Tomahok's Achievements

  1. I would get two ram sticks for dual channel ram. Also, I usually like to avoid usb wireless adopters when possible, I have better luck with pcie ones. Finally I would go with a higher quality fully modular psu, this is the last place to skimp out on. I didn't do this with my first build and I came to regret it. Something like a EVGA 550 G3 is a good choice, it will be quieter than the corsair, fully modular, and much cleaner and more efficient power. It is $15 well spent. Anything on the tier 1 list of the Tom's hardware psu list should be good too. https://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16817438095
  2. Just thought you guys might find my custom designed computer case interesting. I am not sure if this is the right place for this stuff, but I can move it if necessary. If you have an comments or questions feel free to leave them here. I had a lot of fun throughout the project and may make a build log when I start my build inside of it. I would encourage others to design their own cases, just be prepared for the time commitment and you will likely need about 3 times as much material as needed to make one case, as mistakes will be made (Even my final version is far from perfect). If you are interested in making The case was made out of 1/5" plywood and 1/8" acryllic panels, cut on a laser cutter and held together with 4-40 screws and nuts. Specs of case: Horizontal Micro ATX Motherboard Two 360mm radiators in basement (Lots of room, could do push pull on super thick rads) Two 120mm fans on top 14.5x17.25x12.5 Supports Two HDD (Will just place hdd cage in bottom) and unlimited ssds (Will just hang loose, I am lazy) Supports 120mm pump mount (Basement has 120mm fan holes) Switch mounted on desk for clean ascetic and then I did not have to buy an ugly front io set Problems I encountered (Look out if you want to do something similar): Plywood panels were too thick for regular computer screws, had to countersink I made lots of simple mistakes, ended up using about 3 or 4 times as much material as expected Huge issue finding rear io information, all other specifics were on formfactors.org Correct spacing from rear panel to first motherboard mounting point (To allow for expansion card metal bar thingy) Bottom panel is only secured by screws, not the other panels, meaning you have to pick it up by the bottom solely, otherwise it will slip out. Should have moved the bottom panel up just a little bit, that way the front and back panels would wrap all the way around the bottom panel's prongs, instead of just on three sides. So here is a video of the case, feel free to skip around: Some Pics:
  3. Great. I think I will get the Mayhems Pastel Blue Concentrate!
  4. I had not even thought of this, thanks for pointing it out. So would picking a Mayhems Concentrate be better than a dye? Edit: Added hyperlinks
  5. Not sure if this is the place for something like this, but here it goes. I am designing a custom micro atx case and will want to fill it with all of the water cooling goodness it is designed for. I have never water cooled before, but have seriously looked 4 or 5 times in the last 3 years (Full parts lists down to every fitting). I have been getting more and more ambitious every time and this is what I have decided on: Rigid PETG tubing (Never bended before, but I am pretty handy, how hard could it be?), blue coolant (With dyes, otherwise just distilled water and PT Nuke), and white fittings. I will be cooling a reference 1070 and i5 4670k on a Asus Gryphon Z87 with white armor Here is the parts list: Fittings Primochill Rigid Revolver White 10 Pack 3/8 x 1/2- $65 Swiftech Soft Compression 3/8 x 1/2- $24 2 Barrow Pass Through - $15.2 Drain System T Fitting - $5 Alphacool Coupling - $3 XSPC Ball Valve - $8 XSPC Plug - $1.5 Tubing Primochill 3/8x1/2 PETG 12 Pack - $30 10 Primoflex Advanced LRT (For basement of case) - $27 Additives Mayhems Non Stain Blue Dye - $9 PT Nuke- $8 Radiator XSPC EX 360 White - $60 Pump Swiftech MCP655 with top - $90 Blocks Supremacy Evo - $78 EKWB FC 1070 Nickel (1070) - $125 Backplate - $35 Tools Funnel - $6.25 XSPC Bending Kit - $16 Is this any good? I already own a quality heat gun Reservoir Phabya Balancer 250 Matte Black - $39 Total: 639.95 I will be using my current fans, Noiseblocker B12-2s I attached a screenshot of the case, it is not complete yet, but it is getting there. Let me know what you think! All help is welcome!:thumb:
  6. Let me start off by saying that there have been similar discussions on the site, but, I am still confused on what to pick. I was really set on getting the AMH A409U, but then I stumbled upon the Wasabi Mango UHD 400 on both amazon and ebay (I provided the Amazon link since I would prefer to buy from them). From what I can gather, the Wasabi is a better screen, since it supports freesync, while being cheaper since I will not have to pay shipping. However, I just want to make sure I am not making a mistake by picking it over the AMH. I saw the review of the Wasabi Mango UHD 420 by TekSyndicate, but am unsure if the pros/cons in the video also apply to this monitor. Overall, I am asking if there are any drawbacks to the Wasabi that I should be aware of, since it seems like a better monitor while being cheaper. Also, are the UHD420 (That teksyndicate reviewed) and the UHD400 identical except for the 2" screen size difference? Finally, does the UHD400 support 120hz at 1080p like the UHD420? Links in case hyperlinks do not work: UHD400: https://www.amazon.com/WASABI-MANGO-UHD400-40-Inch-Monitor/dp/B01CSC2P0K AMH A409U: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Perfect-AMH-A409U-40-UHD-3840X2160-DP1-2-HDMI2-0-Real-4K-LED-Monitor-Remote-/322022769271?hash=item4afa0d8277:g:4jIAAOSwnNBXUUlj#rwid UHD420 Review: Edit: Just read something about the UHD400 flickering, anyone have experience with this? Both monitors claim to be flicker free, but I tend not to trust the manufacturer.
  7. Copied from my post here: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2997494/lenovo-e460-lenovo-t420.html I am looking for a new laptop and I think I have narrowed it down to these two options: Lenovo Thinkpad E460 with i3-61000U, 1920x1080 IPS, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD (Only since I could cheaply replace it with a 850 evo) - Normally $512, but I can get it for $400 through work deals and a total of $500 with an aftermarket ssd.http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/e-series/... Lenovo Thinkpad T420 with i5 2520M, 1600x900 (Have to watch out for the lower res 768p screens, they are everywhere), 8GB Ram (May have to add myself, no big deal), 250gb SSD (Added by me) with whatever storage comes with the used model I buy (Just to keep windows on it) - $300 with everything included with awesome part support (One big reason I like this laptop, cheap replacement keyboards and screens, and the ultra bay support for stuff like extra battery and storage - smallest laptop I have seen that can fit three drives)But, just in case there are more suggestions you guys have, I filled out the questions on the sticky:1. What is your budget? Under $6002. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? 13-14 inches, around an inch in thickness (Thinner is better)3. What screen resolution do you want? At least 1600x900, IPS would be nice if possible4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? Somewhat portable, but my backpack is pretty big so it is not a huge concern. A 17.3" laptop will not fit, a 15.6" barely fit, and a 14" fits nicely. The thickness must be under 1.5" to fit, but it does not need to be super thin.5. How much battery life do you need? Around 4-5 hours of desktop real world use, it may be lower if I can just carry other, easily replaceable batteries.6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? Yes, but just old games like Masters of Orion, not a huge demand, integrated graphics should be fine. If possible, I would like to be able to play games like Fallout New Vegas on lower settings, but this takes lower priority to more productive tasks.7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) I can definitely foresee using gimp (Paint.net that also works on linux), but this program is not too demanding. If it does not cost too much extra, video editing on light works would be a nice touch.8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need? Around 250gb, but fast storage is more important, also I would like to have a replaceable drive. Any laptops that support two drives would be awesome (Ex: A msata ssd and a 2.5" hdd). If it is a hdd, 7200rpm would be really awesome.9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.Do not really care, at least somewhat reputable.10. How long do you want to keep your laptop? Around 4-5 years, durability is important.11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?Do not really need one, but if it is replacable with a 2.5" drive adapter or an extended battery (Like the T420) would be nice.12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. I have never owned a Lenovo thinkpad, but I have had extensive use with them and their keyboards and build quality always impress them.13. What country do you live in? The USA14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.Keyboard is number one priority, I am a keyboard freak and any laptop with a bad keyboard is a no go, this laptop will be mostly for typing documents and writing in java. I can get used to somewhat different layouts and back lighting does not matter at all, but I like a good travel distance and very little to no flexing in the laptop (Under normal circumstances). I will most certainly be using linux on whatever laptop I get, once again two drives would be nice so I can keep the windows install and add another drive to put linux on. I am not afraid of replacing drives or memory on a laptop to save even just a few bucks (It is fun!), as long as it is not terribly difficult.I am always a fan of a computer that is relatively easy to fix and maintain, such as a easily removable and cheap keyboard replacements (T420), socketted cpus and ram. Thanks for any help and suggestions. I may be a little slow to reply during the day due to commitments. If you know anything about the comparison between the E series and T series regarding the overall build quality, keyboard quality, expand ability, please add. I have read through much of the thinkpad wiki recently, but there is still much to learn.
  8. Wow, this UV tubing looks spectacular. What UV lights are you using? What is that you are using for a drain valve? I am planning to water cool my rig and that is one item I have not settled on yet.
  9. Thanks for appreciating. I figure if I want help from others I should give as much info as possible as they are doing free work for me . These kind of problems are extremely frustrating for me because I only get them on my own rig, despite having built 6 or so other computers for family members and they have no major problems (Trust me, they let me know EVERY problem they have).
  10. I will try plugging it into a laptop with display port when it happens again as it does not happen often enough for me to get fast results. I just recently underclocked my r9 280x to 1000/1500 ( Very Stable at 1150/1650). Thanks for mentioning the part about flash, I did not think of that and will try that now.
  11. Here is a picture of what my monitor looks like when the issue occurs: I have had this issue three times over the last two times. Every time it happened while chrome was open. I already updated my gpu drivers and turned off gpu acceleration in chrome. I have been playing lots of the witcher 2 and did not have this issue while in game, so it does not seem to be due to high temps. Suspected culprits: -Main monitor, the ASUS VG248qe which is known to have problems (My first one was bad and had half the panel in white and black horizontal lines, I rma'd it) -GPU, a Sapphire r9 280x toxic (No overclock, first one also rma'd, this is my second) -Windows 10 What it is not: -Displayport cable (Also happens over HDMI) Here is what I know so far: -Restarting fixes the issue for a while, the issue does not occur in the bios or when selecting an os (I have dual boot) -It has not happened in any program other than chrome, even while playing game and being 70C. -Switching the monitor to hdmi when the issue occurs (It is normally displayport), the issue still occurs, but switching it back to display port seems to fix the issue, but I have only tried this once -The menus on the monitor look normal when the issue occurs. -If I capture the screen when the issue occurs with open broadcastor, the screen looks normal. What I plan to try next: -When the issue occurs, plug it in via hdmi to my xbox and see if the issue still occurs PLEASE HELP, any thoughts you have please leave them below. My monitor and gpu should still be under warranty, I just have to know which it is. 12. Why does your video have to be so good, just when I was feeling good about my video you post this?!?!? Seriously though, nice video. I tried to do something kinda sorta similar with a rap and similar background music to yours, but it came out terribly so I went with something completely different. Love the Zoidberg, I was looking to be him for Halloween one year (Huge Futurama fan, watch all episodes in the matter of three weeks ).
  13. Here is my video, How a TechQuickie is Made, complete with hand painted LMG team figurines. I had to redo the video twice due to a poor choice in editing software, which led to only low resolution options when publishing  . I may or may not be sending those hand painted models to the front door of LMG , is that even allowed???
  14. I have been looking at water cooling my cpu and gpu in my Corsair Air 540. I not only am looking to do a color scheme, but also a theme that is related to a game or movie.Even if this seems pointless, it sounds like a fun challenge to an enthusiast like me. At first, I was looking at doing a white and black or white and blue themed computer, which would be pretty simple. But now, I am trying to tie it in to a game or movie (Such as Lord of the Rings or star wars). I am still looking at doing a color scheme to keep everything matching pretty well. I would like to avoid black if all possible, because I like brighter builds (Not afraid of bright colors like yellow and pink!) and I think black has been used too much. A few examples of what I want are black and yellow for Metro: Last Light, Red and black/gunmetal gray for The Witcher, and white and black for star wars storm troopers (Didn't actually think of this one, see it here, you must scroll down the page:http://www.overclock.net/t/1404897/official-corsair-car...) I have seen a lot of star wars build and even a cool fallout build (http://www.overclock.net/t/1503583/build-log-completed-...), but have been leaning towards doing a lord of the rings build since I haven't seen any one who has done it and I really like the movie/book. One thing I though of was doing a Gondor theme, with the tree of Gondor on the case side panel (Non window one), but can't think of anything else to do for it. Sorry for being so demanding and specific, but wanted to see what ideas you could come up with. If I use your idea, I will give you credit (Unless you don't want it) if I post a video or build log on it. WARNING the whole theme will not come together all at once, I will start with the water cooling and general color theme and move on to the details later. I put this in water cooling since this is a place where many people have probably already attempted or though about something like this. If you think it will be better in another section please tell me.
  15. My computer has been showing a blue screen again. It doesn't appear to be tied to loads since it has happened when just browsing the internet. I already checked my ram and ssd. I used bluescreenview to evaluate the minidump files that caused were shown as fatal errors. All of the shut downs are caused by the driver win32.sys.
