  1. Ok! I'm talking about used Mac's by the way. Just to be clear. Is it stupid to buy used NAS'es? Is it best to buy two identical ones? Or can I mix and match brands / models? Another concern is, how do I make it future proof? Right now I have 4 to 5 Tb. I don't know how fast it will grow. It can grow pretty fast, depends on the amount of projects, jobs, etc.
  2. If you mean as my main system. Then yes, I need a Mac. (main reason is the way of navigating folders) My laptop is a Mac and if I buy a desktop in the future, it will probably be a Mac. If you meant for the NAS itself, than no. I just saw some people doing it and it seemed a simple method. It might be limiting, that's why I'm asking here on the forum since my knowledge is very very basic. I looked at Synology, and the cheapest that offers RAID 5 is the DS420J. (I'm saying RAID 5, as it seems the best option?) Is it any good? I was under the impression that a Mac or DIY option gave more bang for the buck? I want to keep costs low. Is a RAID 5 for both NAS'es recommended? And if I'm not mistaken, SMR HDD Drives is the better choice here? Also a concern of mine is, what if there's an electrical blackout? How do you protect your NAS, Drives from that? I mean this could damage the data on the drives if they are busy with a task, right?
  3. I've been reading bits and pieces. But my knowledge level is very basic. I want two NAS'es. One at home. This will function as a manual back-up (film footage (ProRes, RAW, H264, H265 & photo's in RAW, TIFF, Jpeg). Maybe a partition for automatic back-up (with exception of certain folders) of laptop (& future desktop). Time Machine? Need to be able to look into the backed-up files, and copy certain folders/files back to laptop (to work on specific file/project). One off site NAS. This will function purely as a back-up. A mirror of the NAS at home. My operating system is Mac OSx. So I was thinking if it's better to just buy two older Mac's? Than or build a NAS from scratch, or buy a Synology/Qnap/Asustor. As I saw you can just setup a Mac to share it's storage? • Two Mac mini's, downside only external storage through usb cable usb cable connection probably also need external power?, good = power consumption • Laptop, downside only external storage through usb cable connection probably also need external power?, good = power consumption, good (if HDD no need external power) = can keep running in case of electricity blackout. • Mac Pro 2010 / 2012, downside = power consumption, good = several internal HDD mounts Current need around 4 to 5 Tb. But growing of course (audiovisual creative job/independent). Asking for help, thoughts, recommendations. Thanks!
  4. Thank you! I didn’t know about SMR vs CMR. I just googled it. If I understand correctly. The SMR type would lose performance if I would delete files. For example, shoot for client -> backup original files-> final files delivered -> delete original files
  5. Hi, since this forum is really helpful, I thought I quickly ask what you would recommend. for backing up (archive) photo’s (RAW) and film footage which of these drives would you recommend? Toshiba P300 3TB 7200RPM (0,22€/GB) Toshiba P300 4TB 5400RPM (0,20€/GB) There’s a lot of mixed info on 7200 vs 5400. I always thought 7200 is better/faster/etc. My type of use for these HDD’s would be to only back-up. I’ll use an SSD for active use (grading photo’s etc.) Is a 7200 drive a lot faster in this case? Backing up large files or lots moderate size files (RAW photos). Thanks!
  6. Thank you all for the quick replies! Really helpful. HDD & SSD for me than.
  7. Hi all, I posted a thread here a few months ago about HDD's. But yesterday suddenly I thought about cloud storage. There are cloud storage offerings with unlimited storage space. I haven't looked into the different offerings much yet. I first wanted to ask if there is still a reason to backup to external HDD if going for Cloud storage? What are the downsides of cloud storage? Would HDD be better for my use? Going with 2 cloud storage services to be extra secure? What I'll be backing up is photo's (RAW) and film footage (Large files). (Photographer/filmaker, so professional use.) I see this as a solution to archive things. Not as an 'active' backup, for that I use SSD's. What are your thoughts? Thanks ahead
  8. Thanks for the quick reply!! As for running it inside the pc, I want it to use externally going from laptop to desktop etc. Well I thought so too that SSD would be better bang for buck. But that Intel P665 is cheaper than the Crucial MX500 here in Europe. Unless of course the Intel P665 isn't adviseable. Great on the HDD. I'd only be turning it on when transferring or backing up.
  9. Hi, a while back I posted on an older thread but it didn't seem to get picked up. I've been looking at 2 solutions I need. 1 A work drive to be used for photo (offload SD Card, Edit images from the drive, occasional offload video footage) 2 A backup drive / archive drive (storing all unused files and ideally having a backup or two of everything) I have a phew older hdd drives laying around from different brands, mostly seagate. But I started thinking, I would prefer a more effeciënt approach. 1 For the Work drive I was thinking of using a SSD OR SSD NVME M.2 enclosure. Ideally the enclosure is easy to open. That way I can just buy a few SSD's or NVME M.2's. A few questions here. Is the speed for these external needs a dramatic improvement going from SSD to NVME M.2? Is passive cooling of the enclosure as important with SSD's as it is with NVME M.2's? Any enclosure you would recommend? Any brand or product you would recommend for SSD OR NVME M.2? At the moment the INTEL P665 NVME has an interesting price tag in Europe. Any experience with these enclosures? https://www.amazon.nl/SSD-behuizing-Materiaal-Compatibel-Samsung-cruciale/dp/B08FC1RM6W/ref=pd_day0_147_5/262-6500393-7757723?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B08FC1RM6W&pd_rd_r=5636b3da-0fd9-4000-bff7-88c2aa05fab3&pd_rd_w=tTmtN&pd_rd_wg=UR1JU&pf_rd_p=e48bcd42-96cd-4196-8f32-3ab398954e6a&pf_rd_r=FDKTJFC8ZHKG4R35J1K2&psc=1&refRID=FDKTJFC8ZHKG4R35J1K2 Controller RTL9210 https://www.amazon.nl/UGREEN-Behuizing-Adapter-Compatibel-Aluminium/dp/B07NNL8VGB/ref=pd_sbs_23_2/262-6500393-7757723?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07NNL8VGB&pd_rd_r=7d94bba8-c2a3-402d-bc4e-2a0942f1b17f&pd_rd_w=q8jQH&pd_rd_wg=qymQz&pf_rd_p=3ffcc768-8ee4-412e-8184-e28d5f2fe7d5&pf_rd_r=8P6ETHSW6DERKAEM8XZD&psc=1&refRID=8P6ETHSW6DERKAEM8XZD Controller ASM2362 2 For the Backup I want an efficiënt approach without breaking the bank. What I'm thinking of is using a docking station ideally one that draws power from the usb port, and use internal HDD's. That way all the drives have the same physical size that makes it easier for organising/storing. Less plastic waste. Anyone thinks this is a stupid idea? Are the low priced internal HDD's better quality than the low priced external HDD's? Any docking station you would recommend? Maybe with two slots? (RAID or 2 backup's) Any brand or product you would recommend for HDD? At the moment SEAGATE Barracuda Compute has an interesting price tag in Europe. Since there's a lot out of stock in general (electronics, etc.) is it a good time to buy storage? Thanks!
  10. I browsed through amazon and found some enclosures that could be interesting. Anybody any experience with these? https://www.amazon.nl/SSD-behuizing-Materiaal-Compatibel-Samsung-cruciale/dp/B08FC1RM6W/ref=pd_day0_147_5/262-6500393-7757723?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B08FC1RM6W&pd_rd_r=5636b3da-0fd9-4000-bff7-88c2aa05fab3&pd_rd_w=tTmtN&pd_rd_wg=UR1JU&pf_rd_p=e48bcd42-96cd-4196-8f32-3ab398954e6a&pf_rd_r=FDKTJFC8ZHKG4R35J1K2&psc=1&refRID=FDKTJFC8ZHKG4R35J1K2 Controller RTL9210 https://www.amazon.nl/UGREEN-Behuizing-Adapter-Compatibel-Aluminium/dp/B07NNL8VGB/ref=pd_sbs_23_2/262-6500393-7757723?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07NNL8VGB&pd_rd_r=7d94bba8-c2a3-402d-bc4e-2a0942f1b17f&pd_rd_w=q8jQH&pd_rd_wg=qymQz&pf_rd_p=3ffcc768-8ee4-412e-8184-e28d5f2fe7d5&pf_rd_r=8P6ETHSW6DERKAEM8XZD&psc=1&refRID=8P6ETHSW6DERKAEM8XZD Controller ASM2362 Ineo seems to be making a few interessting ones. A rugged version but it has the JMS 853 controller though. Also Ineo doesn't seem to be available in Europe at the moment. Off topic question, is it a bad time to buy storage at the moment? I'm asking since lot's of pc parts prices are very high at the moment.
  11. Hi, thanks for testing these different enclosures. I might be interested in an enclosure as well. (located in Europe) I didn't want to start a new thread for this as I had a few questions more or less related to this topic. I'm debating wether I should go for Nvme or Sata as external drive. I'll be using it as work drives. Storing photo's (also when shooting tethered directly to the drive), transferring footage from camera card to the drive and might ocassionally edit using that drive. Are Nvme SSD's dramatically faster than Sata SSD's in an external enclosure? Is passive cooling as important with Sata SSD as it is with Nvme? Nvme's more future proof? Any new enclosures someone bumped into?
  12. I know they can't at the moment. That's why I said maybe will be able to. I saw a Youtube video today where someone was running Windows on M1 Mac through virtualisation. It seemed to run pretty smooth, but only very basic things were shown.
  13. Hi all, before I start, I don't want to start a discussion over which os is best. It's probably a bit a strange question with the multiple os's. And I don't know if it's possible. But what build would you propose for the details beneath? If it's not super urgent, is it better to wait a couple of months? Any new things that are going to come out? Maybe new Mac will be able to run Windows? Regarding the budget, might look for second hand parts. Are there parts that should not be bought second hand? 1. Budget (including currency): 800 Euro 2. Country: Europe Benelux 3. Aim: Would like a workstation open to multiple operating systems. Installed or through virtualisation. Windows Linux & Mac. I have never used virtualisation before, nor tested it. Do tell me if it's not a good idea. Why multiple? Would like to game (games beneath) Preference for certain uses / programs on certain os's. Used to interface and file organisation. Want to be able to go from macbook to workstation without too much issues. External Hard drive compatibility etc. 3a Gaming & Streaming on Linux or Windows Age of Empires 2 DE Age of Empires 4 Would like to have the option to stream. 3b Photoshop preferably on Mac Would use it very often for cleaning & grading 3c Davinci Resolve prefarably on Mac Would use it ocassionally (/ regularly) to edit & grade. 3e Blender on Mac or Linux or otherwise Windows After Effects on Mac Would use it seldomly. 3d Web browsing (probably) Maybe Indesign Maybe Capture one 4. Monitors: One monitor Will need one. Good for photography & grading. The professional ones are way out of my budget. Let's say a good one for starting out. 5. Other details I want to make my own pc case. For stylish reasons. Will probably start out open case to test etc. I want it to run quiet when fitted in my custom pc case. Quiet PSU needed. Will spend time on airflow and thermodynamics making the custom case. Will inclued extra fans (big ones) if necessary (do tell me if your suggested build needs extra fans) No RGB stuff or any of those things. (unless it's cheaper) Preferably not too big of a build. 6. Why are you upgrading? First build. I have a macbook and want this workstation build alongside my macbook.
  14. Thanks for the info on the Thinkpad T480! Just thought I'd let you guys know I went for a T440. AOE 2 DE runs smoothly on low settings. On the linux os it's quite buggy still though but I guess will get better with some updates.
