I work in IT support for a college.

I find it depressing that I had to teach somebody far more educated than myself, and who holds a degree in physics, that the reason their PC would not turn on was due to the fact the power to the room was out, which is also why she was currently sat in total darkness and why all the other electrical equipment in the lab was not working.

Not if they wanna stay competitive price wise I reckon.

I highly doubt it and don't see it happening soon. The life span of 4 is too short if you ask me, especially if you take Pro into the equation.

MrCthuntoo reacted to chiller15 in Our school's IT is dumb. I need help!
I am an IT Technician/Administrator in an 11-18 school in the UK, looking after all aspects of our IT infrastructure. I thought I'd share my two cents.
Our policy is six alpha-numeric characters and students can change their passwords, but only when they are already logged in. The most common issue is that they have forgotten it or someone else knew the password and has changed it. Giving pupils the ability to reset their passwords without being logged in is a no-no, as you cannot confirm the identity of the person resetting it. Which is usually why only admins or teachers (if given the permissions/a tool to do so...which I have given to our teachers) can reset passwords.
This is a purely safeguarding measure and is something that I personally implemented in our school and know that it is something that most other school's also do. It prevents inappropriate communication between the pupil and other individuals or groups. This could be anything from sexual grooming to extremism. Yes, the pupil could do this outside of school, but the school needs to protect itself.
Generally only the website content is managed by the school, with the actual website being a template from an online hosting company. It could even be that the content is not necessarily be managed by the IT team, but by another member of staff specialising in media or communication. As for the design, that could be a simple question of money. The IT team may not have the funding to implement a better or more modern website.
I'd consider chatting with them informally to understand why certain restrictions are in place, rather going straight to complaining. Some of the measures may even be out of the IT team's control and mandated to them by the school's management or even the governing body/council/ward (sorry, I don't know how school's are managed in your area).

its just a dick move to require a full HDCP 2.2 capable setup to watch Netflix/Amazon Instant video stuff in UHD you pay for this stuff you have fully capable Hardware but no you need a 10xx nvida graphics card or Kaby Lake CPU + Windows 10 + edge browser + monitor that also supports hdcp 2.2. And its so unreasonable because the people that want to break it will find a way to break it somehow someday. While 90 % of loyal paying consumers that consume this over a PC get fucked over.

What blanket rule would you have wanted? For example would a 10 minute video with a 1 second reaction at the end be fair use? You can't claim that all reaction videos are fair use. It will always be a case by case basis but with legal findings like this more guidelines are established.

Its the devs fault. You never update a tool that you don't maintain while in active development without extensive testing. Majority of the time you are better off sticking with the version you are currently using until your next project.

Also this doesn't belong in the news section. Maybe general discussion or games section.

We're following in China's footsteps here in the UK. Probably won't be too long before we see this in the UK if the current government has their way. Who needs rights?

Theresa May (our Prime Minister) has made it clear she has intentions to regulate and restrict what can be said, posted and seen on the internet, also making it clear that she will change human rights laws to accomplish that and make the UK "the global leader in the regulation of the use of personal data and the internet".

She wants an outright ban on full encryption, basically a scrapping of the rights to privacy and freedom of speech and regulation on what is and isn't acceptable on the internet (the UK Government seems to have an irrational obsession with what type of porn people are watching).

Basically, our government looks up to China in the way they handle internet access. Though, to become the "global leader" in internet regulation, that would mean surpassing North Korea as well. Say hello to Kim-Jong-May and her field of wheat and oppression.

EDIT: Of course, there has been no actual information on how they plan to really enforce or accomplish this, or how they're going to either find the massive amount of funds it would take or get companies to pay for it. I kind of hope big companies just pull services entirely from the UK, N.Ireland joins back up with the Republic, then I can move over there and leave the UK to sit in the mess that it has made for itself.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would Microsoft make OneDrive slow for Chromebooks and Linux?
Like if OneDrive is the only provider... Linux users tend to use Google services to start with. So what Microsoft gains form throttling the connection for its service to make it slow?

This is clearly different code being executed for web browser compatibility, and just was not updated for newer version of web browsers that doesn't face the bug/limitation of its Java-Script implementations or has a bug.

I have already seen the Web version of Office not work close to right under Firefox, but fine under Chrome and of course Edge, and next month the issue was fixed with some minor features not working right, like right-click menu position without having Firefox updated, and hold and behold, new Firefox version is out, and the problem is completely solved.
