They haven't blocked MSCONFIG, regedit, and dxdiag... Fail. Now I know they're running crappy Athlon x2 B22's with integrated Radeon HD 4200 series GPUs... They say the computers are top of the line with their coil wine fans, 10-20 minute boot times, and lag 24/7.. That is what you get for running old hardware on a pirated Windows 7 Professional 64bit with 2-4GB of RAM.

I think it's worse is watching the first Borderlands boot for the first time in 640x480 on a 1920x1080 monitor with it at the lowest quality possible. :9

A person who'd buy the computer would have the most demanding program being Solitaire or IE/Chrome/Firefox FB games.

And then you have the couple geek squads you hear of that actually help fix something while the rest do this.. Also sometimes RC trucks relate to computers, well not ones for little children though except for the battery situation. Speaking of that, I need to get mine racing again. Sorry for getting a little offtopic.

So this happened a couple days ago in school. Don't worry I have another story too.
The "modern" HP computers rocking pentiums and athlon x2's have this huge issue of getting all of the programs running to stop responding except for task manager.
He said his computer was frozen and needed help. My plan was to open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end explorer.exe and restart it since I had to do that ALL THE TIME last year.
Guess what the school did? They finally disabled Task Manager through that shortcut, disabled everything in the Ctrl+Alt+Delete, removed Alt+F4, and even got rid of right click for no reason as my computer teacher is accustomed to right click over shortcuts...

Now for this one. My grandma who is 73 has a dell AIO computer since she doesn't really need much of a computer for Facebook games.
Her: My computer started acting up recently and I have no idea why.
    Me: What's it doing?
Her: Well your uncle told me to download java from here.
Me: What is here? Where did he want you to download it from?
    Her: Facebook.
Me:Well I'll start trying to remove everything that was added to your computer.. *Opens Explorer as a virus killed Chrome. About five tool bars, virus filled search engine that puts the unknown websites up first*
*I continue to search for MalwareBytes. It let me install it, and went to install AVG. Gave me an error saying WerFault: Cannot allow memory (Insert numbers and letters)*
Then I went and ran a scan with MalwareBytes... Holy shit were there viruses EVERYWHERE in System32 and Windows files just fucking around.
Once that half hour scan finished, it removed 1000+ viruses, malware, .PUPs, etc. and then went on Explorer to see if I could install AVG. It finally let me. I then ran a hour scan since I wanted to make sure that all the hidden things were removed.
Thank god it only detected three things. I went on Explorer, installed Firefox to replace her Internet Explorer and after it was installed, move everything from her Chrome to it, uninstalled Chrome, and then re-installed it. While I was doing that, I disabled Internet Explorer so she couldn't use it as I know it'd be filled with all the adware possible again. Once Chrome was finished, I reset it as the default browser and then went home. Thank god she only lives right across the street. It even happened to be the day I was given a lot of homework as it was the last night before the marking period... It took me two hours and it was completely black outside... I was up till 12 since I was two hours behind. At least she let me do everything and I told her that if my uncle (her son) says to download something, don't do it.

My school locks them, my friend who used to mess with their computers when they were running XP and had CRTs two years ago figured that out... Yes CRT monitors in 2012...

Since my school does a bad job at hiding things, you try to change the background, it defaults back to black and pops up, "This Copy of Windows is Not Genuine. Please activate it." They also forgot to hide the software used to prevent it from popping up.. Schools really need to actually get an IT guy who knows something about computers to make good decisions about what they should buy.. I mean seriously, my school is using two laptops on wheels (they call them COWs...). They did have four with two of the cheap $150 Samsung chromebooks, and two of the HP Minis with Atom N270s... Well they managed to kill thirty HP Minis, yes thirty. How, I don't know.. I'm assuming they overcharged and the batteries died, but they thought they died and threw them out...

Today while I was in a class room to retake a test, this happened.
Person who began working at the school: Do you guys like magnets? *Pulls out some old magnets ripped out of an old HDD*
*He asks everyone and I chose to say I don't know to see what he'd call them*
Person who's now working at my school: This came out of a computer, all computers have these.
Me: Was it a HDD it came out of?
    Him: No an Optical Drive.
Me: Not all computers have Optical Drives or HDDs. Some have none of those and a SSD. Also that magnet did come out of a HDD.
Him: No it is from a Optical Drive.
*This happened while the new tech guy was replacing cables for the projector
New IT guy: That kid is right, not all computers have HDDs and Optical Drives nowadays. He is also correct that it came from a HDD.
    Him: Oh.
I think I'm going to enjoy this new IT guy. Hopefully he will be the one who will actually figure out I know about tech and not just think I know nothing.

When you have already told a teacher why her speakers are buzzing.. Again, it's a bad ground or interference. Why can't any of the "tech workers" at my school figure that out? Seriously...
Also I decided to see how much dust is in my school computers by sticking a cord into the front grill and rubbing it against the side. I still wonder how they do not overheat with almost 24/7 use..

Has an old Dell Dimension 4600 that hasn't been attempted to be turned on since 2009. Still boots like it's never been sitting around. That thing even has a P4 as well, except the computer I think is from 2003.

Don't worry it happens here, "Android is the worst thing!" They call my HTC One (M7) a tablet just because the iPhone 4 is the size of the screen. Then they complain about how bad it takes drops as they THROW THEM IN THE AIR AND LET THEM SMASH INTO PAVEMENT WITHOUT CASES. Richie Rich parents much? Good grief you know how hard it was for me to even get this phone? I've had to pay for every upgrade in my computer..
Also someone in my class was complaining about how bad the school computers were. I tell him, "We realize they're slow, they weren't built to run fast. Besides that smashed phone in your pocket probably won't outperform it." He said, "Yes it will!" Gets mad at computer and starts smashing computer just because some go into boot options for Windows 7. How many rants to I have to stop myself from..?

Our computers do the same (Pirated Windows 7 on Vista drivers) with a chromebook that looks like someone hit it with a bat. I've seen every about 20/30 Mini HP's there with a missing key or looking like someone whipped it across the room. Almost everyone at that school has an iPhone with a smashed screen and don't even care since they get them for free without paying every month. Even with my motherboard getting ready to go, I'm not going to treat it like a paperweight. Just going to baby it the best I can until I get money.
Think I'll stop now before I go on ranting.

People at my school do that with the laptops. It ticks me off to watch people not listen to one of the simplest directions to follow. They're so poor. Some of the laptops have cracked screens with dented backs. Shows how much people at my school care.

How I feel when someone thinks his IBM laptop running XP is a high quality laptop that is "running Windows 7." Also thinks building a computer is impossible, and Alienware has the best computers available in the world.. Would continue but I think it might become a rant..

Someone comes over and sees my computer, "Oh, how do you have two monitors running i-it isn't possible!" .... Later on goes to put drink on top of computer case.. I don't want liquid near my phone, computer, or keyboard.. (Of course phone is right in front of the computer) That would be like having your most important item damaged, no one wants that..

I remember this challenge or whatever they called it at the school where students from multiple grade levels would answer these questions. Random Question : "What is used to browse the internet?" Kids response : "Hard drive disk motorizing."
Another someone told me the Chromebooks the school uses just because it has HD screens means it can run any game. *Cough*Cannot open .exe's*Cough*

@Darkman I did toy with the idea, briefly looking at parts from Lenovo prebuilts, but I couldn't find much about them, and was worried about their cooling potential.  You can see @ccRicers has linked one a few posts further up, which does look good admittedly.

I eventually concluded that a normal low profile solution would be best. The cooler isn't a limiting factor as all my options are lower than the ram sticks. The cooler will get direct air from outside the case, and in the final build the cpu and gpu will be in seperate compartments both running positive pressure. A heavily vented case back, and small exhaust fan in the front corner should help. Honestly cooling has always been a concern, so we may need to add more fans. But not much can be changed layout wise.

Have you considered looking on ebay for a cpu cooler from an all in one prebuilt computer? Majority are pretty compact and blower style so that would be nice for just getting the heat from the cpu directly out of the dreamcast shell.
