As far is i am aware Zen 2 is backwards compatible. Though i remember MSI stating they would not recommend it. that had to do with higher end chips tho like Ryzen 9 and not the lower end chips. Asus on the otherhand were like: Sure, it will work. But i still recommend asking the manufacturer just to be sure if i were you.

Your Z97 motherboard only offers a PCI-e 2.0 2x M.2 slot. The maximum throughput of that is around 1000MB/s.
There's your issue.

I am probably going to wait for the 800 series. my card still runs every game at high/ very high settings @ 1080p and im not planning on gaming at something like 4K or something like that any time in the near future.
