  1. I have now disconnected and reconnected everything and pulled and replaced the CMOS battery. It is booting from an NVME SSD, not an HDD (I was using a SATA SSD, I got an NVME SSD for this system and was moving the SATA to another). I can't get to any sort of menu, there is no video output or aything
  2. I was doing a clean windows install and moving an SSD from my main computer to a secondary one. I disconnected the SSD's SATA data cable before installing windows (just to make sure I didn't accidentally select it) and after I got Windows up and running, installed various programs, etc. Then I powered down the system and pulled out the SATA cord and disconnected the power cord from the SSD that had only been connected to the MB. Then I went to reboot the computer and it wouldn't post. The GPU is getting power as the LEDs light and fans spin on both cards tested. The VGA diagnostic LED on the motherboard is lit up and I took the following actions: - Reseated the GPU and its power connectors - Tried with a second GPU (an RX580) - Tried the RX580 in another PCIE slot (the 3080 is too bulky to fit in any other slot) - Redid the monitor connection and tested with an alternate monitor CPU: AMD R5 2600 MB: B450 gaming carbon pro PSU: MIS A850GF GPU: EVGA FTW 3 12GB RTX3080 Second tested GPU: AMD RX580 I plan to try stripping the whole thing down tomorrow, but any suggestions as to what may be the issue or may help.
  3. So I did that and it didn't help. When I boot the computer with no drivers it starts at 720 and runs fine up until either the automatically installed drivers are installed or I install drivers and then it steadily becomes slower until it goes to a grey screen and I have to hold the power button down.
  4. Hi, I installed a EVGA FTW 3 12GB RTX3080 in place of my Rx580 and my computer is unusably slow (as it it can five or ten minutes for a mouse movement or click to go through) on the desktop. I put the RX580 back in and it works fine. Anyt advice would be appreciated. I can't run Hardware Info or try to update Nvidea drivers or anything else because the performance is so bad. CPU: AMD R5 2600 MB: B450 gaming carbon pro PSU: MIS A850GF Windows 10 And yes I know the GPU is horrible overkill but I got a deal and am planning to upgrade the CPU in the future.
  5. Any advice on a cheap laptop for media/web browsing. A half-decent display and lowest price are just about all I care about since it will not see that much use. Max possible budget would be ~$400 CAD if I need to go with Windows but target is $250 CAD if possible. I was looking at Chromebooks in the $200-$250 CAD range, but I am totally unfamiliar with the Chromebook world and things to look for what to look for. One specific question I have for anyone with experience, can I install PIA on a Chromebook, Google seems to say "not officially but maybe"? Or is it only possible through the Chrome extension (which I assume means anything not viewed in Chrome isn't using the VPN)? Refurbished is fine. the heaviest expected use would be an online stream and a couple webpages, maybe running some content in VLC. Thanks
  6. I have some money to spend on them but cannot come close to justifying the cost of those.
  7. I have been looking into truly wireless earbuds and have some thoughts, but most reviews for ear buds focus on sound quality for music, which I don't really care about. I am looking for a pair that will primarily be used for listening to podcasts and some YouTube videos while on public transit and in the office. And they need to be available in Canada. Edit: just wanted to add I use an iPhone 7, likely to upgrade to an XR or 11 in the next six months or so. My priorities are in order are: 1) Loud enough to listen to on a crowded train 2) Long battery life on the earbuds themselves, in an ideal world I would want 9 hours but I am sure i can find times to recharge a bit here and there so not necessary, but 3 or 4 hours may be stretching it) 3) Useable microphone quality, doesn't need to be great just enough that the other person can reliably hear and understand what I am saying 4) Decent noise isolation/cancellation to avoid open office drone I don't really have a budget, but looking for good enough at a low cost. The Soundcore Life P2 ($60 and 7 hour charge, and reviews seem to indicate decent call quality, volume and isolation and seemed all around like an acceptable non-splashy option, but was hoping someone here may have more knowledge especially if there is something that might better fit just listening to podcasts rather than music.
  8. After finding basically no lower end PSUs on the second hand market and first buying one not paying attention and getting a PSU that only had one PCIe connector (luckily I noticed before opening it) so I had to go back and buy another. I got a new PSU in and I am pretty confidant that it did the job. thanks for the input.
  9. It would be not quite seven years old, I believe. I have no complaints about the service I got out of it (and was planning to upgrade for the sake of upgrading anyway before the issues started) Got it from NCIX around November 2013, long before I ever heard of some guy called “Linus” (actually found LTT while researching my replacement computer).
  10. Just hoping to get someone who knows more than me to say “yep sounds like a bad PSU”. Or if it is most likely something else and I just don’t know better. The symptoms say PSU to me, but my trouble shooting knowledge ends at unplugging stuff and plugging it back in or fiddling with settings.
  11. Thanks for the thought, but that just isn't practical. I would be better off getting a new PSU. As the issue in intermittent and I can't recreate it at will I would need to run the old PC for a few days to be confidant I didn't just get lucky. And I can't go without my main computer for a couple days (nor would I risk attaching a potentially faulty PSU to my good computer). In addition, as they are both non-modular PSUs, I cannot just quickly swap it back and forth either.
  12. Computer Specs AMD FX6300 CPU ASUS AMD Radeon HD7870 Thermaltake TR22 500W power supply MSI 970A-G46 motherboard BIOS version E7693AMS V2.5 8 GB (2x4) Corsair DDR3 Ram running at 80 Windows 8.1 64 Bit (6.3, Build 6900) (I have had many updates since this began occurring) Current Crash I am experiencing crashes with increasing frequency. There is no specific activity on the computer that seems to trigger it, sometimes running alright under load and sometimes crashing while idle. Upon crashing, the computer shuts down. The indicator LED blinks as if it in sleep mode, but the front power button does nothing when either pressed or held. I need to turn off the power supply and wait for the LED to stop blinking before turning the power supply on and booting the PC. The GPU and CPU are running at good temperatures and low usage during crashes per HWiNFO and Task Manager. As the issue seemed to be connected to power (due to requirement to cycle the power supply off and on) I checked the PSU exhaust and it is fairly warm, but I don't know what should be for reference. History Starting about a year ago when I played games, the computer would lock up with the display still active and making a loud buzzing type noise (and seeming to have some but not all items still running in the background) and I would have to hold the power button down to force a shut down and then cycle the PSU to restart. I got a new computer and used this old one for media and it was mostly reliable. The current crash replaced the old one over the past six months or so, generally if the computer was left on for hours. Recently it has become far more frequent. If this is just a matter of swapping out the PSU, that should be easy, but I don't want to get input if others may think it is something more before putting out money for one. Thanks for any thoughts
  13. I could fit speakers, but my TV stand has an area for DVD players etc that would fit a soundbar well. And I don't need particularly good quality of sound, so long as they work and hold up. Also, note that I am in Canada, the suggested items are twice the price here (or shipping from your link is almost as much as the items).
  14. I recently moved my TV and the built-in speakers are effectively useless in the new location. In canada looking at Best Buy and London Drugs I see a few around $100 but i have no idea about sound. https://www.londondrugs.com/vizio-36-in-2.1-ch-soundbar---factory-reconditioned---sb362an-f6c-rb/L0713104.html https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/polk-audio-signa-solo-sound-bar-open-box/12371931 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/toshiba-ty-sbx130-16-watt-2-0-channel-sound-bar-only-at-best-buy/11642383 https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/thonet-vander-250-watt-sound-bar-with-wireless-subwoofer/13967015 Any advice on a particular soundbar to get passable sound quality at a low cost and is it worth spending the money for a setup with a subwoofer? I am generally content with my built-in speakers so I don't need anything fancy and while I don't have a budget I want to minimize cost. A soundbar would fit better in my living room than speakers.
