  1. Well, I ended up going with unraid instead. Looks great and was easy to set up so far, just transferring files and then doing parity set up! Figured this is a good starting point until my current storage fills up then might look at other solutions at that point
  2. I am looking for some advice on the best route to go for setting up a ZFS raid pool. I am setting this up within Proxmox. I have 3x12tb Seagate Exos X12 drives that I will be installing. This will primarily store media for my Plex Server. I have a separate 500gb SSD already installed that will host VMs and containers. I have never used RAID of any kind and have always just done JBOD in the past, not knowing any better. I want to set this new server up the right way to ensure I am good to go for quite a while. I was considering using raidz1, but many have advised me against it since another drive would be likely to fail in the process of recovery. However, I can't really afford (storage wise) to go with raidz2. I am upgrading from an 8tb media drive in my Windows system, and raidz2 would really only leave me with 10tb which isn't what I want to achieve. Will I be fine with raidz1 or should I consider getting another drive to increase total usable space and utilize raidz2?
  3. Thanks for the replies, I'll check out unraid a little bit more. Seems like that may be more suited for me since I'll mostly just be using this as a media box as @jarsky said
  4. I am going to be setting up my first server this week and am seeking some guidance. I'm new to all of this and still trying to learn, but feel like I have a decent grasp on some things. System specs: Thinkstation P520 Xeon W-2123 (3.6GHz 4 core) 512GB SSD 16GB DDR4 ECC registered ram Quadro P2000 5GB I will be adding in four HDDs (one 8tb transferring from my current build and three 12TB). From what I've been reading, I feel like I want to do Proxmox. Seems fairly simple overall, just might need some guidance. Definitely unsure of the best way to setup my storage array. Someone recommended unraid to me, but still not what to do for the overall OS. Here are some things I'm looking to accomplish: Plex - usually no more than 2-3 simultaneous 1080p transcodes, obviously utilizing the P2000 card for this Sonarr/Radarr/NZBHydra/NZBget - automated downloads and library management Qbittorrent/VPN - I was thinking of two instances of this, one for private trackers with no VPN and another for public trackers through VPN with killswitch (using PIA). But if that sounds too complicated I can just run one using VPN for everything NAS - movies, tv shows, music, documents, and photos So here's a list of the few questions I have: 1) How should I set up storage? I've carelessly setup storage on my current gaming PC where I've just added each drive as needed and never bothered with RAID or anything. 2) How do I know when to set something up in a container vs setting up as a VM? 3) How much ram will I ideally need long term? It can take up to 256GB, but 16GB should be good to get me started right? 4) Best way to migrate my Plex and storage from current system to this one? My 8TB drive currently has all my video files. Plex is currently installed off of one of my SSDs. 5) I'd also like to be able to access some of these tools remotely, mainly my Plex automation stuff. How do I go about doing that via Proxmox?
  5. Likely a max of 5 streams at any given time, like 2 maybe 3 being transcode. 1080p content only of course, no 4K transcode
  6. I am adding some 12tb drives to my set up and want to move away from using my gaming PC and have a dedicated build. I already have an 8tb drive that is almost entirely filled up. Here are some applications I will be using: Plex, Sonnar, Radarr, SabNZBD, Tautulli, qbittrorent I'm stuck between building my own machine or going with a server setup instead. I'm currently in school for IT so I will likely dive into other programs and playing around in the future, so a server could be nice for future use. Could really use some guidance and advice on which direction to go overall. And if I build my own, what would be a good recommended processor for using plex?
