  1. I have a friend in need of a new laptop. Her requirements aren't too strict but I'm more of a PC guy and have limited knowledge on the laptop side. Her budget is about $600 USD and needs a built-in webcam and touchscreen capabilities.Any assistance/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I think I'll see what the MSRP will be on those 2 CPUs and the benchmarks vs the 5600X. That should better inform my decision there. As far as the GPU goes, I guess the question is for a budget like mine, which is the better choice: NVIDIA or AMD?
  3. Budget (including currency): $1200 USD (does not include the cost of a potential dual monitor upgrade) Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Primarily for Steam games (Age of Empires II, Ark Survival Evolved, Battletech, Horizon Zero Dawn, Sea of Thieves, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Subnautica, Tekken 7). Some light programming (HTML and PHP) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I have compiled the following parts list on PCPartPicker: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/fs_duke/saved/#view=qWk34D I already have purchased the motherboard and RAM from this list. I'd like to be able to play at 1080p on my current monitors (an Asus VN247 and an Acer S211HL) but eventually upgrade my monitors to be able to play at 1440p at a half decent refresh rate; I'm still researching this part of the build but any suggestions would be appreciated . My current parts list has a Ryzen 5 5600X CPU as a placeholder for the upcoming integrated graphics CPUs from AMD; the Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G. My existing rig is an Intel based system and the integrated graphics has allowed me to keep using it while I had to send my AMD RX 580 in for RMA. Ideally, I'd like to have the same type of CPU in my new build for redundancy. I'm leaning towards the Ryzen 7 5700G but of the two, which would be best suited for me based on my parts list? My list also has an RTX 3060 as a placeholder because I'm not completely sold on this GPU (although because of the current GPU shortage, this appears to theoretically be the least expensive option for a current GPU). Given the game titles that I'd like to be able to play and an eventual update of my monitors, what would be the best GPU (assuming a pricepoint closer to MSRP than the current scalper prices) to pair with one of the upcoming 5600G or 5700G CPUs? I would appreciate anyone's additional input on this as I continue to plan and watch the marketplace.
  4. UPDATE: In continuing to research this problem, I found the following post on the AMD Community forum: https://community.amd.com/t5/general-discussions/i-fixed-my-black-screen-issues-by-increasing-the-default-fan/td-p/254918 It appears to lay out a potential fix for the issue I'm experiencing but I'm a little apprehensive with modifying these tuning settings. How dangerous to my GPU would making the adjustments laid out in that post be?
  5. Current components CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 Motherboard: Gigabyte H97M-D3H running BIOS 2.7 GPU: (newly replaced through RMA) XFX Radeon RX 580 (part code RX-580P8D8D6) OS: Windows 10 Home Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.1110) RAM: 4x4 G.Skill DDR3 F3-12800CL9-4GBXL PSU: SeaSonic S12II 520 W Since the end of May, I've been into an issue where I'll load any games from my Steam library and it'll load just fine. No unusual spikes in temperature or fan speed according to NZXT CAM and GPU-Z. I'll get approximately 5 to 10 minutes of gameplay and both of my monitors will go black; no display signal. Initially, I thought my GPU was at fault and sent it in for RMA. XFX sent me a replacement card and I'm still getting the same results. Ironically, if I switch my monitor inputs to the CPU integrated graphics, everything is fine. If the physical card isn't the problem and all of the display drivers are up to date, what else should I be investigating? Any suggestions would be appreciated; this has been driving me nuts!
  6. Quick update on this issue: I went through and did a clean uninstall of the AMD drivers and reinstalled everything. I also ran sfc /scannow for good measure and the utility did repair an issue. I launched into Solasta and set up GPU-Z to log to file the sensor log (see attached). The temp gets up to 75 C before I get the black screen. It's odd because it's been hotter than that last summer and worked fine. Again the GPU is only a year and a half (purchased in February 2020). Before going down the RMA route, is there anything else I can try to fix the issue? Tagging @wat3rmelon_man2who was helpful earlier in the week GPU-Z Sensor Log.txt
  7. I also found this older post and wondered if this might apply to my situation since doing an RMA is not feasible at this time and would leave me without a PC:
  8. Not that I noticed. I use NZXT Cam for monitoring and I do remember seeing the temp spike to the 70 C range prior to the crash.
  9. I've been running into an issue with my system recently where it will crash after approximately 5 minutes of gameplay in 2 of my Steam games (Horizon Zero Dawn and Solasta Crown of the Magister). After a hard reboot, my system will come back up but will not be able to load the display drivers. This has occurred with AMD Radeon software version 21.4.1. To get things back to normal, I have had to either reload the drivers manually from the AMD website or do a system restore back to before the shutdown. The fans are not spinning currently but if I remember correctly, the fans only spin when the card is under load. I did a little research on this already and read an online post about a similar issue with an RX580 where the PSU needed to be replaced. My PSU is the original from when I first built this rig about 6 years; the GPU is only 2 years old. My question is: Could the PSU be the cause of the failure? Or is there another avenue I need to investigate? For reference, my PSU is a SeaSonic S12II 520W 80+ Bronze.
  10. Apologies. Here's the public link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RCfhcT
  11. Budget (including currency): 900-1000 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Primarily gaming; Ark Survival Evolved, Battletech, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Horizon Zero Dawn Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I made a PCPartPicker list (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/fs_duke/saved/gMXBLk). I plan to invest in better quality monitors as funds permit so any suggestions in that regard would be appreciated. Budget for each monitor would be around $250-275 USD
  12. I run a dual hard drive setup: I have a 120 GB SSD with my OS on it and a 1 TB mechanical HD for all of my other programs (mainly Steam games). I am running out of space on both drives and am looking into upgrading them to 240 GB SSD and 2 TB mechanical HD. What is the best method to swap these out?
  13. Budget (including currency): $900 US Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Looking to be able to play Ark Survival Evolved at at least 60 fps on Epic settings. Also want to be able to play Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and Battletech at 60 fps as well. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): My current specs on my rig: Intel i5-4460 Gigabyte H97M-D3H motherboard XFX Radeon RX 580 2 x 8GB of G.Skill DDR3-1600 RAM PNY CS1911 120 GB SSD (boot drive) - I have a new 240 GB SSD that I plan to upgrade to this weekend Seagate 1 TB mechanical hard drive SeaSonic S1211 520W I have done some research and working out some of the components for a new rig. My plan is to save my money for the next 12 months in order to afford this build. I want to put together a component list now and then revisit it again in 6 months to see if there are any alternatives to my selected parts. Right now I have the following selected: CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M AORUS PRO Micro ATX AM4 Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x8 GB DDR4-3600 CL16 Storage - boot disk: PNY CS911 240 GB (used in existing rig) Storage - data drive: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 7200 RPM internal HD Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A Power Supply: Seagate S12III 650 W 80+ Bronze For the GPU, I have a budget of between $270-$360. In looking on Newegg, I'm seeing a few options within my budget: GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, Radeon RX5600XT and GeForce GTX 2060. Of those three, which would be the best bang for the buck? I should mention that I am currently running a dual monitor setup that would carry over to the new build: the monitors are an Acer S211HL and an Asus VN247; roughly the same size but not quite. Both monitors work at 1920x1080 with a 5ms refresh rate. Ideally, I'd like to replace them both with more current monitors of the same size and better resolution and refresh rate but that would be separate from my budget for this build. Any suggestions on monitors would be appreciated.
  14. I could use some help from the hive mind to plan my next build Budget (including currency): $900 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: primarily gaming (Ark Survival Evolved, Battletech, Subnautica, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order) on high settings at 1080p or 1440p if it's within my budget Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I plan to carry over my current boot drive (soon to be expanded to a 240 GB SSD) and my 1 TB mechanical HD (although I may expand to a 2 TB Seagate hard drive prior to this build) I currently have a dual monitor setup: an Acer S211HL and an Asus VN247. I would consider purchasing a single current monitor that could display at 1080p and a decent refresh rate. Here are my current specs (some components have been updated from the original build): Intel i5-4460 Gigabyte H97M-D3H motherboard XFX Radeon RX 580 2 x 8GB of G.Skill DDR3-1600 RAM PNY CS1911 120 GB SSD (boot drive) - I have a new 240 GB SSD that I plan to upgrade to this weekend Seagate 1 TB mechanical hard drive SeaSonic S1211 520W
