Thought I was signing up for an account, but was actually signing back in to an account I made 3.5 years ago.
I will likely be moving away from home and I want to create a multimedia and remote backup server for me to access from interstate. While I've been at home, my storage system works as follows:
- 1TB primary NVME, two partitions (one for OS, one for games
- 1TB HDD for long term games storage
- 2TB main drive for my photography files (raw files, PSDs, TIFFs etc)
- 2TB backup #1 of photo drive
- 1TB backup #2 of photo drive
In particular with reference to my photography drives, they are all in my home. Not quite following the 321 rule but it's worked for me thus far and our house/street is pretty safe. I will first discuss my needs for a remote backup server, and then I will go into the multimedia side of things. Before those, I must outline the hardware I'm working with.
This server/config/whatever is (obviously) not going to be my primary machine (what I'm taking with my interstate). My dad built a crypto rig 2 years ago and since the crash it's been sitting fairly dormant. Specs are as follows:
- MSI Z390 Plus LGA 1151 ATX Motherboard
- Asus GeForce RTX 3070 KO Gaming 8G OC
- Corsair HX1200
- Intel Core i5 9400F 6 Core LGA1151 2.9GHz
- Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) LPX Vengeance (non RGB)
- WD 240G Green M.2 SSD (SATA)
- Windows 11
For photo, I would like to be able to upload to the computer from afar and do some basic file management. This got me thinking about a NAS as opposed to using internal hardware, but hopefully you can provide some insight there. I was perhaps thinking about an M.2 carrier card to put into the second PCIe slot, but I think best practice suggests just using typical NAS HDDs. I'd be looking to have a minimum of 2TB redundant (so 4TB total), but might go higher if I feel like it.
For multimedia, my dad has an external hard drive with a bunch of ripped movies and TV shows that I'm worried might data rot or otherwise break if not backed up. First thing that popped to mind was something like Plex or Jellyfin. Which would be good so that I, or anyone else, can access the shows and watch them whenever they want.
So that's basically all I think I can mention. Let me know if there's anything I've missed or anything that needs clarifying. One more thing I'll note is that this will be dad's PC, which he doesn't do anything heavy on, but he would not be happy if I switched the system to Linux, so Windows solutions are what I'm looking for!
Thank you in advance for your time and generosity.
