  1. Update: I ran all 4 sticks individually using the free version of Memtest86 with the maximum number of 4 retests for each and the test didn't turn up anything. I tried to run Prime95 from the desktop, but whenever I started to run any test the windows start to populate then the program crashes to desktop without any error message. In addition I've installed windows on my 2nd SSD and had the same problems. Unfortunately I don't have any extra known-good DDR4 RAM, and I'm not sure I want to risk corrupting a hard drive if it isn't the hard-drives that are bad. Is it possible that I just got a bad motherboard, or is it more likely that I somehow got 4 bad sticks of RAM?
  2. Hello all, I recently purchased the parts for a new gaming PC and put them all together in the case; everything is running at factory stock speed. Here's my build specs: Windows 10 64bit Home Edition ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (WI-FI) - BIOS version 1201, latest AMD Ryzen 9 3900x 4x 8GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB DDR4 3200MHz RAM ROG Strix Radeon RX 5700XT T-FORCE Delta RGB (1TB) SSD boot drive ROG Strix 750W (750W 80+ Gold) Strix RAID DLX sound card Symptoms: Everything boots up just fine, and there aren't any general problems until playing videos or starting a game up. When watching YouTube videos occasionally there will be audio pops or crackling. The only consistent crackling I can re-create is from altering the volume slider on an audio frequency test video (20Hz-20kHz) on YouTube. When playing games the same audio pops and crackles occur, occasionally models and textures will start to bug (missing textures, stretched models, etc.), and eventually complete sound loss occurs. Shortly after sound is lost the game will either freeze or crash to desktop. After an event like this, other windows I open (ex. Firefox, Spotify, and Discord) will randomly lose all GUI icons (sometimes they flicker, sometimes they are gone altogether), however the programs continue to function (I started a YT video by clicking the white space in the correct area, and Discord sends notification sounds). The more I used the PC, the more frequent and severe these problems became, to the point where the Asus Strix RAID DLX audio card quality was terrible, and the output was a constant buzz tone when the virtual surrond tuning was turned on. Less frequently the bugs will occur in the Motherboard and RAM RGB lighting as well (see attached video). Troubleshooting: So far I have ruled out the following hardware in the order below (Until stated otherwise, below was tested using Factory-Stock BIOS and BIOS v1001): Audio Card - Replaced the Strix RAID DLX (and drivers) with a known-good Asus Xonar sound card; symptoms persist, but constant buzz is fixed. <-- Still installed for testing below PSU - Tested system with a known-good OCZ Fatal1ty 1000W PSU; symptoms more severe (graphics artifacts flashing at desktop, audio pops and crackles more frequent). <-- Swapped to ASUS PSU GPU - Replaced the Radeon RX 5700XT (and drivers) with a known-good GTX 970 from my old build; symptoms persist. <-- Still installed for testing below I've done some testing with the RAM before swapping GPUs by running the system with one stick at a time. Two of the 4 sticks had sound loss and CTD after a short time playing a game, and all four sticks resulted in a memory error on shutdown: "The instruction at [Hex#] referenced memory at [Hex#]. The memory could not be read." and reproduced the crackle when altering the audio range volume slider. After testing the RAM I reinstalled windows and deleted the files from the old image; the fresh install was stable, and I played a game for about 30min (longest time w/o a crash) with no issues. I restarted to install windows updates and after the updates experienced a CTD shortly after starting the game up. I then updated the BIOS to the latest version (1201). Again, the system was stable, but the audio range volume slider crackles persisted. I started up a game and played for about 2 and a half hours, and had audio issues. This time instead of pops and crackles it sounded like a game FX explosion that was time-slowed; all other sound was overridden when this happened. Eventually the graphics errors started happening, the sound cut out and recovered, but then cut out again and eventually the game froze. Current State: I've just about to reach the end of my rope in terms of how I know to troubleshoot a problem like this, but this is one tough Gremlin to track. I'm in the process of running Memtest86 on the RAM to see if one of the sticks is bad, and I plan to run Prime95 if Memtest doesn't turn up anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
