MrugendraFale reacted to WindirBear in How do you secure your server from the internet?
Hey guys so I just bought a tiny qotom pc to run pfsense on since I've been running my webserver for  a year now with just Wordfence plugin protecting it. I wasn't able to afford to get a firewall and since I want to operate a nextcloud server now is a great time to learn some basic network security 😄

I don't know much about network security as there are many ways to attack a network but I've been watching network chuck and other videos and pfsense seems promising. That being said  I don't have remote ssh set up because I'm afraid of brute force attacks. Also my website is online store with practically no traction other than bots attacking my network, so security is important. I also have ip cameras set up for remote access and the firmware SUCKS, I can't change the username so it's stuck at admin, which is such a security risk. So....

Is this the a good way to secure my web server, local network, and nextcloud?
Do I need pfsense to secure my servers?
How do you guys secure your network?
Is it best to just run these services through a cloud service like linode?

    HI!
So I am having some rules issues with my pfSense and allowing Plex from my primary LAN to my IoT LAN while blocking all traffic to all private networks.
    Logs and Rules Below

I have tried rules in different positions, I have Plex set to notice different VLAN subnets as local, but I keep getting a connection refused  What gives? Thanks in advance!

I would advise looking at using a hypervisor as your base and running applications in VMs. Makes it much easier to tear down a system and build it back without affecting everything else, or just being able to delete a VM when it's no longer needed, reboot a VM without losing access to shares etc.

Proxmox is a good option, but TrueNAS, unRaid and various other options are available. Proxmox and TrueNAS are free so I'd recommend installing them and giving them a go first to see which you like. unRaid has a free trial, but the full product requires a paid license, though it's not particularly expensive. Windows Server is another option which is worth considering, especially if you're already familiar with Windows in general. For the most part you can run Windows server unactivated without any problems, you just can't use the personalisation options.

I personally use Windows Server running HyperV as my base hypervisor and then have various VMs running applications and such.

    Hi guys !

I'm not sure if it was the good section to post it but here's my problem :

I wanted to create a server for multi-purpose things since a long time ago, and, the last LTT video about this told me to finally do it. I grabbed a old PC, bought 2 4Tb HDD for RAID 1 (encrypted) and a SSD to put the OS and other stuff running on this.

What do I mean by multi-purpose ? Mostly saving my data & backups, streaming video, making small game servers and, in the future, I was thinking about using it with a home assistant.

The problem is that I don't know if I've done a good choice. Right now, I've set Pop_OS! on it and I was thinking about using Mamba to do the NAS part. But it feels kinda dirty, especially because I want to be accessing those files from the internet and/or my phone if I need to. I thought about using a private RSA key to have a secure and automatic login and connection without the risk of using a password, but it seems that Mamba isn't really made for it.

So I'm turning to you guys :

What is the best way to make a multi-purpose server ? Should I keep Pop_OS! and try my best to make it work ? Should I go with True-NAS instead ? But if so, how can I use it for multimedia purposes or simply running a server such as Minecraft or VTT ?

So I have an ASUS TUF x570 and recently ran out of USB ports for my devices. 6 Ports in total.
    3 peripherals
    1 Mic
    1 Soundbar
    1 Headset Stand
    1 Headset USB Dongle

Now my headset stand has USB ports in it. My 3 peripherals are razer products synced together with my corsair fans and RAM. So I'd rather not put one of these in my headset stand for a chance to them become not synced correctly.
Can I take my headset USB dongle out my motherboard and use it from my headset stand?
If I can will this change the audio quality even with the EQ settings I have set?
or can I put my mic in it can and it not change it sound quality either?

MrugendraFale reacted to QChoumont in looking for wireless audio solution for aging relative.
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good wireless headphone or earbud solution for watching tv. They've tried an avantree audicast plus which in theory is a solid solution but it doesn't reliably pair with their Bluetooth headphones.

Their tv also has Bluetooth built-in but it doesn't automatically pair to the headphone so they have to navigate the menus everytime they turn on the tv and they can't do that

So what I'm looking for is the most dead simple to use toslink to Bluetooth/wireless transmitter, something that is basically set and forget.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't think anyone here uses Kontrons do they?

Sometimes the network takes longer to initalize than the system does to boot, so steam doesn't see storage, and you need to restart steam.

    Sometimes you get network issues.

I see it as a no gain, but more annoyances and setup.

And non steam games don't like smb often, so you need to use iscsi.

Yeah, I'd probably just check if it will install first before making any investments there. IIS 10 can be installed on Windows 10. Sometimes the requirement for "Windows Server" just means "a server running windows", with the assumption that it has high performance network and hard drives, and redundancy.

Series X is dominating in almost every field when considered against ps5 but only if it could compete Ps5 for its AAA exclusive Titles. The bait sure is heavy but we still adore what Xbox is capable of for its hardware and quick resume feature. SSD sure does work like magic but Xbox has made it a lot more interesting by letting games load instantly with direct resume and reducing loading time limit tremendously. Well if you want my answer on which one is better ill say interms of hardware Xbox series X and for games Ill go with Ps5 not to underestimate Xbox for its Halo, Forza and Gears of war __________________________________ Your Side ?

MrugendraFale reacted to PineyCreek in What’s the difference between RJ 45 and SFP+ ?
SFP+, specifically, is 10G, though some transceivers are dual-rate and can do 1G or 10G depending on your configuration.  SFP by itself will be a 1G transceiver.  They can be fiber or copper, though I would say the large majority of SFP+ transceivers will be fiber.  SFP and SFP+ are used in network gear that support them and are made for modularity and to avoid the limitations of having a fixed configuration in network gear.  The downside to having any modular network gear however is that you have to buy the transceivers for what you're doing, and those cost a bit on top of the gear.  That is the price you pay for the extra option of choice over a fixed configuration (like having just RJ45 connections).

Note:  If you're thinking about buying a transceiver for an SFP or SFP+ slot, make sure you're getting the right thing.  There's a number of factors to consider like single mode vs multimode (affects distance the light can travel...also price), compatible fiber types, and also what your network hardware can actually use.

In most network devices from high end switches, over low end routers, consoles, PCs and even some smart light bulbs   you‘ll find  RJ45
but on some stuff you’ll find SFP+

    RJ45

to me these two network cards look almost the same besides the connector

    so

what does SFP+ have that RJ45 does not?
    and
where and why is SFP+ mainly used?

I don’t know but could it be that SFP+ also supports optical cables?

Hey guys, since this subforum is the closest we've got to a generic "IT Admin" subforum, I think this is the best place for it.

I'm in need of recommendations for IT Asset Management software - both for Software (particularly tracking license keys and assigned device), and Hardware (mostly computers, tablets, servers, network equipment, etc).

I *DO NOT* care about network scanning. In my experience you always miss stuff and then need to manually add/check everything anyway. If there's a client agent for Windows, that's a good bonus.

We have Spiceworks Helpdesk and may use their ITAM system, but would like to hear from others that have actually used different ITAM systems, and what they like.

Budget wise, low cost or free is ideal, but if it's a game changer, anything is possible.

MrugendraFale reacted to NickDiMaria in HDD Weird Behavior... Is it my power supply?
Hey guys, this is my first time posting on a forum or anything like that for help so I hope I don't mess this up.

I have a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive that I purchased from OutletPC in January of 2019. In November 2019   I started to notice odd behavior so I RMA'd and got a refurbished drive which also did not work. I thought it was Seagate's fault so I asked for a new drive which they sent me.

I have had that new drive since November of 2019 and I am again experiencing odd issues. These issues include the following:
Hard drive going undetected on boot (only sometimes) Requires a restart and drive shows up Some weird noises only after the drive has been running for a little while Some games freeze up that are installed on the HDD I am now wondering if the drive is dead again, which I would find to be weird since this the third HDD in my system, or if there is something wrong with my system.

My system specs are as follows:
MSI Z370 SLI PLUS motherboard i5-8600k MSI 1070 TI Gaming 2x512 GB Sata M.2 SSD 2X8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM Corsair 550 Watt Power Supply I also do have a Commander Pro with 6 fans and a couple LED strips for my case plugged into stored in the hard drive bay, right below the 2TB HDD.

Any ideas you guys have on this problem would be greatly appreciated.

In a domain, it is pretty easy to manage a Hyper-V server. I add it to the Hyper-V manager, and that's it. However, when the two machines are in a workgroup, how do I do this? I just installed Hyper-V server 2019 on a server I own, and on my desktop machine, running Windows 10, I cannot add the Hyper-V server to the Server Manager, or to Hyper-V manager. When adding it to Server Manager, I get a "WinRM Negotiate authentication error" error, and when I add it to Hyper-V Manager, I get the error below:
I am guessing that there are some extra steps for managing servers in workgroups? I've never done this before, if anyone knows about this, please let me know.
