Mr Nobody got a reaction from gan.neo in My First 3900X Build!
I just finished building my first PC. Originally I was going to go with a prebuilt, but after watching a ton of Linus' videos (as well as Jayztwocents and Bitwit), I figured I'd give building from scratch a shot. I'm glad I did.

The PC I replaced was a 2011 HP with an AMD chip with integrated graphics. That got a score of 375 on Cinebench R20, so it was obvious that the only place I could go was up. Building was a bit rough, as my original motherboard was DOA and wouldn't post. So I ended up tearing the build apart to order a replacement. So I guess this is my second PC build? ?

    The specs are:

    Ryzen 9 3900X
ASUS Rog Strix X570-E Gaming MB
    G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB DDR4
EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super FTW3 Ultra+ GPU
Corsair RMx 1000 W Gold PSU
2 X Inland Premium 1TB M.2 NVME SSD (which clock WAY faster than they are rated)
Western Digital Black 4TB 7200RPM HDD
Samsung 860 Evo 250GB SSD Boot Drive
    Corsair H150i Pro 360MM Cooler
9 X TT Riing Plus Premium Edition 120MM Fans (Which is my only regret, because cabling on these things SUCKS)
    LG 34UC89G-B 166Hz Monitor
    Creative Labs T30 Speakers

All in all it was a fun experience and I'm glad I did it. My cable management is terrible, but I managed to get the case closed. Gaming is way more enjoyable now, as this thing will take whatever I throw at it without even blinking. It went way over budget at around $4000 with all the accessories, but once I started picking parts I just couldn't convince myself to stop, lol. I haven't played around with overclocking it yet, but I expect to do so in the future.

Thank you so much to Linus for giving me the tools to make choices on how to build this, because I wouldn't have dared to do this otherwise.

Yeah, after reading the OP like 12 times I figured out that "cpuz" is a separate program that I had to download that there was no link to. I thought cpuz was referring to the information below the score in cinebench.

Also, if you're going to chastise people for not reading the OP, maybe you ought to put something in the title of the thread that says "read OP first". Because when I clicked on the thread, it brought me to the last page, and nowhere in the title did it say anything other than "post your cinebench scores".

To your first point, you're telling me that I can throw $20 in the trash and get $40 back? Shut up and throw away my money!

To your second, yeah, bingo. This forum has 600,000 members, and it's had as many as 11,000 online at the same time. I'd bet the number of people here who actually make this forum a part of their daily life number no more than 1,000 right now, with large numbers of others finding their way here from a video or to ask a question. Because those 1,000-ish people are regularly interacting with LTT both through videos and through the forum, it's natural to expect that those 1,000 people will be more vocal, and that their opinions will be magnified here.

So you've got 1,000 people, some of whom are expressing unhappiness with this title thing, and one person who has said they'll leave. Fair enough, and if all 1,000 of us unsubscribed, LTT wouldn't notice. There are 10,299,000 other subs to take our place. If one person unsubscribes because they don't like a business practice that is 100% ethical and legal, cool story bro. There are 10,299,999 others out there that apparently don't care enough to unsubscribe--if they care at all.

LTT (and LMG) is a successful business. They got to be that way by doing things that make money. As long as the things they do to make money are ethical and legal, hey, if someone doesn't like those practices, they're welcome to leave. At the rate LTT's grown over the last few years, there will probably be 100 people who subscribe to take their place. Again, capitalism.

    Give the Supreme Court time....

$400 is the minimum threshold. Considering Rockstar sells an $8,000,000 GTA Shark Card for $99 and my earnings in game are about $10,000,000 per week if I'm really grinding, I think that threshold is easily reached.

I wonder if it is a matter of time before the IRS tries taxing the virtual currency that you earn in game, as opposed to just the virtual currency you buy in game. When that happens, I have a few questions:

    1. Am I considered self-employed when I am earning virtual currency?
    2. Do I have to pay sales tax on items I purchase in game?
    3. If the virtual currency that I earn is as the result of criminal activities (like in GTA), does this open me up to prosecution for virtual crime?

If I had to wager a guess, it's because they consider in-game currency and items to be commodities that can be purchased with real dollars, and therefore are subject to taxation. I agree that it's stupid, but then again I think all taxation is stupid.

Stressful. I was certain I would screw something up royally and make my $3000 investment worthless. I got the components installed and practically cried when I looked at the mess of wires that I needed to "cable manage" (if you can call what I did cable management).

And when I fired it up for the first time? Nothing. No BIOS, just fans running at 100%. I spent hours disassembling and reassembling trying to figure out what I did wrong, but eventually I gave up and called ASUS tech support, thinking it was possibly a dead motherboard. The extremely helpful tech support guy walked me through troubleshooting it, removing one component at a time, and then jumping it. The conclusion we came to was that it was either a dead motherboard or CPU, so I was proactive and just exchanged both.

But when I reassembled it and hit that power button....wow what a sigh of relief!

On the plus side with all the assembly and disassembly experience I can now tear down my PC completely in about 10 minutes, lol.

They actually can be. A car these days can carry a salvage title for purely cosmetic damages. If a car is stolen and the insurance pays out on it, and the car is later recovered, it is dinged with a salvage title. Same goes for some hail damage cars. I recently saw a Youtube video of a Ferrari that had a salvage title, solely because the car had hit a curb and scraped the undercarriage of the car. The damage was purely cosmetic, but the carbon fiber undercarriage was integral to the car to the point that the entire chassis would have to be replaced to get rid of the gouges.

    Insurance is weird like that.

In many states, if you buy a car with a salvage title and you repair the car, you get it inspected by the state and then they rebrand the title as "rebuilt".

So I recently saw a long finished Kickstarter campaign video for this thing called the Hypercube. Problem is, they want $400 for the 15" version. So I decided to build my own.

The led strips cost me $54, the plexiglass cost me $70, the one way mirror film was $8, and there was about $9 worth of cedar lumber. I'm sure the commercial version has far fancier software running it, but for $250 less, I think mine turned out great!

Okay, just to show I am not a spoil sport, I will repost. I made some changes anyway (I got rid of the Innovation Cooling Graphite Thermal Pad that Linus did a video on a few months ago because my CPU was thermal throttling at stock speeds. I replaced with Noctua NT-H1 and then did a mild overclock)

Every time I mess with the RAM timing the system won't post. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but yeah the timings are way off what they are supposed to be.

I figured out what I was doing wrong in BIOS. Now it's running at the correct settings for the RAM.
