If you care about performance, have a caching system, it will literally matter 10-100x a much as going from 5400 to 7200RPM.

If you're not using caching, the 7200RPM drives will be around 33% faster but they are generally less reliable and use more energy. The yearly increase in power costs for a drive that's on ALL the time (or 4) is often enough to justify going with the slower drive.

As an FYI, if your caching system is dumb (e.g. LIFO, LRU, etc.) then bigger NAND, SSDs tend to work slightly better. If it's smart (mix of LIFO + LRU along with pre-fetching) then a smaller amount of optane will work better. $7-10ish sticks of optane are "good" mostly because they're super cheap now.

Be careful with the Red drives, double check if they are cmr or smr drives. The smr drives are going to be much lower performance, designed for long term storage.

Make sure it's WD Red Plus

Look good, everything sharp enough, minus 1-2 apps blurry, but only the icon, text all good

222feb23 reacted to emosun in Some question about 1440p monitor ?
1440p is an in between resolution that will yield these kind of results.

The monitor doesn't match most created content and scaling will have some strange results if you aren't using things like the UI at the correct scale. I'd suggest scaling everything to 100% and getting used to it.

So, 4K 144Hz sadly is out because of budget reasons. But this will make most of your 3090.

The next best option is 3 1440p high refresh monitors.
The currently best 27" 1440p 144Hz+ monitor where 3 of the same would fit in your budget is the LG 27GP850.

I think it a bug because the "460.79 nvidia control panel quick start guide" still have show "adaptive" and "optimal power"

aurum S is pretty bad quality psu. should get better one. 600w is plenty but that psu is crap.

yeah  basically but I would also say wait a few months, looks like Nvidia has something better up their sleeves still - there's always something better coming, sure, but in this case it might be worth waiting a few months and hopefully prices will settle too, though you can't do much wrong with a 3070 right now either if you don't totally need more VRAM

222feb23 reacted to Mark Kaine in Best GPU for 1080p 60hz monitor ?
Well as I said in my experience that isn't the case, I can basically play none of my games (with exception of a few VN style indies) at Max settings/60fps and 1650 super is 2% faster than my card (?) so I doubt it'd would make a big difference.

The only time these low end cards make sense imo is when someone really doesn't have the budget for something better or primarily plays"Esports" titles which apparently run acceptably even on a potato... (Which admittedly is a huge market but I just wouldn't generalize it like that and having some headroom for the future can't hurt either)

Wait for 3070, you'll have enough power for years to come and you won't need to upgrade it again in a year when you upgrade the rest of your PC.

I really wonder what games you're playing that you think low/,mid range GPUs are good enough for 1080/60, in my experience that's a not the case at all. Especially not at max settings...   "Esports" titles maybe?

Yes, a 2070 would be a good option maybe, but why do that when the 3xxx series is coming out, and the 2xxx wasn't that good either way (neither performance nor reliability)

I'd get either the 6TB Blue or Barracuda. Whichever is cheaper/in stock/brand you trust more.

Then I'd say get the WD Blue if speed's really not important, or the Black if you'd also want the drive to be decently quick.

222feb23 reacted to Net Runner in Do i need to convert my drive to GPT when install windows 10 ?
If you do not plan to install another operating system side-by-side with your Windows 10 I would go GPT and UEFI boot since in most cases it boots faster. Yet we are talking about several seconds since Windows 10 boots pretty quick anyways.
If you are going to experiment with other operating systems like Linux of any flavor or plan to upgrade hardware or disk drives, cloning or virtualizing your existing Windows installation I would stick to MBR since as already mentioned above it's much easier to fix if it has some boot-up issues.

222feb23 reacted to Master Disaster in Do i need to convert my drive to GPT when install windows 10 ?
No but if your system is UEFI compliant then you will want GPT as it allows Windows to install in UEFI mode which enables secure boot, fast boot and some other stuff. In 2020 there's no reason to not use GPT TBH, MBR is long deprecated and Windows only still supports it for legacy reasons.

If you want to Install Windows on a 2TB or bigger drive then GPT (or more accurately GUID) is required. Also MBR only allows a small number of partitions on a drive (I forget the exact amount), GUID allows for up to 128 partitions on one drive plus there's no need to differentiate between Primary & Extended partitions on GUID. Finally its much easier to fix a broken EFI bootloader than it is an MBR one.

Boot from your Linux installer in recovery mode then do sudo grub-update

Get gpu and monitor now, you'll see a big increase in performance. You can upgrade cpu and mobo later. You will probably be limited by the cpu after the upgrade, but not by much.
