    cdawe got a reaction from alpenwasser in RAID Card, Drive Choice and MOBO Appropriateness
    @alpenwasser, @wpirobotbuilder, @Vitalius:

    Guys, my unending thanks for this discussion! Honestly, I've learned more in these two pages than I ever imagined I would about these RAID cards and drives.  Vitalius, I think your idea of that OS that can manipulate where things go on the Hard drive does, indeed make a lot of sense.

    I'm fascinated my the stats that you brought up too, alpenwasser  ... it totally sheds new light on my ideas about which drive to use.  All the same I have to admit,though, I think that after this discussion, the RE (or SE) drives do still have a somewhat greater feeling of "seeming solidity"  :unsure:  to them, in terms of BER, even if I am a consumer.  I'm not sure though if they're worth the price, given what you guys are saying.

    I know one thing, though. My mind is made up firm as concrete about the RAID now.  Like (I think Vitalius) noted, the fact that even if a URE occurs on the array, that sector? can be marked bad and the data then reconstituted by parity data ... well gents, that to me is the power of making a RAID. I know that it's not backup per se, but I think that it adds a tremendous amount of security for a serious home user like me.  LOL ... I guess the truth is, I'm a self-professed geek and concessions aren't me at all. I know. I need help. Pray for me.

    Glad to hear LSI is OK. Their card is much less expensive in the 8i iteration that the 8 drive monster that Adaptec uses. I think I'm going to try to do a bit of digging to find out if my MOBO will play nice with the LSI people's product. Somehow I think few ppl will have made this kinda home-brew beast.

    Still ... who knows? Must be someone out there who's got their geek on too ... if I'm outa luck on this MOBO ... any suggestion as to a good one to use that doesn't cost an arm/leg/other appendage?

    Thanks so much guys!
