Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Driving Exam
Hm. I passed my first try for both written and driving exam. IIRC, I missed two marks on the written, one mark for the driving course?
I studied the crap out of the written exam. In California, we have online resources (DMV practice tests) available, and they are incredibly similar to the actual written test. For the driving exam, familiarity with the driving course helped with my self-doubt. Thankfully, the driving school I went to walked me through the driving routes I'd be tested on, multiple times. -
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Just an odd question for you guys xD
Only built the one PC, but I felt exhilarated when I assembled it for the first time and it powered on without a hitch. Couldn't wait to get everything set up and running! Also, I was mumbling what-the-heck-am-I-doing and snickering the entire time:
For my first "legit" build inside a case, I woke up the next day with awfully sore muscles (built my PC on the floor). I'm one of those weirdos that likes the feeling of sore muscles? Also, felt a surge of adrenaline when I pushed the power button and everything jumped to life. 😁

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in What is the most fans a case can hold?
Hey there. If all you want is a case with a bunch of fan options, consider the Phanteks Enthoo 719? Decent full tower case.
4 x 120mm front fans. 3 x 120mm top fans. 1 x 120mm rear fan. 3 x 120mm bottom fans. 4 x 120mm side fans. -
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Windows AntiVirus No Where To Be Found
Attempt #3: "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Components" > "Windows Security" > "Virus and Threat Protection"?
I've no more ideas, I'm afraid. 😅

Odd... How about "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Defender Security Center" > "Virus and Threat Protection"?
Screenshot of my gpedit.msc screen:

Hm. I haven't played around with PolicyPlus. Try this?
Search for "gpedit.msc" in the Windows search bar. From the left panel, navigate through "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "All Settings". Scroll down until you find "Hide the Virus and Threat Protection Area". If the state is Enabled, set it to Not Configured or Disabled. If the state is Not Configured, set it to Disabled. If that doesn't work, I've no idea. 🤷♂️

Hey there. Are you logged in with a school or company's Microsoft account? If so, your organization might have disabled access to that feature.
Try searching for "Virus & Threat Protection" in the Windows search bar. Are you able to access it from there, or do you get a "Page not available" message?

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Not present on the BOINC team list?
I tried looking up Dizmos in the BOINCstats search and in the LinusTechTips_Team member list on BOINCstats, neither turned up any results that pointed to a User ID #1027011 on Einstein@home. I'm guessing you'll only appear on BOINCstats's LinusTechTips_Team member list if you have an account for the site and/or have added the team to the project through BAM!...?

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Not present on the BOINC team list?
Link to LinusTechTips_Team's Members List. To find it from your Einstein@home account dashboard:
Huh. Odd. I assume you've checked your junk/spam folders? Not quite sure what's up with that. 🤔
-
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Not present on the BOINC team list?
Thanks for the screenies. 😁 You're on the team, no worries:
Are you registering for a new BOINCstats account or did you click on account recovery? I doubt requesting a password reset would work if you don't already have a BOINCstats account (BOINCstats accounts are independent of BOINC Manager and Einstein@home, although you can link them up via BAM!).

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Not present on the BOINC team list?
Hey there. I'm assuming this is your profile (User ID: 40598531, from UK) and you've signed up for SETI@home (User ID: 9143825, from UK)? If I'm mistaken, it would really help if you had a link to your profile on BOINCstats or on the project's site. 😉
Does LinusTechTips_Team show up on BOINC Manager, like in the screenshot below? Have you tried adding the LinusTechTips_Team to the project through BAM! on BOINCstats? -
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in What was your first Linus video?
Oof... I have YouTube history and searches turned off, so...
Hm... 🤔
Ah. Do commercials count? The one they showed at The Game Awards 2019.
Definitely the first "video" from Linus for me, I saw it before I got into LTT.

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in cheap mech keyboard
Hey there. Consider checking out the Logitech K840?
Full-sized keyboard. Romer-G Tactile switches. Quieter than most Cherry MX switches, I'd say? Currently $59.99 on Amazon, Best Buy, and Newegg. Logitech K840 Sound Test:

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in Windows 10 Home to Pro
Hey there. If all you want to do is add the Windows 10 Pro license to your system:
Note that Windows 10 licenses pre-installed on a laptop or pre-built computer are usually non-transferable -- I say usually, because I've heard of some outlier cases in which OEM licenses were transferred when the person got in touch with Microsoft support (I don't know the details or if there were any qualifying criteria for these cases). If, however, you own a retail copy of Windows 10, you should be able to transfer the license to your new system without any hitches.
If you have a retail license linked to your Microsoft account, I think you should be able to find your product key from Microsoft's site?
Sign in to Microsoft's site. Navigate to "My Microsoft Account". If the link above doesn't work, you can find "My Microsoft Account" by clicking on your profile picture in the upper-right corner of the site. Select "Services & Subscriptions" from the top panel. Under the Windows 10 Pro product, select "View product key". -
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in How does someone get banned on this site?
Ah, I think there might be a slight misunderstanding?
Seems to be worded so that if X accuses Y of being a fanboy, troll, or a shill, X receives the ban, not Y. Basically, try to keep disagreements cordial instead of disrespecting or attaching labels to the opposing party. (I mean, it is a forum, not an elementary school's playground.)

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in How does someone get banned on this site?
Hm... I'd define it as a very annoying, very insistent apologist/promoter for something or someone.
-
Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in How does someone get banned on this site?
Repeated violations of the Community Standards.
The big no-no's that will maybe perhaps most likely get you banned:
Other ones will likely get you friendly warnings, unless you keep up the violations (IIRC it was 10 warnings? Gonna go digging around to see if I can find that post).
Edit: Found the post.

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in New switches and why not to use cooking oil to lubricate your keyboard
Hey there. Wanted to vote, then got hung up on the details. 😅
Clicky, Tactile, or Linear? Are you looking at any switches in particular? Like the Kailh BOXs, or the Gateron Inks? Or just the standard fare? Gaterons are better known for the smoothness of their switches. Although, I've heard rumors that they get tend to scratchy over time? 🤷♂️ If you'd like a good stock, non-lubed switch, Kailh BOXs and the Gateron Inks are decent options. Check out sowon's reviews of the Kailh BOX Jades (Clicky), Gateron Ink Blacks (Linear), Gateron Reds (Linear), and Gateron Yellows (Linear). And then drop them a like because deliciously good content like that deserves all the likes. 😁👍 -

Been using this wallpaper for years, now. 🤔

Eschew got a reaction from Red :) in What is this part of my case used for?
Hey there. The bottom railing(?) should fit a 3.5" drive cage. (Edit: I think I figured the vertical spaces out. Might be space to route the cables coming from the HDD cages?)
MSI MPG Sekira 500X (3.5" Drive Cage Visible)
Vertical Spaces
The case is mentioned in the thread's tags. MSI MPG Sekira 500X. 😉

Eschew reacted to GOTSpectrum in BOINC Pentathlon 2021
Usually runs at 4.5, 4.6 was stable for the last couple days, now testing 4.7. It used to do 4.9 at a hot push but running it hard has degraded the chip by a fair margin over the years. Think if I had better cooling for it it maybe could do 4.8, possibly 4.9 again. If this is stable going to try having 50% of the cores at 4.8. Every clock cycle counts for the pent!

Right now I'm using some kind AIO with the same fans on full blast.
It used to be on a custom look with two thicc rads
4.7 failed unfortunately, testing 4.7 on cores 0-3 now

Eschew reacted to SkyHound0202 in Seagate Exos vs Barracuda
While the degradation of a hard drive is a gradual process, the chance of a sudden failure in a drive is still random. That's why the MTBF (mean time before failure) value in hours is only a theoretical indicator for the lifespan of a drive.
Indeed, Exos drives has a higher MTBF rating and carries a longer warranty, it doesn't mean it would be more reliable than any other drives. It's just it's "less likely" to fail under normal workload.
Running two 4TB Barracuda drives in RAID only gives you 4TB of actual storage capacity, which is smaller than the single 8TB drive can offer. But it does provide better redundency in case of a single drive failure. However, it will not protect you against theft, accidental deletion, ransomware, etc. You still need regular backup and good practices.
Ideally you should get two enterprise drive running RAID 1, but since that's expensive as hell, you can run two Barracuda in RAID. If you want extra "peace of mind", you can get those Barracuda/Ironwolf Pro drives with recovery plan.

Eschew reacted to Lurick in Face it, Apple. You lost. - Sensel Trackpad
So you're saying a significant chunk of the apple ecosystem people will forego their entire ecosystem purchases for a trackpad?
