  1. These are results / temperatures after 1 hour of running Prime95 Blend test. So, can we say, that these are ok ? Can I manage cables, tie them up, close the pc and "forget" about it ? What I am a bit surprised, that noctua wasn't even ramped up. The cpu probably considered those temps ok, and didn't feel need to speed fans up.
  2. Ok thanks, and is 5 minutes ok, or should I torture the CPU for more ? Can you recommend me program / settings / duration after which I can say "these are my temps during load" ?
  3. Hello, yesterday I have completed my first build (actually second, but this one is my personal ). As for the CPU I have i7 4790k cooled by Noctua NH-U14S (that noctua almost didn't fit my Obsidian 450D, I had to lower the fan a bit more on the fins. But back to the topic - temperatures for CPU are in my oppinion weird. I have used Noctuas bundled NH-T1 thermal paste - I made a blob with diameter around 4-5mm as Noctua suggests, put heatsink on and tightened with screws. I hve always been spreading, but I wanted to give a try to "pea-size" method. The temps: At idle - the temps are 30-33 deg. Celsius for all four cores, for package it is 35 deg Celsius. That seems perfectly right, right ? My ambient temperature is about 24,5 deg. Celsius. But then comes temp spikes: whenever I open ZIP file - i noticed it for example during driver unpacking - the cpu load wasn't even 20%, but temps jumped to around 50 degrees. Same for the idle at night - I left openhardwaremonitor open during night, to make temperature plots and capture max temp. Again, around 50C was max temp during night idling ! But now, after 5 hours of idling, the temp is mentioned 30-33 for cores, 35 for package. I also tried Prime95 - first method (maximum heat), temps didn't raise above 75 degs after 5 minutes. Is this behaviour ok, or shoudl I worry, or redo my thermal paste ? I would like to avoid this, as mounting the heatsink on Secufirm was already a bit difficult to me - I coudln't get second screw "catch the screw", so my heatsink was moving a little bit. But I think, i haven't lifted it since putting on paste, maybe once. I have everything tightened for max (i am notoriously famous for destroying things, as I tend to overtighten screws ) Also, there is strange behaviour in temp monitoring. On my MSI Z97 gaming7 board BIOS in main window I get CPU temp 35C and when i switch to hardware monitor, it shows 42C.
  4. Ok, so I should be perfectly fine then, right ?
  5. Yes, that's right, but I have came through tons of stuff regarding importance of proper alignment of sectors to physical sector on hard drive. The problem would be if 4K OS sector spreads across 2 of HDDs physical sectors, which would decraese performance dramatically - HDD has to read 2 sectors instead of 1 etc... I want to avoid this and use things properly.
  6. Hello, I've bought Western Digital 2TB Caviar Black hard drive for my upcoming pc build. As the name states, the drive does support / has Advanced formatting. On the hard drive package, there is note recommending to visit western digital website to check infomation about advanced format http://wdc.com/global/products/features/?id=7&language=1 The website states / tells to use WD align utility after installing Windows XP, Vista or 7. Now, I will be using windows 8.1. I will put my OS on SSD, and the data will be on WD Black mentioned above. How do I do this ? 1, I install my operating system normally on my SSD drive. 2, I boot operating system. 3, I quick format my WD Black HDD using windows built-in format tool ? And set sector size to 4096 bytes / 4K ? Is this correct, or do I need to use the utility also on windows 8 ? According to this http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848035(v=vs.85).aspx Windows 8 should support 4K sector size out of the box. Thanks for answers and srry for such noob question.
  7. Thanks, but one more question: Can I make windows to install in UEFI mode using installation DVD ? I have read some articles regarding creating UEFI bootable usb - but as far as I understand, it's only to make uefi able to boot from this usb stick. Then I should be able to install Windows 8.1 from DVD as long as the optical drive supports UEFI booting, right ? Because when i Switch bios to uefi mode (disable legacy), I will only be able to boot from uefi compatible devices, right ? To clear things up: I have windows 8.1 installation *.ISO downloaded from msdn using my student license. What do I have to do in order to install windows in pure uefi / gpt mode ? Thanks
  8. Thanks man, finally something nicely and understandably explained. And what about data drive ? As my data partition - HDD - will not be used for boot, just for data. Can I make it MBR partition system ? My reason to do this: whenever my system is messed up and fails to boot, i boot up any random linux distro (Ubuntu LiveCD for example) and can read contents of my data drive. ^ Another words: what do you recommend for DATA harddrive (it's separate from OS) - MBR or UEFI - I will never boot from it. Will be there some advantages running data drive as GPT / disadvantages running it as MBR partition system ? As I understood correctly, there is no reason to go for GPT unless I plan to UEFI boot from it. UEFI makes able to boot 2TB+ hard drives, but I need to set GPT on them, right ?
  9. Hello, as I have already ordered parts for my build, I also started reading "what, where, how, why" has changed since my last computer installation / build. What is new for me is UEFI. The board that I ordered - Msi Z97 Gaming 7 has UEFI bios, and it also supports UEFI or Legacy mode of booting / installation of operating system. Now, what is this all about ? What are basic pros / cons of UEFI comparing to old BIOS ? From what I've red untill now: +uefi supports 2TB+ hard drives as bootdrives +boot times should be slightly better -imaging software such as Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost doesn't support GPT partition systems ->so if I understood correctly: MBR is not supported on Uefi windows installation ->GPT is supported, but Imaging Software can't read that correctly (actually I don't really care about imaging software, I rather do clean install) ->UEFI boot and UEFI bios are different things ++->uefi BIOS does support mouse, advanced graphics, more features ++->uefi INSTALL fully unleashes potential of uefi bios, and man must run uefi bios in order to make uefi installation So are there, and if, what are real advantages / disadvantages of UEFI bios and then UEFI installation ? What is this secure boot, which uefi bioses support. Also what is this fuss about graphics cards supporting / not supporting secure boot etc.. ? Sorry for noob questions -> I tried searching web -> tons and tons of questions and speculative answers, but not real experience. I will be using Windows 8.1. Would you go for uefi / legacy install As for my storage (if this information were needed) =>256 GB SSD Primary Drive for OS =>2TB HDD storage for music, movies, data, I will never boot from it
  10. Why should it be terrible about their warranty / what's wrong with MSI ?
  11. PCS is not available in Slovakia at all. I would like to go with one of these, I have already spent too much time speculating, reading reviews and comparing different brands of gpus
  12. I am definitely going for 290x. Help me choose which: Gigabyte Windforce R929XWF3-⁴GD - 430 eur or MSI R9 Gaming 290X Gaming 4G - 395 eur Both are 1000mhz/1040 mhz boost clock/5000 mhz memory Both fit my case (Obsidian 450d) Msi has backplate, gigabyte doesn't 35 eur is no difference for me if gigabyte will be better. I am not going to overclock extremely, if at all. I want card that will run cooloer and quieter. My final words. No triX, no Vapor. MSI / Gigabyte, please share your thoughts.
  13. So it's 50:50 now between those cards Ok, now 1 more candidate Zotac 780ti - it's cheaper, it goes for 580€, while Asus is for 620€. Are there any differences between these two brands ? Both of them should be reference pcb design as well as reference cooler. So the question really is whether STOCK 780ti VS mildly overclocked GTX780 (Evga), and if the difference is worth extra 100 €. I am really thinking about R9 290X - it's only 400 euros for MSI R9 290x, but then i heard about their leaking fans, and I don't want to go extreme overclocking way. But I don't know why, I don't trust amd. Nvidia has shadowplay, physx, while on the other hand AMD has Mantle, which not many games utilize, but BF4 does, and new BF probbably will too. Let's say, that I am going to run them out of the box, no tuning right away. Which would you choose ? EVGA GTX780 SC ACX ZOTAC / ASUS GTX780TI - reference model MSI R9 290x These are my final three, and I need as much oppinions and arguments, as possible. I have really hard time deciding. Many thanks.
  14. Guys, I asked it multiple times in multiple forum sections, but I ask it again. Will 750 W PSU be enough in this setup http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ph6vqs ? (That are my build thoughts, until now, i was planning GTX780, but benchmarks and "freshness" of 290x makes me lean toward AMD. GTX780 is 1 year old card indeed) Or should I rather go with 850W or even more ? I want to it nice and steady, not hitting "red numbers".
  15. Gigabyte is also available at the shop where I am buying from. Twin Frozr seems super sweet spot for me, if their fans weren't leaking oil. But it's half year later, i hope that the shop has new batches, not those old leaking ones. Btw, still haven't found comparison between OC'ed Evga GTX780 ACX and that twin frozr r290x. But what I have red is, that there is not much room for overclocking on already hot 290x, and even on water cooling they don't overclock well. So i am looking for comparison between OCed GTX780 and stock 290x. Any help ?
  16. Huh, can you quote some source about this liquid ? Tri-X has ugly color scheme, whole card looks ugly, it's huge, more huge than blue whale. Vapour is so pricey - 550, that i would rather take 780ti from asus for 620. There are simple out of budget.
  17. So the Msi r9 290x gaming would be good decision ?Will the 750w psu be able to run that, or should i go for 850 or even moar ?
  18. Ok, looking at AMD cards, these two also fits 500 € budget. ASUS R9290X-DC2-4GD5 http://www.alza.sk/asus-r9290x-dc2-4gd5-d569251.htm and ASUS R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5 http://www.alza.sk/asus-r9290x-dc2oc-4gd5-d569246.htm Which are actually the same, except factory overclock on 10 € pricier OC edition. So GTX780 or R290X and if 290X - which one of proposed ? PS: what i Like about nvidia is Shadowplay, which should be easy on resource gameplay recording feature. Does amd has something like this ? Many thanks.
  19. So guys, which one of these ? EVGA GTX780 SC ACX http://www.alza.sk/evga-geforce-gtx780-superclocked-acx-d433041.htm MSI R9 290X Gaming 4G http://www.alza.sk/msi-r9-290x-gaming-4g-d519508.htm Looking at number - when running stock clocks, AMD is clear winner in performance and price. But what about OC'ed gtx780 compared to this AMD ? I am choosing between these two, as they match my future color scheme, but what's more important, they have simmilar pricing. Super-uber-ton-weighing lightning cards are more expensive than I am willing to spend on GPU, and look ugly IMHO. So ? I am not willing to save every extra cent on graphics card, but these hit limit of mine budget and I like them. Now i cannot decide which one to take, which will perform better. Mantle is not important for me - how many games do support it ? One, maybe two ? Neither g-sync, I have 3 months old FS2333, which I am not willing to change. Perfect size imho.
  20. Where are those people saying "buy R9 290X instead" ???
  21. From these, I would go with MSI. I don't have experience with another cards, but brother has this Twin Frozr GTX780 in his rig. At full load, card never goes beyond 81C (BF4, 1080p all maxed out). It's still super quiet. Sure, you can hear air moving through radiator, but no fan noise or whatsoever.
  22. Tri-X maybe, Vapor-X is 550 € in Slovakia, whereas Gtx780ti proposed by me is 620 €, and as I am Nvidia guy, i would probably take rather Gtx780ti. The question is, whether i really need it and what is actual performance differential between Overclocked EVGA Gtx780 SC ACX and R9 290x - let's say Msi Twin Frozr one, as this ones price almost match up with evga's price. What I really need is those ~60fps at ultra details at 1080p. And I won't buy card with "ok, i will upgrade it in half year to play latest games on this resolution on these details". I would like to have simply futureproof card. My brother already has overclocked GTX780 from MSI, which is actually a beast at every single game he has, except for watch dogs (which according to benchmarks is also able to "kill" Gtx780ti). So these are my concerns and games, that i will play - BF4, Gta V, upcoming battlefield etc..
  23. I woudln't way that I am short on budget, but I feel that 500 € for graphics card is already enough. So basically I need the best I can get for my money, and futureproof graphics card at this lcd screen. 1080p 60hz/fps I wasn't looking at Sapphire cards, as their cooler seems stock amd ones.
  24. I wanna go with brand new parts. Which of 290X ? MSI R9 290X Gaming 4G is good candidate ? Or should i take a look at another.
  25. Sure that it's possible. But are there any benefits running amd CPU along with AMD card, or doesn't it matter ? Btw, I am still more conviced into Nvidia and hope, that more people will join the discussion.
