  1. Okay, quick status update on this: I left my computer on overnight and it apparently did eventually boot into Windows normally! But the network driver isn't running for some reason, among others... Opened msconfig to try rebooting, and sure enough, it takes about 15-30 minutes to boot into Windows for some reason. What could be causing this? And is there a way to troubleshoot it? I doubt that adding drivers to the boot process would make it go any faster, so clearly there's some sort of core Windows driver issue that makes booting take ages.
  2. Just did this, but it turns out the issue must've started once I kept selecting "Selective startup" in msconfig, which was literally preventing Safe Mode from even including the networking driver. We're all good on that front right now. Still not able to boot into regular Win10 yet. Really hoping I don't have to fresh reinstall; my workflow is highly sensitive to changes like an OS reinstall.
  3. The upsetting part is that I made sure to research this exact point, and people mostly said that in the year 2019 there should be no major issues with "transplanting" a Win10 install between Intel and AMD systems. ? Although I don't think this would explain how I can boot into Safe Mode properly - if there were stability issues, wouldn't that not even work?
  4. Hi all, Just finished my new build, going from an i5-3570K on a Gigabyte mobo to a R7 3700X on an MSI mobo. From my cursory research online, it seemed there wouldn't be too many issues with just plugging in my existing Windows 10 system SSD and booting, but it seems a driver is causing some issues. Automatic Repair spit out the following, found in Safe Mode: "A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting." Error code 0x490 I've tried a variety of things, including booting with all startup services disabled; no dice, same spinning animation loop. I tried unplugging everything but the monitor (including mouse + keyboard), still nothing. Finally, I wanted to go into Safe Mode + Networking to at least download the AMD/MSI drivers and ensure my NVIDIA drivers were up-to-date, but then the Networking in Safe Mode disappeared too, even after reboots! Now I'm simply stumped. OS: Win10 64-bit CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X MB: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16 (3200 MHz) GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 SC Gaming (6 GB) PSU: EVGA 600B1 (600W) Any help on this Friday night would be greatly appreciated!
  5. This is something I saw someone say on a Reddit thread about this, so I'm definitely inclined to go with Prism now. That's what I was thinking too. Thanks for the input everyone! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
  6. Title says it all. Got my components and I'm about to do the upgrade from an i5-3570K system to a R7 3700X system, but I'm not sure which cooler to go with. People seem to like the Wraith Prism well enough, and chances are I won't be doing any sort of overly aggressive OCing if at all. The Cooler Master online store has been "closed" for a few weeks now, so I'm getting a bit antsy and want to just install the Wraith Prism, but if my Hyper 212 Evo will yield significantly better thermals, I would opt for that. Any opinions one way or the other? Hyper 212 Evo vs. Wraith Prism on a 3700X?
  7. I appreciate the input. My music production workflow necessitates a fair amount of RAM, actually, and with any sort of multitasking including Chrome I'm already bumping up against 16 GB as-is, hence my desire to upgrade to 32. Hell, at idle after startup I'm sitting around 33% RAM usage doing nothing, just from background processes and whatnot, let alone any sort of sample library based virtual instruments in FL Studio like NI Kontakt etc.
  8. Hi all, Sorry to keep bumping the thread but I have a new RAM choice after some thorough research. Corsair LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4 DRAM Memory Kit, Black (CMK32GX4M2B3200C16) https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B016ORTNI2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 3200 @ CL16, Samsung dies, on the QVL for the MSI B450 Tomahawk Max, and no unnecessary RGB. Seems good, can anyone confirm I'm not missing some huge red flag here?
  9. Sorry, I updated the link to a new kit after finding that one wouldn't be compatible. This kit gets a 10, so I think I'll actually go with this one: G.SKILL 32GB (2 x 16GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0171GQR0C
  10. Alright everyone, I think I'm ready to pull the trigger on the following: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SXMZLPK MSI B450 Tomahawk Max https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WF6ZQST Now, the question of RAM comes back... I really don't need RGB (tower sits below my desk on the ground) so unless an RGB kit is somehow better value than non-RGB, I'd like to avoid paying extra for something I don't need or want. How does this kit fare? G.SKILL 32GB (2 x 16GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0171GQR0C
  11. Just did a little research and it seems the B450 is probably my best bet - I don't really need the advantages of X570.
  12. Ah, I'm not in the market for a new GPU at the moment. Sticking with my GTX 1060 for now, just looking to upgrade CPU, mobo, and RAM. That's the second recommendation for CL16 RAM - seems like that's a winner around here. Will take a closer look.
  13. Perfect, this is the type of insight I was looking for. Definitely leaning towards the 3700X now, especially after seeing that it somehow outperforms the 3900X in some of LTT's tests...? Strange. Ultimately, doesn't seem like the 3900X is worth the extra ~$200 over the 3700X. Interesting, I'll check those out. Looking to keep mobo price at or below $200 I think.
  14. Do you mean that AMD is more future-proof than Intel when it comes to CPU-only upgrades (without having to buy a whole new mobo)? If so, I wholeheartedly agree; that's one of the reasons I want to switch. My LGA 1155 CPU was obsolete the next year, and I was SOL for any sort of upgrade without buying a whole new mobo just for the socket ?
  15. Yeah, RAM timing is something I know basically nothing about, so I was hoping to get some advice on that front Thanks! As for the CPU: I mostly just play CS:GO (and do want to handle PCVR via Oculus Link to my Quest, with games like Half-Life: Alyx, Boneworks, etc.) but I'm looking for a CPU that can fill that as well as music production in FL Studio, which is my main line of work. Like I mentioned, I'm interested in "future-proofing" as much as possible, but the 3950X is way out of my budget; do you think the 3700X is better value than the 3900X? Thanks again for your advice!
