I had a netbook with some slow 60gb 1,8" zif-harddisk and I tried to replace it with something bigger and faster. I ended up buying a cheap 128gb msata ssd and additionaly an adapter zif2msata for less than $20 in total.

Sir0Tek reacted to WereCatf in We bought a $20 SSD…
I would. I've actually bought a few random, low-end Chinese SSDs with weird brand-names. I use more reliable brands for my desktop and such, but the cheap ones are great for all sorts of projects, as scratch-disks, for portable drives and so on, ie. stuff where long-term reliability isn't that important. That said, none of them have exhibited any unwanted behaviour, let alone failed, yet, so even reliability doesn't actually seem as bad as one might think, in my experience.

mehh.. randoms still wont be nearly fast enough to make a big dent in hard drive deployment for most use cases.

I did wrote that you should look for 2nd hand first if on a budget, didn't I? Getting a decent I7 used at +-250 isn't that difficult, especially if there's no graphics card installed. That would give sufficient room for a better gpu, like for example the 5600XT. Or go up to +-500,- and get a better graphics card as well.

Jsyk gold, platinum, and titanium are efficiency ratings, it rates the amount of power that is lost throughout the time its running.

longer warranty’s and modularity have nothing to do with the rating, that’s all up to the manufacture

Sir0Tek got a reaction from BarackOBatman in GTX 1650 Super with Core i3-2100
This will mean a massive improvement in gaming, the GT710 can't even compete with, for example, the Ryzen 2200g igp, while on the other hand the gtx 1650s is quite a recent mid-level gaming card, more or less on par with the rx580.

Vast improvement. Hence, even an old gtx 750Ti or HD 7790 does blow the gt710 into oblivion.
Of course, your cpu will then become the weakest link in your system but do you think it will be necessary to upgrade it as well? It's a dual-core with hyperthreading at 3.1ghz stock, plus turbo. What board do you have?

The drop could have cracked solder joints under the chips too, and that's impossible to see. Will be impossible to know without actually trying it.

    Motherboard: ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($69.50 @ Vuugo)

Storage: Western Digital Blue SN550 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  ($84.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Seagate BarraCuda 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($52.95 @ Vuugo)

The mainboard will need bios v3.30 in order to support the 3400g.

Sure, a Ryzen 2600 and the gtx 1060 would be better for gaming but it will also inflate the price, and I have serious doubts that there'll be a noticable improvement over the 3400g setup considering the tasks listed.
You may check the 3400g out, I think it's a very convenient apu for the setup.
I've added a conventional harddisk for data-storage but it might not be necessary at all, saving another +-CAD 50,-
Don't you need a nice compact case and psu as well?

I'd probably drop that GPU in that particular build. I believe the integrated gpu is on par with the 1030.

What kind of gaming is done on the computer that requires a dedicated GPU?

Sir0Tek got a reaction from NickB278 in Pc running way below expectations
You may check the influence of 128-bit on your config by just removing the existing 8gb one. Having 8gb only for this test should work, so you can see how much of an impact just this simple trick has on your cpu performance.
Memory speed itself is also somewhat important, the 9600K, albeit already upping the clock up to 4.6ghz on stock, does support ddr4 2666 and even profits from ddr4 3000. OC of the cpu itself may add 500mhz, about 10%. The question then is, does it make sense to spend money on a z-mainboard for another +-$100 or invest the same amount into upgrading the cpu into one already running at up to 4.9ghz?

Sir0Tek reacted to Fasauceome in 3900x vs 9900K for gaming
The 3900X is not so good for gaming, in terms of value. A ryzen 7 3700X would deliver the same experience, and you'd get the same upgrade path going forward.

Sir0Tek reacted to RadiatingLight in 3900x vs 9900K for gaming
Technically, the 9900K is better (especially 9900KS or 9900KF, KS will boost higher, and KF will likely have higher OC headroom)
However, unless you're playing at higher than 144Hz, this will not make an appreciable difference. Getting 185 vs 175 FPS doesn't matter unless you have a 240Hz+ Monitor.
1440p gaming is likely going to be limited by your GPU anyway. I'd recommend you get a 3700X, and then upgrade in the future if you ever need more performance.

    @boey
Cheapest option you have is to just use the Alienware psu. O.k., it is 2-3 years old and you don't see a branding/rating. That doesn't say it is bad. It is most likely an oem-psu and there must be some information on the sticker so you can determine what it really is.
Usually you can trust Dell to use hardware that lasts some time. They're not interested in getting much rma due to failing hardware.

No, not all devices that came with Win7 are able to upgrade into Win10 (issues and/or unusable, extremely sluggish) or would satisfyingly run Linux on it. Yes, they're old, yes they use some special hardware (Thanks, Intel...) but technically they could still be used.
