  1. I was trying to experiment on which gpu driver runs better on Linux (popos 22.04) , so I ran Phoronix benchmark's Unigine Heaven. What seems to be happening is that the benchmark will run and eventually the screen will blank out. I can't tell if the issue is just the card. Thinking that it was temperature related. I run sensors and monitor the temperature while the benchmark is running. As predicted, the temperature increase to 80C, but never reach the cutoff point of 100C. What do you think I should do to diagnose the issue. I am thinking of running it next time and then SSH to the box when it fails and look at the logs, but I am not entirely sure what logs to look at.
  2. I don't think this is because the OEM allow some hardware change. Everything changed on the box except the hard drive. It appears that MS has changed how licensing work. Now an OEM key will get attached to your MS account and then can be transfer to different machine, but you can use it only one at a time. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/i-have-a-digital-windows-10-key-attached-to-my/8663d2bd-0190-4abe-93b2-faaeae60a2ce It would probably suck to lose your MS account then.
  3. Recently, I build a PC out of old parts. One of them was from a dell XPS desktop. Much to my surprise, the hard drive boot properly on the new computer and Windows 10 activated without issue. When I look, it said it was digital license associated with my windows account. I was expecting it to say that you can't activated it because it was an OEM license. Do we not have OEM license these days?
  4. may be I am reading the list improperly. I was expecting it to be on all of the list, but I think perhaps Seasonic doesn't do multi-rail.
  5. In the old days, if someone wanted to buy reliable psu, I would recommend Seasonic. They weren't cheap but were mostly consistently good. I notice that Seasonic don't show up much in the tier list. Have they gone a bti downhill in quality or have other manufacturer gotten better?
  6. Thanks everyone. I notice that majority fo the links are not in English, so perhaps a majority of the Enermax are sold outside of the US, which is why I never see them in stores.
  7. I notice that Enermax DF revolution are on the tier list and is quite reasonable in price. However, there is no review on Enermax on sites nor forum nor youtube. Why is this brand so hidden? How did it end up on such a high tier in the tier list?
  8. Thank you. HI neither troubleshooter nor powercfg -restoredefaultschemes fixed the issue, I end up running powercfg with the GUID to add the missing profiles. If I run powercfg -restoredefaultschemes, it actually erases all power config except balance. Technically, it's not erased but more like making them not available to be selected.
  9. Recently, I have notice that all of the power profile on my laptop has disappeared and the only power profile left is balanced. Since the machine sits on my desk, I would like to change the profile to something higher performance. What is the cause of the profile disappearing and how can I get them back?
  10. I was thinking of doing a budget build using a cheap Intel i3 12100F. What GPU should I get with it. The plan is just to play general games on 1080p or 1440p. I was thinking of RS6600 or the 6600XT or may be one of the newer Intel models. What do you thinK?
  11. I think people who want the fastest will buy the highest end card even if it will give them may be 10% for a great deal more money. However, I don't feel that there is a large population of those users. Most will go for a low or midrange card. For people in that group, value might matter. They might for example get the next fastest graphics card if it will save them a lot of money. I wonder if this is some sort of extreme negotiation tactic by EVGA. With crypto-mining down, and possible reduction in economy, EVGA might want to have more flexibility and at least more timely information about the product from Nvidia. EVGA might feel that it's not worth the strong possibility of losing a lot of money since Nvidia may turn around and introduce a founders edition on then. This allow EVGA to exit without losing too much money and kick Nividia in the balls on the way out. EVGA appears to have about 40% of the USA market. While I think other AIB will gladly take up EVGA's share, it's still going to be some disruption. This will also signal that EVGA won't be pushed around if AMD were to approach them for a deal. While they said EVGA said they are not going to make more graphics card, just think of the market opportunity if they announced they have a new deal with AMD a few months later.
  12. A question I have, is Nvidia's treatment of partner typical of the GPU industry? Is AMD and Intel just as bad? I have heard that one reason Nvidia view their partner in disdain is because they want to eventually manufacturer and distribute the cards directly, but cannot at the moment because they don't have the resource to do that yet. EVGA might have seen the writing on the wall and exit the relationshiop early because they don't see a future in it.
  13. Are there software that can play Blueray DVD? I tried playing using VLC, but it requires installation of software that may be of questionable origin.
  14. I don't mind having at least 1 MS account on the box. I used MS stuff and will require a MS account any way. However, I usually have all of the user accounts as standard accounts and have 1 admin accounts and I rather that admin account be local for security reasons. I really don't want to have to setup a single admin online account for all of the W11 machine or separate admin online account for each machine.
  15. So eventually, Microsoft will require even windows 11 pro to use a microsoft account to setup. Can I used a dummy microsoft account to setup windows 11, add a local account and then delete the MS online account from the computer?
  16. Thanks for the clarification. I thought in Windows 11 Pro there was a way to get around not having a microsoft online account. What I typically do is to setup a local admin account for each machine. The other user account can be online but they have no admin rights.
  17. Thanks Goodbytes If device encryption just stores the key in the onedrive account, how does encryption work for a machine with multiple users? Does it only encrypt the directories used by the user? If I want encryption that works with local accounts, I would need bitlocker that comes with windows Pro? As for recovery key, suppose I do backup the key and TPM is wiped out, I can restore everything using the recovery key?
  18. I would like to encrypt my windows machine so that if someone were to pull out the hard disk and then connected to something like a Linux box, they won't be able to read the file system. I did some poking around and wanted to get verification for the features. On windows home, there is now something call Device encryption. This apparently you to encrypt your file items but requires a TPM, and a microsoft Windows account to work. It seems to store the key in the one drive account, which is why it needs to have a MS account. Device encryption seems to work with all edition of windows including home. For windows pro and enterprise, there is the old Bitlocker. This encrypts your whole drive. One advantage for work is that it can store the key into the AD server, but most people probably don't run domain controllers at home. 1. Does Bitlocker encrypt the whole drive and Device encryption do file by file? 2. What about non-MS online accounts, does device encryption not encrypt those accounts? 3. Is there a performance difference between the two? 4. What happens if you accidently clear TPM, is there a way to recover if you backup the keys?
  19. I think we need to make a distinction on use cases. For someone who just do documents, getting 4K may not sense because the text content may be the same. While there may be some improvement in sharepness I would think that it may not be worth the money and trouble with scaling. If you do a lot of photo editing, the 4K would make sense because you can fit more of the pictures on the monitor. For a photo, the small picture and high dpi may actually be good. I am not sure about gaming, but if you have the cash, I guess 4K gaming could be a thing.
  20. May be things are better now, but I remember obnoixous things that occur with scaling. Hover over on website would be unreadable. Some of programs didn't scale. Remote desktop in particular was unusable due to scaling. Ok, the plan will be using a 27 inch 1440p, and it will be an increase in screen size since the current one is 19 inch. I think if the screen was 1 to 1, it would still be bigger and if you edit photo, that 4K would result in larger space.
  21. I did an experiment where I look at different computers that I own and calculate their dpi and then located computers that I had to scale. My work laptop for example has a FHD resolution screen but is small enough that it had to be scaled to 125%. I think I worked out that I should stay below dpi 111 for a distance of 2.5 feet. Some of the software don't seemed scale properly. I think I might stick with below 4K for now.
  22. Supposedly, the laptop will support 4K@50. It's listed in the spec. The monitor is much older than the laptop. It's basically something we found in the basement and has no HDMI. We had to use a converter because the laptop does not have a dsub or dvi output. Basically, due to work at home, we had to come up with a setup that would work in a hurry. The plan is also to get a newer laptop with a newer GPU eventually. So if we need to scale to 125 or 150, wouldn't this make the screen the same size as a 1440p screen?
  23. I am looking to upgrade my wife's monitor. She has a dual monitor setup where there is a main external monitor and her laptop. The external monitor is her main monitor, while the laptop is mostly use for secondary when she needs to compare something. She usually uses it for documentation and presentation work and some photo work. She rarely play games. The distance from the main monitor to her eyes is roughly 30 inches. Both of us are middle age, so our eyes are not the best. Currently, her monitor is a 19 inch 1440 x 900 monitor. I like to upgrade it to a 27 inch 4K, but I wonder if the graphics may be too small or too large. How would it compare to her current setup? Thanks.
  24. Urrgh, is this some sort of scam to get people to upgrade to pro? While my wife does want to have a windows box, I might consider avoiding the hassle and just not get one. Unlike a few years ago, my need for a PC outside of work is reduced.
