I'm planning on building a low power NAS with unraid. Probably going to use 6 drives + cache at start, but may expand more. I would like to hear some thoughts from people.
There's a slight problem with finding a proper case, I'd prefer small, but it has to have room for 8+ 3.5" HDD's for future proofing the setup a little. I don't need hot swap.
...and then the elephant in the room. SAS/Raid Card. I've never had to even consider one before. What works, is reasonably priced and do I need more than 1 for example 8 to 10 drives?
The drives will be 2-3TB WD Reds or similar.
Also should I use 2 parity drives with 6 + cache config or is 1 enough? Would someone explain me how the parity drives work too?
I don't know the perfect MOBO, CPU, RAM, PSU combo yet, but that I can figure out by myself. Thinking of using 16 gigs of non-ecc with some basic pentium or equal CPU for low power usage. My house is 1 gigabit equipped so I don't need any 10 gig bullet fast ethernet card for this build. It's gonna be storage for photos, videos and Time Machine backup solution.
