Your current one will work (probably just fine), but it's preferable that you ditch it. It's a dated, lowend unit with questionable reliability and protections.

The ATH-M20x sounds very close to how something sounds in reality so especially the timbre of all sounds are extremely correct.
For example, suppose you play a note on a piano, the note can have exactly the same frequency as another piano, but have a different timbre. The rich sound of real instruments is precisely because there is a broad spectrum of other sounds besides the pure frequency. And it's this that audio-technica does better than any other brands in my experience.

    Audio Technica ATH-M20x sound tests
AKG also does not always have the best build quality. Grado often has a rattling sound after a few months or years. audio-technica generally has no weak element in their build quality and is among the 5% of brands with best build quality.

This'll be a little rough due to the current market (not just for prices, mostly launches. Prices aren't too bad atm, and continue to get better). New (and seriously more performant) components are going to be launching 1-2 months before Black friday, and that's far enough into the future that it becomes hard to make a list that I can guarentee will be relevant in 6-8 months.

    A few things to remember:
    - Peripherals are very important. Don't skimp!
    - Windows can be transferred from device to device, no need to purchase another license (if applicable).
    - 2k for a computer is a very solid budget that can accomodate pretty high-end componentry. 4k is approaching Top of the line (and severe diminishing returns). I advise sticking with a build closer to the 2-3k mark and either saving the money or diverting it to peripherals.

Due to the date in which you plan to build, I just selected a template that I made to paste here. Feel free to ask questions/request changes if you'd like, I'd be happy to assist.

This message has some constructive criticism, and some commentary for @Linkfyre

    1. Yep, that is true. I like to overclock, but OP, if you don't plan to overclock (essentially only for fun) you can save around $150 by going with a b660 and a 12700/f, maybe even $200 as you wouldn't need as beefy of a cooler.

    2. I'm not sure of the full specs (primarily IO in contrast to the asus) but the MSI pro B660-a is going to have better vrms at the same price (with a black colour scheme!) So I think I would go with that motherboard.

    3. H212 is a solid little cooler, but you can go for better performance for the same price, or the same for a lill' less (se224xt, 225, 226, and scythe coolers).

    4. Corsair RGB Ram is pretty, but you're definitely not getting the best value there. This is more of a flavor preference, but you can get the same performance for $60 less if you sacrifice the aesthetics, or for $40 if you go with a slightly better kit from Crucial.

    5. 3080ti has it's advantages, but when you can get a 6900xt for $300 less, I'd go for it. OP, if you have specific workloads that you need an Nvidia GPU for, Perhaps consider it, but otherwise, AMD is what I'd favor.

    6. The case is another flavor preference, personally I'd go for saving like.. $60? And still get RGB, and better airflow in the phanteks p360a.

    7. OP, hardware unboxed (yt) and Rtings (website) are really nice sources for monitors, I would highly suggest going over to them and checking out their reviews/ roundups and seeing what suits you the best.

    8. The keyboard is mechanical yes, but personally I'd advocate for spending some more for an overall better experience. Leopold and especially varmilo offer many great options, at a relatively affordable price.

    9. I'm a bit of an audio snob, so take my comment with that in mind haha. Gaming headsets/headphones for several reasons generally sound pretty bad, and aren't something I'd recommend for most people. However, wireless (especially low-latency wireless suitable for gaming) is pretty hard to get for a headphone that sounds good. If you're fine with wired, the koss ur40 (kind of ugly, but for a very good cause) is quite nice, and for a little more the creative aurvana live! SE, and the akg k361 are nice headphones. For wireless, you have the Koss kph7 wireless, ksc35 wireless... and that's about it, until $180. All of these headphones lack a mic, so you'll need to add one on (either a dedicated, seperate mic such as the fifine k669b, a stick-on boom mic like the v-moda boom pro, or a laviler mic.)

Didn't realize the 6700XTs were so cheap (read: close to msrp) now, I second this.  Big jump in performance for not much money.

Also, the p12s are awesome rad fans but the f12s are better for airflow.  The p12s do work for airflow to (I did this once with p14s and it actually flowed pretty well), but optimal the f12s are about the same price for a airflow optimized fan.  Personally, if this is still to be a budget conscious build, fans are fans and I wouldn't buy new fans to replace ones that just werk, so I'd just use the stock one's on that case

For the RAM rec, it's probably fine, I have just always been averse to going with lesser brands than g. skill, crucial or corsair when saving less than $5.

Here's my two cents: As mentioned above, it is definitely a good idea to think ahead about peripherals and not skimping on them. For the audio, I can recommend the koss ksc75's, ur40, kph7 wireless, and ksc35 wireless for very cheap headphones that sound incredible for what you pay- with the drawback of their aesthetics. A more expensive option would be the creative aurvana live! SE. For speakers, I'd advise going with the creative pebble v2's, or the sayun sw208's if you care about aesthetic but not so much about sound (they don't sound significantly better than the pebbles). if you do care, the edifier r980t's for a little more are nice.
    List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2XvNPX

You'll be running a little toasty with this CPU on a stock cooler (upper 80 degres Celsius while gaming), You could go for an ID-cooling SE-224, 225, 226, or the Scythe Fuma 2 rev 2 if you wanted to tame temps, but you don't need it per se. I tossed in the 225.
For ram, just choose the cheapest 2x8 gigabyte, 3200mhz, ca latency (CL) 16 kit that you can find, like I did there.
The storage doesn't matter all too much, I went with a cheap-but-still-fine team mp34 drive, 1tb should be enough but there should be decent upgrade options for it.
6700xt's are continually decreasing in price, I'd just recommend the cheapest one most generally.
The case ships with 3 RGB fans, should be alright in this config.
Finally, the PSU can get as low as $50-$60 USD, you might just need a little patience to purchase it. Otherwise, a good option.

Seeing as you can get a significantly higher-performing card (6700xt xfx triple fan) for $600 USD- In the US at least- with practically no trade off on your part in terms of functionality... Go for that, or wait for prices to drop. 3060 isn't a particularly compelling card though, even at msrp.

Total marketing gimmicks. Unless proven otherwise (power figures, anybody?), assume it's going to be mediocre.
It'll depend on listening volume and your exact computer, it definitely has the potential to. hd600 isn't extremely hard to drive, but most devices will still struggle to drive it if you're not a quiet listener. However, you're really only going to be concerned about volume rather than quality for the amplifier, at least for the most part.
Not a bad plan, however, a dac/amp that you'd be looking at wouldn't really change the sound, by much if at all (provided that your onboard isn't screwed up). Just clean it up and amplify it.

There are other options out there that are available. The drop x sennheiser Hd6xx isn't far off from the sound of the hd600 while possessing a significantly lower price, and the Sennheiser hd560 is also an excellent option (especially for sound work), and although it sounds somewhat different than its 600 series brethren, It's easy to drive, and good in its own right.

Morning / Afternoon / Evening all.
I know I've been fairly absent for the last few months but I have returned (thankyou, thankyou, keep the applause coming)
After a recent purchase I figured it was about time to do another Mic test session to help people decide what type of microphone they should be considering purchasing if they want to step up from the standard USB and headset mic space.
I am by no means finished testing the microphones, I still have a few to go but I thought I'd post this here as somewhat of a taster.
There is another Klark Teknik CT1 that should be arriving in the next day or so to allow for tests with and without an inline preamp for the dynamic and ribbon mics.
There are also a few tube mics that will need some time to warm up that I will go through when I have the inline preamp in hand (will do a nice long test session)

Current plan is to test normal speaking voice about 15CM away from the capsule with a pop filter in place, 'plosive and sibilance testing included.
These mic tests have been and will be performed in an untreated bedroom with no reflection shield or anything of the like so it should be relatively comparable to most members here.
The tests have been performed using the same Gain on the interface (about a 3 o clock position) and I will break down the mics by category.
Audio files will be supplied as raw files and volume normalised so you can better see the sound quality and flavour differences
Below are the current plans for tests to do, all multipattern mics will be tested in cardioid with no low cut or PAD engaged.
Here are the RAW files recorded so far

    LARGE DIAPHRAGM TRUE CONDENSER
    - Edge Terminated (More similar to AKG Mics)
-ADK Vienna MK8 (Very bright, for acoustic guitar and pop / female vocals)
-Advanced Audio CM414 (Designed to be a copy of a vintage AKG C414)

    - Centre Terminated (More similar to Neumann Mics)
-Superlux CMH8C (Budget mic, out of production since 2001, managed to pick up a few NOS, great allround mics for when you just need to hear something)
-Groove Tubes GT67 (tube mic, a beast unto itself, not directly copying any one Neumann piece despite the name, Out of production for about 20 years)
-Advanced Audio CM47se (tube mic, clone of the vintage Neumann U47 with Peluso K47 capsule, excellent excellent microphone for male vocals)

    SMALL DIAPHRAGM AND ELECTRET MICS
-BM800 ($10 ebay special, sucks badly, will test with and without Phantom power so you can see how bad it is out of the box)
-Behringer C2 ($25 music store special, Good for the price)

    OTHERS
-Tbone MB75 (Clone of Shure SM57 that in the opinion of the internet sounds decidedly better than the original, will test with and without inline preamp)
-Random cheap stage mic from the pawn shop (will test with and without inline preamp)
-Cascade Audio Fathead 2 (Ribbon microphone, very dark sounding, Will test with and without inline preamp so you can see that it is absolutely necessary)

Let me know if you have any other requests / ideas so I can record them at the same time 🙂
    Thanks all

EQ isn't a solution to room modes. Peaks are the result of a resonance. While you can try to compensate for that amplitude peak with EQ, you can't compensate for the energy stored in that resonance. In practice, the energy stored in those resonances results in extended decay times for certain frequencies.

For the EE minded, think of it like an LC circuit. With low-loss parts, it'll ring for a disturbingly long time, usually when you don't want it to. Energy sloshes back and forth between the capacitor and the inductor until it eventually is dissipated through parasitic properties (mostly resistance). For the ME minded, think of it like a pendulum, or a mass on the end of a spring. Once you excite it, that bugger keeps on going for a while. A tuning fork is another good example. Energy is being converted from potential energy, to kinetic energy, back to potential, etc.

There are lots of great books on acoustics written by people much smarter than me. The usual solution tends to be fiberglass panels (Corning 703 is the usual choice) for mid and high frequencies, and resonant bass traps to attack the room modes. Some rooms are also deceptively crappy. For my first two years of undergrad, I lived in a new construction residence hall that had truly awful acoustics. It's been a few years, but from what I remember the ceiling consisted of a single layer of ~1.252 cm drywall screwed to steel studs (I want to say they were spaced about half a meter apart). That ceiling rang like a bell, and had a decay time on the order of 500 ms.

Headphones have their own issues, especially for production use. It isn't a "solution" to room issues. One big problem is that it's very easy to lose perspective for how loud things are when using headphones. This is part of why it's easy to suffer hearing damage when using headphones. I tend to be pretty conservative with audio levels anyway (both on speakers and in headphones). In my case, usually what happens is that I edit a video / EQ a track / whatever on headphones, trying my hardest to get it right. Then I'll play it back on monitors and say to myself "WTF dude, are you deaf? This sounds like ass".

    Hey, congrats!

You should use 24-bit; although the difference is literally inaudible, even to audiophiles (because only very very few expensive DACs reach more than 16 real bits of resolution in tests [see audiosciencereview]), technically if you have 24-bit files and play them at 16-bit, you're introducing aliasing to the waveform. This can be removed with dithering (players like foobar2000 have these features), but I think it's not worth the hassle.

Yes, in theory not only your headphones are not rated for >24kHz, but also human hearing doesn't go beyond 21kHz; but, if you have files that are saved at 96kHz or 192kHz, when they are forced to be played at 48kHz they get resampled, and resampling (just like before) isn't a perfect algorithm, and will introduce some form of distortion and noise. Again, it's probably not going to be audible or noticeable, but given it's literally a choice-in-the-dropdown away to get rid of, I'd suggest picking the highest sample rate.
