  1. I've never really posted here before but I felt it was probably the best place to just get the stupidity of it all off my chest. This morning I was in a situation in which my girlfriend wanted to play some Minecraft (And no, she's not a child) and discovered that she needed to upgrade to the new launcher (I'm aware this isn't necessary but I recommended she do it for compatibility reasons). The installation was fine however when she wanted to make a shortcut to it on her desktop, we discovered that Microsoft seemed to have decided that doing so was not going to happen. Her PC runs Windows 11, and in Windows 10, I knew that you could simply drag the icon from the start menu (provided it's pinned to start) onto the desktop to create a shortcut and so logically this is the first method I tried, only to find out that there is no such functionality in Windows 11. This was okay though, because I could simply right-click and... nope. Right-clicking doesn't work either. At this point I decided to resort to opening the run dialog, opening shell:startup and then backtracking to the start menu folder, where I thought surely I would find the shortcut to the Minecraft Launcher but there was nothing, even with hidden items turned on. At this point we both decided that it was more hassle than it was worth although I kept looking around and was unsuccessful in finding any reasonable solutions (other than using batch files). I am pretty sure this problem is due to the Minecraft Launcher being an "Xbox game" and not a normal application, however I would still expect the basic functionality of creating a desktop shortcut. This thread is going to make me look incredibly stupid if there is a simple solution that I'm not seeing - please let me know if there is - but as far as I can tell there is nothing and in my opinion the lack of such a basic feature is just inadequate TL;DR Windows 11 doesn't appear to have an obvious way of creating desktop shortcuts for "Xbox" games such as the new Minecraft Launcher
  2. I wanted the title to be changed, this was the only way i could think of
  3. I am reposting this since my requirements have now changed. I am looking to create a system similar to the one in the video "NO, this is the cleanest setup." I do not have a laptop with a thunderbolt 3 port so i am in the middle of finding so work-arounds using USB 3.1, I have got my eyes on a PCIe Riser which plugs in via USB (designed for GPU mining but it should work just as well for this purpose): https://www.amazon.co.uk/VILICONTY-Express-Riser-Adapter-Powered-6Pin-1x-16x/dp/B07657M9WQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=usb%203%20pci%20riser&qid=1582821795&sr=8-3&tag=linustechtips-21 I also have a USB 3.1 dock with space for hard drives, etc. along with a 1050ti GPU but I am looking for a solution to the fact that this GPU will require a power supply so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for this. Also, could anyone recommend a 1080p 60Hz Monitor for me to use (i plan to use my laptop screen as a second monitor). Please feel free to correct any of my interpretations or suggest considering a different part to the ones I already found. Thank you.
  4. this method should work for the monitors and peripherals but i am now looking for a usb external PCIe riser, for the graphics card. I have one in mind: https://www.amazon.co.uk/VILICONTY-Express-Riser-Adapter-Powered-6Pin-1x-16x/dp/B07657M9WQ/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=usb+3+pci+riser&qid=1582821795&sr=8-3 but could anyone possibly give me advice on whether that one will work or if not then any others i can try
  5. i'd say thats a pretty decent list. You've got the basics, for a PC that is possibly going to be rendering video at the same time as gaming, you require a good graphics card, the 2070 should be perfectly good but if your budget allows, possibly upgrade to a 2080???
  6. I'd say the graphics card will definitely need some upgrading, maybe a 1050ti or a 1060 (with at least 2GB of VRAM, I recommend 4). Also the power supply. It should be good but if you want more performance, then you will want at least a 400W one. This will then come very close to my own personal gaming PC, which is now broken but i wont go into that, which used an AMD ryzen 5 CPU, a 1050ti and a 400W power supply. That system used to run most major games at 60 fps or higher. Also consider adding more fans as both the graphics card and psu upgrades will increase heat by a reasonable amount. Replacing one of the HDDs with a small (maybe a 64 or 128GB) SSD to run the operating system on (i recommend using windows 10, if it is not already installed, to get maximum compatibility) and keep the other HDD for general storage. Since the PC is from 2013, you may also need to upgrade your RAM to DDR4 RAM for compatibility with other components, look into this and if you need to do it you will also need to replace the motherboard as DDR4 RAM will only fit in a DDR4 slot. Summary: Upgrades: Definitely a better GPU, most likely a 1050ti (with at least 2GB of VRAM, I recommend 4) Higher wattage PSU, not required but probably a good idea for better performance of your GPU and CPU Possibly a small (64 or 128 GB) SSD to install your operating system on, keeping the HDDs for general storage Possible Issues: Some of these upgrades may require DDR4 RAM (I am assuming that since the PC is from 2013 it is using DDR3, or even DDR2, depending on the budget it was originally built on, look into this and if a RAM change is required, you will also need a new motherboard as DDR4 RAM will only fit in a DDR4 slot. The upgraded power supply and GPU may also create an increased amount of heat which means you will need more fans I also recommend using windows 10, if it is not already installed, for maximum game compatibility.
  7. i am looking more into getting an external graphics card, but this should work for the rest. Thanks
  8. I'm wondering if its possible for such a thing as a usb 3.1 to thunderbolt 3 adaptor to exist. I'm trying to recreate a similar system to the one in your video "No, this is the cleanest setup": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2VxwFEA8xM, but i don't have a thunderbolt 3 port on my laptop and don't want to buy a new one just for this purpose
