    No, it will not.

However, I might recommend you doing a DBAN or zero-write nuke of the drive (basically formatting it multiple times and overwriting with random garbage data), simply to ensure that any school data is completely erased.

Frankly, it was ridiculously irresponsible of them to give you a HDD that still had a school Windows 8.1 installation on it. Yikes - can't imagine what kind of personal data they may have let out the door. Fortunately, you installed Windows 7 overtop, so likely the data is gone, but I would personally wipe it again anyway just to be safe.

You could also simply download CCleaner (or equivalent utility) and run the "clean free space" command. Basically it does the same thing as DBAN, but just over the free space of your HDD - this way, you don't lose any of your current files, nor do you need to reinstall Windows or anything else.

I would suggest you take a look at Thunderbird. It's by the same company as Firefox. It's simple and easy to use.

Redportal got a reaction from leadeater in Thinking about building a backup/TS server, any suggestions?
I'm not sure why your suggesting a rack server, the chances are the OP doesn't have a dedicated rack. Instead they are looking for something to host a TS Server and to perform backups to. Not that a rack server wouldn't be able to perform these tasks, but personally I think you want your backups to be reliable and up 24x7. This is less likely to be the case with an old server.

It can all be done on a simple desktop PC, or even some modern NAS units.

If you have a good / ok understanding with Linux I would strongly suggest you check out Synology NAS units. These are great little backup boxes for the price and many of them can be upgraded with more RAM / Drives if you need to in the future.

Alternatively you can get yourself a cheap desktop / tower server. If possible purchase a desktop with a basic configuration but preferably with (at minimum) software RAID. (Motherboard level)

    Just be sure to get:
    1) Gigabit link (depends on your network)
    2) 1GB of Ram per TB of backup space. (2GB For the OS)
    3) Raid Support.

    That would be my suggestion.

There are used servers on ebay that come in tower form factors also. Used servers are still very reliable, more so than even a new desktop PC or NAS. Businesses decommission them when the warranty expires, they will run for many years after that with no problems. I've had old servers running for 15+ years.

I do agree that a rack server is not the best idea, not just for being best to actually put them in a rack but they are louder and more sensitive to heat/environment than a tower.

Synology or QNAP are very good pre-built options, only down side is price but you get what you pay for and they are worth it. Linux isn't really a factor at all with these even though that is what the OS is, all you interact with is a very simple and clean web interface which for the majority of users is a very good thing.

If it's purely a price consideration then nothing will beat a used server off ebay, tower or rackmount, but there are down sides. They are large in size, have no warranty so even though they are reliable everything can break, and require more configuration/setup than a NAS or desktop PC.

Another consideration to note is that home plugs need decent or good quality electrical cables and outlets.

I've experienced this problem at a number of different site locations, and sometimes the connection can drop or even slow down if someone plugged a phone charger into the socket beside the home plug. I don't know this for sure, but I don't really know what else it could be apart from the existing electrical cables.

My suggestion would be to run a cable like you suggested, then as mentioned above you can use either another router in bridged mode, or if your a security geek get a switch and go all wired.

If you're looking for a quick way to possibly make them a little quieter, most servers have a bios option labeled "Power Setting" set this to power save or Dynamic power save. This should keep the fans spinning slightly slower, additionally if the server comes with a dedicated management port (In your case IDRAC) you might be able to configure additional fan settings in there.

Firstly it doesn't matter if you host it or not, no one is completely safe from attackers.
As for the web server if your using a plain (vanilla) version of IIS you don't have anything to worry about. Your biggest issue here might be if the server has a public static IP. In which case you need to lock down your remote desktop settings (RDP). As attacks will most likely attempt to brute force your login and try to gain access that way.

Another level of security might be to add a .htaccess file to restrict access to a white list or blacklist. Here you can grant permissions based on user / password combos or IP level filtering.

If you would like more info about the above just let me know and I would be happy to help.

I can't exactly be sure as I can't seem to find any detailed information or specification on that case, but from the looks I would say yes it will fit.

My advice would be careful though, some longer cards might have a hard time fitting in due to the drive cages, nothing a little DIY can't fix though.

The space inside the case for a GPU (blue) is almost 12", +-0.5". A MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4 G is 10.5" long, so it will fit with maybe a centimeter to spare.

At the school I work at, we keep a simple excel spreadsheet of networking devices (Switches, routers, cctv cams and access points.).

Alternatively you can setup reservations on your DHCP server (Providing you run your own) this would allow you to view which IP is assigned to which device. You can setup notes for each DHCP reservation / filter if you are using them, then when it comes to finding a switch we can look at "room21" then find its assigned IP address. There are also many external tools you could use, but I won't cover them here. (To many to list  )

The above example was running windows server in case anyone was wondering. I guess that answers how in depth we go, basically an excel sheet with notes assigned to each device in DHCP, Excluding desktops, laptops etc, we only write notes with the networks components.

Look's like a very nice interface, however after reading the specs I would not spend more than £30 on this device.

I would like to see this company develop the router however at the moment it's really not worth it.

No Dual band wifi With all features enabled it can only reach around 100Mb/s per port No built in modem Calls it's self anti-flood (All it talks about is helping fix local congestion, not dos/ddos)
Compared to other asus and netgear routers the router you are looking to buy is really expensive for such limited specs. Yes it provides you with a fancy GUI and some cool vpn features, but so do other routers. PLUS MORE!

My personal opinion is that don't trust every product that has the word gaming in it. I would think anyone who buys this would be disappointed with it's performance.
If anyone has a physical unit of this router, I would also like to hear your thoughts.
