Andster29 got a reaction from Nicnac in Checking for Referance
A couple of restarts later... Everything is running perfectly. Decided to just turn off CPU as it was not finding a workload. Finally happy to have my desktop folding as well as my server.

Andster29 got a reaction from Joveice in Good build?
I would go a decent sized SSD for the boot drive or a flash drive depending on the os you are going to use. Most OS's that people use for a NAS are not bottlenecked by the speeds of even the most generic flash drive. This would lower your cost and also leave more room in the hot-swap bays for future expansion.

Andster29 got a reaction from Xanthe_2871 in Could any old GPU help out?
Any gpu newer than the 400 series and is higher than a x50 should help. Anything lower or older is not worth it and just becomes a power draw.

The points update every hour. You will not see a point change until an hour past. It sounds like you are running the chrome browser version. This is a much lower version of the full F@H program. Chrome Work Unites are inherently worth less points because you are not actually doing as much work as the F@H client allows.

Quad channel ram just means that it is certified to work in quad channel setups with no issues.

Andster29 got a reaction from Nikolithebear in Best Choice for a home server
Get a used Dell 2900 for like $200 or so. I use one for a plex server and able to run a couple extra VM's at the same time. If you really want to use FreeNas, then the dell is actually a bad choice. I recommend ESXI with the 2900.

Set up ESXI and play with virtual machines, because why not.

Andster29 got a reaction from BiscuitMassacre in HELP MOBO PANIC
As a last measure, just take it and unplug everything. Let it sit for a day with no power in it at all. When you do RMA the board, call ASUS directly and play dumb. Emailing them takes an eternity and a half. Just call, get it done in a hour and don't give away what you did. Tell them it just stoped working. It will cost like $10 to ship. Yes I know it sucks, but better than getting a brand new board. Use the box the board came in to ship it to them. Not the full box , but the smaller one the the board was physically in.

Andster29 got a reaction from dalekphalm in To Raid or not. HTPC/Plex Server build
Just doubled checked. Yes I am wrong. You only need 3 drives for RAID 5. I have just always used a minimum of 4 drives when setting up a RAID 5.

Andster29 got a reaction from AaronOP in Any Wireless, Rechargeable, Claw Grip Mice?
As always, I suggest my Logitech G602. I always use a palm grip. It is not rechargeable, but the batteries last for freaking ever. It can even run on a single AA battery if need be.

Andster29 got a reaction from AaronOP in Any Wireless, Rechargeable, Claw Grip Mice?
For the most part I use a more claw-grip with the mouse. The left and right triggers are set up perfectly that they feel the same force no matter where you are along the button.

That is actually pretty cool. I would have never thought to do that for a mod.

Andster29 reacted to scobie56 in Vinyl wrapped my GPU
So i finally got round to vinyl wrapping my gpu (Strix GTX 970) and i am pleased with the end result for my first time wrapping and modding a component. apart from warping the card upside down i think i did a good job
i used this vinyl wrap https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MK457A2/ref=sr_ph_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468332236&sr=sr
The before and after images (i dint take a image before so i just took one from google)

Andster29 reacted to x3x53530 in HDD not recognized in Disk Management
I have had this happen with usb flash drives before after using them to install linux and such. Note the size of the drives currently installed as well as the new one. Do the following:
Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) as administrator
run the following commands:
C:\> Diskpart
DISKPART> list disk
DISKPART> select disk ? (replace ? with disk # that matches the size of the new one. Make sure you select the correct disk. The disk # is usually the highest one.)
DISKPART> clean
DISKPART> convert mbr (or gpt) (use gpt for disk greater than 2TB)
DISKPART> create partition primary
DISKPART> select part 1
DISKPART> format fs=ntfs label=(name of disk if you want one) quick
DISKPART> assign letter (letter) (use a letter not currently in use)
DISKPART> list volume (should see the disk listed, and it should show in disk management and Explorer)
Just take your time and follow every step. Windows may prompt you to format the disk part way through the steps, just select not to and complete the steps with Diskpart.

I would like to see a video showing us how to cluster computers together I have multiple computers and would like to know if I can connect them in such a way as to make a super computer and utilise all the cpu's and gpu's as one computer

Andster29 reacted to Imakuni in What should I review next?
Review Skylake; more specifically, does power phases matter? Featuring 6, 10 and 16 phase mobos, let's see if they'll affect OCing now that the IVR is gone.

Andster29 got a reaction from Bajantechnician in CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z Not Posting
Then that must have been a warning sign for this issue. I will have to tell Asus that next time they email back. I had no other issues with the board up until this point .
