I chose xubuntu. It's open source right? Are there good video guides somewhere?

How would I go about finding how to change the startup behavior from automatically connecting to the network, to not connecting, and how to find safe, community reviewed apps for monitoring hardware, and for controlling fan speeds?

Goal: security and privacy for browsing the web Criteria: Debian Based. Can reliably from startup, restrict all de-anonymizing network connections, until I tell it otherwise or it connects with openvpn. Can easily control fan speeds. Is easy enough to learn for a windows user. Preferred web browser: firefox. Can install next to a windows install on the same drive. (I am able to partition if needed) Dump all remaining upgrade points to: Is light and good for browsing and running web code.
