  1. I am making the switch to Linux at work, and I got told I can pick any distro I like. I have been browsing the internet for good distros and a friend recommended me Pop_OS! I downloaded the ISO, burned it to a flash drive, booted to it and it did not work. It says 'you need to load the kernel first, press any key to exit'. This is as far as I have got. The computer is one I built myself with an Asus Prime H410M-A and a Pentium Gold G6400. It should run, but it doesn't. Can someone explain to me what is happening here? It also won't boot on my ThinkPad X1 Carbon either
  2. He told me he used them in SLI, I can confirm as I went to collect them in person. I doubt he was a miner as he had a full RGB rig with I think it was a i7 7th gen something. He looked like just a gamer, however I don't know if he ever actually cleaned the GPUs and/or his system
  3. I would also really like to know the same. The PCIe riser I used was a generic one I found on Amazon, I doubt it was the riser as now its working in one of the servers at work. As for the GPUs, they were in an open mining case with plenty of ventilation, and the GPUs were spaced apart too
  4. I think it may have been the mining, as the GPUs were used for gaming before for a few years and the previous owner never had any issues. However undervolting probably would have prevented the issue? I'm not too sure
  5. The GPU I was using was a Corsair RM1000x which was left over from a project I never completed. Maybe it was just my bad luck, but the hardware I was using just kept failing eg. fried out RAM stick, motherboard failed. I doubt it was the mining fault however I managed to RMA all the components. Since then I haven't mined again on GPUs, but I do have 2 Antminer S9i in my garage running occasionally. And for the undervolting, I learnt about that soon after they died
  6. With my experiences in mining, the card has a shorter lifespan and I'm talking months until it dies. I had a small 2 GPU mining rig with 2x GTX 1070s and theyy both died within 5 months of 24/7 mining. I learnt that you need to undervolt the card slightly for better lifespan. I'm not a huge fan of miners and I mostly quit mining due to just not being worth it and I was spending more on hardware than actually making the money
  7. The card will die quickly, and the community hate miners too
  8. Hi, I recently got a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th gen for a very good price. I want to use it as my main computer which means I will need to hook it up to my monitors and peripherals. And ethernet of course. I'm wondering, what dock will work with it? I see so many options on the Lenovo website however I don't know which one will go with it. I understand it connects via USB-C
  9. I come into my office today, and I see this dumped on my ground. It hurts my heart to do this, however all these devices will be thrown out today 😞 For those wondering there is 2x Compaq C500, some generic android tablet, a HP Pavilion s3350, Dell Inspiron Zino HD (was used until yesterday) and a 2009 MacBook Pro with GPU issues (no wonder why its being thrown out)

And for those wondering, the green tape says 'Retired, Off loan. Wiped ready for recycling'

  10. Shame on you, roadworks

I currently have no broadband or telephone at my house. Roadworks accidentally cut the fire optic cable that delivers bandwith to the whole neighborhood

So now I had to dig up my old SIM to HSDPA adapter from Three (UK network provider)

It is slow as hell only reaching 2.2mbit at max

    :(

  11. Isn't that just called a donation, no? This is from their site "PureRef is available through a pay-what-you-want model as we believe that everyone who can will contribute what they feel PureRef is worth. If you want to try PureRef before you decide whether you want to support us or not you can enter 0 in the custom amount box on the download page"
  12. I have great news for anyone wondering about my car!

My Volvo V40 has returned to me safely and securely (no longer have to take the work shuttle aka old 2009 ford transit) In total I payed £3500 which is fine I guess. The scrap company was already trying to get their hands on it and already asked "We can pay you £2000 and take it right now" Obviously I passed as that's ridiculously low for such a good new car.

And I have also learnt that English garages aren't big enough to fit a car. Hopefully my UK fellas can relate too, unless you own a huge house with a giant garage then yes, it may fit

  13. I'm just wondering if I'm the only one emotinally attatched to my tech sometimes. I'm curious if people have the same thing as me, I have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop that I had since 2008. It has been through a lot with me (including my past 2 jobs too). I got it as a gift from my dad, at the time that machine was the hot stuff! It had a Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 which is notoriously known for failing. In this case, it has failed. I only keep it just becuase it went such a long way with me, I even used it for CNC machinery operation at one point. I'm emotionally attatched to it because of its quirky and odd design choices Do you also have a story like mine? Please tell me

Got my Nintendo Switch Lite today! I got it in…

I remember the day like it happened yesterday. It was me and a friend waiting in line (there was approx. 300 people in line) I remember we brought a tent and sleeping bags and also met a couple of nice friends too and we offered them a space in our tent (obviously pre-corona 2018) It was hella fun and also quite tough waiting, if I recall I waited 29 hours or so. If I had pictures, I would upload them here sadly my DSLR that I had at the time and the SD Card were sadly involved in a fire and both burned, never to be used again (this happened the next day) Didn't even get a chance to get the photos off it. Sadly the lens was burned too

Oh that one, I understand now. I did actually wait all day and night in line for Super Smash Bros Ultimate and I finally did get it but at the time, I couldn't get my hands on a Switch as they were basically out of stock everywhere (just like the GPU crisis with the 3080s and 3090s) So yea, however its no special edition, just the regular game

I totally agree, the pricings are sometimes extreme Also, could you clarify what you mean by game card case? Do you mean the actual case which holds the game or am I missing something here?
  17. Got my Nintendo Switch Lite today! I got it in turquoise along with Animal Crossing: New Horizons

I was gonna wait for the regular Switch to come back into stock but I really couldn't wait any longer to play ACNH, waited over a year for one

Games are hella expensive tho in my opinion

You know how Switch games come on a little card, and the box is many, MANY times the size of a card?
Well, my dad bought a case for just the cards that can hold 24 of them.

      60x24 = 1440, but a few were less than 60, so I rounded to 1400.

      There's 5 games that aren't in there.

Oh that one, I understand now.

I wish we had Smash, but it hasn't been on sale yet.

My cousin does though and whenever we're at his house we play it.

  18. I agree. It looks like the actual motherborard is the culprit. You could sell it for parts if its in alright condition and earn some money for it
  19. I'm no expert with mobile devices but it seems like maybe the motherboard could be the issue. But before we go for the latter, have you tried a different RAM DIMM? Those could also be the issue
  20. I have a Samsung UE55RU7100K 4K Smart TV in my bedroom but today it stopped working. I can hear the show playing and I can change the volume of the show but I can't see it. However I noticed, in direct sunlight I can see the picture clearly but there doesn't seem to be a backlight. Changing the brightness in settings also doesn't help. Can someone help me with this issue? This TV is out of warranty now so RMA is not an option. Do I have a blown LED or do I need a TCON board? Or maybe the PSU?
  21. Also I may have even worse news. Since the inductor is fried things like the PWM chip and various MOSFETs could be damaged. I think its an F for your video card sadly
  22. I don't think so. But in device manager, does it show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or NVIDIA GTX Titan X?
  23. I wouldn't think so as its them doing the repair and they should take responsibility for it
  24. Probably, however they could screw it up even more. But I think they would be able to do it. Its quite a large component so it would be quite easy
  25. Oh. Its quite a simple fix as its still a good card today. Do you know anyone that can do it for you?
