktop OS to a fresh Win11, but I received the same score. Does this make any sense to anyone?

Both were running in Performance power plan with newest drivers. I don't think the desktop is throttling because it's an enormous case with really strong cooling.

Thanks, I'll definitely try to get it sent back under warranty. Waiting for them to get back to me.
I made a video recording showing the problem too:

That was a great answer. Thanks.

Like you're saying, I don't want to scale SDR content up into HDR. The plan is to sit in such a dark room that the full monitor brightness is WAY too bright for regular use, but ok for that occasional sun or flashlight effect in HDR movies.

That's an interesting theory regarding monitor. With my problematic SDR movies, it could indeed be the tone-mapping of my Samsung G9 Neo that does weird things to the darker spectrum, which is causing MS's attempt to send an SDR inside of a HDR look slightly off.

it takes some tinkering but it works situationally, i keep my hdr on and use it full screen windowed. netflix took some delicate steps to get working (or just use a ps5), i havent had problems with sdr content aside from some screenshots.

Niber got a reaction from vikber02 in i posted a comment on a ltt video and got a reply from a account called telegram me-linustechtips saying i won a prize is this real or scam?
That's 99.999999% likely a scam, but imagine WHAT IF!! Perhaps Linus is standing outside of your house right now with a lambo packed full of computer parts, about to hand you the key, but now his heart is broken crying as he was trying to do something nice to you but you decided to just ignore (and report) him.
