  1. thanks for the reply, unfortunately, without a working display, it's difficult to be certain of anything i'm at the point that i think i need to reflash the BIOS with original setting and the HP support isn't helping i appreciate that this isn't HP support, they haven't helped at all so far because i'm out of warranty just looking for someone to point me in the right direction for creating a bootable USB for recovering the BIOS the reason i'm looking for that direction is the HP instructions don't match what's happening the exe i downloaded doesn't ever display the option they describe it never shows me this screen
  2. this is what i did when i enabled the onboard, now, i have no display whatsoever this model has a reset button for the BIOS, you hold it for 5 sec with the unit unplugged i also removed the battery for about a half hour when the reset didn't work I'm fairly sure that the BIOS may have been changed by the app. i'm not familiar with the app and my son made the changes so getting details are out of the question anyway, the reset only recovers from the previous, not the root. i need to start fresh to remove any previous changes
  3. also, been searching for a about a week for someone with this type of problem that ends in a solution. now i'm close to taking it to the shop and pay to have a working computer again
  4. The precise issue I’m trying to resolve is the creation of a bootable BIOS recovery USB for an HP desktop. I’ve downloaded the correct exe from the HP website and the instructions say that a window will come up with a create USB selection. Instead it jumps to “C:\SWSetup\SP97118\BIOS Flash.htm” which is a (no) help screen that seems to be what would come up when launched after recovery. I’m willing to create a USB manually but it seems that I may need a special app for formatting a bootable version (not available in windows) does anyone have a resource for finding a solution? Here’s the long story I have a second hand HP Z220 desktop that had been upgraded nicely and gave it to my 13 yo son as a first gaming computer. Without any discussion he installed the afterburner app and cranked up the mods to max basically causing the GTX750 to lock up. I attempted to start in safe mode a number of times but eventually gave up and enabled the on board VGA output so I could remove the app. That’s the only change I made to the BIOS setting but the BIOS seems to have been corrupted. I’ve removed the graphics card and reset the BIOS. FAIL I’ve removed the CMOS battery. FAIL Current and persistent issue: No video out, power light flashes 8 times and alert beeps 8 times (2, pause, 2. 4 times) System details if pertinent: OS - Windows 10 x64 originally Win 7 OEM version Age of system less than 4 years Age of OS installation unknown CPU model intel i7 MotherBoard – original (12G extra RAM) Power Supply - original System Manufacturer HP Exact model number HP Z220 Desktop
  5. well, it's me again, had work commitments that kept me from spending any time on this until today in the meantime i looked into what it takes to reset the bios on this particular PC i've removed the video card there's a reset button on the motherboard you hold down for 5 secs, no result same problem i removed the battery for a couple of minutes and thought it came back because the unit didn't have a red power button and didn't beep pressed the power button to start the PC and the problem returned currently the battery is out, going to wait an hour or so the current and persistent issue: no display from the VGA port power button is red and flashes 8 times unit beeps 8 times, sets of 2 with the short delay between in about 20 secs the fan on the PS and the CPU fan kick in on high currently looking at threads on HP support with similar problems but so far none end with "solved"
  6. the PC is a HP z220 with the stock MB,i7 intel 14G RAM, the video card is a NVIDIA gtx 750 i bought it second hand and was working great until my son "adjusted" the setting with the afterburner app
  7. well, i removed the graphics card and the on board didn't start working, i replaced the card (in hopes it would force a change to the bios) and nothing changed when i power on i get 3 loud beeps, 3 times. power button stay red flashing no video out of the card or the VGA port on the motherboard i'm stumped as to the next step
  8. thanks for having this resource i'm in my 60s and built my first computer about 30 years ago now my 13yo wants me to know all the latest bells and whistles
  9. agreed, i'll try that. thanks now, i'll just need to move it out of the room to be able to work on it thanks for the advice, this will take me a while
  10. i did try to restart in safe mode, both by hitting CTL F8 during boot and via shift restart after windows is up i couldn't get it to start in safe move from the boot and once windows started, the display stops working whatever is on the screen stays on the screen, distorted and flashing that's why i tried to enable the on board the problem with rebooting in safe mode now, i have no working display at all the graphics card doesn't even work during boot. could this be because i need to remove the graphics card
  11. My 13yo son has made changes to his graphics settings using MSI afterburner i have no idea what changes he's made but the graphics card no longer has a working display the problem starts as windows 10 gets to the home screen after looking for solutions on line, i tried to enable the on board graphics via the bios to uninstall the MSI app and now the computer runs oddly the only change i made was to enabled the on board display when i saved and exited it restarted, then the power button flashed red and i the computer beeped a few times loudly the computer eventually starts up but within a minute the CPU fan starts running at high speed and the on board display still isn't working unfortunately, neither is the graphics card so i have no display whatsoever do i need to remove the graphics card to use the on board graphics?
