  1. So I used to be a Windows guy until Windows 7 support ended. Now I’ve got a dual boot Debian/Linux Mint desktop and a Macbook running MacOS which is a custom OS from a version of freeBSD. I’m using the Macbook all the time and now don’t need the other machine lol. Anyone in the same position? MacOS is super polished and I don’t think it would crash randomly like Windows. I don’t see a purpose in using Debian day to day if I don’t leave my computer running 24/7 for a month. Debian is too user unfriendly while Linux Mint is too clunky and ugly in my opinion. Debian is super stable but user unfriendly while Linux Mint is user friendly but ugly looking. MacOS blows both out of the water. I can’t even get Debian to let me be root while Linux Mint lets me be root from the installation setup lol. Oh and debian installation is like waiting until new years eve to get halfway through the install process and you have to be there to click next next next next next next. Reminds me of that episode from the simpsons where homer gets that toy bird to peck at his Y button.
  2. I am returning from not gaming since 2014. I would like to buy either a PS4 or Xbox One. Apparently there is the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X/S. Is there a point to buying either if I will be playing on a monitor that will probably be 1080P/1440P? I will be mainly playing games like Resident Evil, the Evil Within, the Dragon Age, the Witcher, Nier, maybe Red Dead 2, Far Cry 5, some FPSs like Doom and Fallout 4. Is there a point to waiting for the PS5? I want to play using a XIM APEX using a keyboard and mouse. It should preferably not be loud but I want the best graphics and 60fps.
  3. Hey guys, I’m looking for a new 15.6” laptop for university/college. My budget is up to $2600. I’m looking for something I can use 12+ hours daily without getting red palms and red indentations from edges and red fingertips from too low profile keyboards. It should have thick keys and non sharp edges to put my palms. No weird circular keys like on Lenovo and ASUS laptops. It must have standard square keys like on a classic keyboard that have been made for the past 30+ years. #1 priority is comfort. #2 is battery it must have at least 10 hours battery life. #3 is it must have excellent specs and an SSD. #4 it must be lighter or equal to 1.5kg (3.3 pounds). Basically I’m looking for a laptop made in the old style pre 2010 back when laptops were comfortable and had decent keyboards and trackpads without these ridiculously sharp edges and hard surfaces? Think like the type of classic keyboard on old IBM laptops like in the picture attached. In the second picture from this 2005 model HP laptop you can clearly see that there are no sharp edges anywhere and you can use it all day and night without any pain. It seems like computer manufacturers are in a mad rush to make their laptops as slim as possible to the point where the keyboards are completely flat and and there is no place to put your palms and if there is there’s a jagged edge of metal to leave marks on your arms/hands. They look good but are uncomfortable to use.
  4. That’s true but it will probably be released in like June or July in Australia and be $3000. I returned the MBP and got my money back and now I’m thinking to myself I have no computer new enough right now to do my uni/college work maybe I should just buy the Air and be done with it or get a cheap Windows laptop while waiting for them to release the new Macbook.
  5. I’ve decided I’ll return the MBP 2019. Compaing I’ll the i7 Macbook Air 2017 and Macbook Pro 2015 3.1ghz i7 the i7 5557U in the Macbook Pro 2015 is faster than the i7 5650U in the Macbook Air 2017. So I’ll buy a Macbook Pro 2015. Both have scissor switch keyboards.
  6. Hey guys, I bought a Macbook Pro 2019 256GB 12 days ago. After using it all this time I really like MacOS, coming from loving Linux distros like Linux Mint and Ubuntu. Everything works just the way I want it to in terms of the OS and software. I haven’t had a single issue since migrating from Windows. My biggest problem is with the keyboard, even after altering the way I type by pressing the keys lightly I still have pain in my fingertips every time I want to use it, to the point where I’d rather avoid getting on the computer just to avoid having to type on the keyboard it’s that bad. When using the Macbook Pro my typing speed is significantly reduced compared to a regular keyboard. I also don’t like the trackpad I have pain in my index finger from having to hold down to click every time. I love the battery life and the lightness, the high quality aluminium design and high resolution screen but the keyboard and to some extent the trackpad is a dealbreaker for me. So I started looking around online to find the last models of the Macbook without the butterfly keyboard and I found the Macbook Air 2017. I went in store to check it out the screen looks worse but the keyboard seems a lot more usable. So I was wondering compared to the Macbook Pro 2019 which is unusable for me, how much slower is the Macbook Air 2017 and for the people that own one how do you find the keyboard compared to the MBP 2019? I am also open to using some kind of highly popular linux distro assuming it can edit Office files and run the latest version of Packet Tracer and mainstream IT software on a new laptop of any variety as long as it doesn’t have a butterfly-style keyboard and has excellent battery life (10+ hours).
  7. No experience. Skills: I can program pretty well in Java and am really good at Networking. Plan on learning C++ and Python. I'm good at finances and budgeting. I never waste money on anything and am very specific on how I spend my money. I'm not the type of person to start a business overnight like someone mentioned actually. I posted on here to give myself an idea of what I will do and to test the waters. Once I learn those high level languages I will get together with my uni friends and build something that hasn't been done before. Most probably an AI program or something in AI very sophisticated tailored to a specific product/market.
  8. Windows 10 zealots I call summon thee! The minimum specs of Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 are all the same. In Windows 7 you could use any quad core and you’d be fine, same with Windows 8.1 just with a bit more RAM. Windows 10 on the other hand requires an SSD, i5 or i7 made in the last 4 years and 16GB of RAM to run comfortably. Don’t even try to run it on a 5400RPM hard drive. Something like an i5 3470S yep its old but it runs Windows 8.1 very quickly. Upgrade to Windows 10 – nope sorry don’t even try using it. What’s a “Windows 10 PC” or “Windows 10 Computer” and what makes it so special to say something compared to something like god forbid!! a “Linux Mint PC”, an “Ubuntu PC” or even a “Windows 7 PC” or “Windows 8.1 PC” what’s so special about the 10 prefix on the end? If it was Windows 9 would people treat it so endearingly like it’s bleeding edge and everything else on the market is inferior and ancient and everyone needs to upgrade every single device like their toaster and fridge to Windows 10 or else it will spontaneously combust and explode due to so much ransomware and malware from running any other operating system. So apparently just because Microsoft stopped Windows 7 updates the OS is now unusable and everyone that still uses it has an IQ of 50 and are technologically incompetent because they decide to continue to use an prehistoric operating system while everyone else has downgraded to the exalted OS of the Gods endorsed by Billy Gates himself! No one should have any choice in what OS you want they want to run. If you’re running anything other than Windows 10 you should throw your computer in a furnace or upgrade to Windows 10 immediately or you’ll lose all of your money to uber evil cybercriminals and you’ll be homeless! Finally what is that start menu? Or is this godly OS beyond criticism because it’s Windows 10! It’s perfect! How dare I think otherwise!! I have to go through 4 menus just to adjust whether I want to change a setting beyond something incredibly simple like the wallpaper. Maybe I haven’t bought enough Windows 10 licenses so I haven’t been enlightened yet. Want any support from your college IT teachers? Nope sorry if you’re running Linux Mint you should securely wipe your OS with 32 passes and install Windows 10 immediately! Because Linux baaaaaaaaaddd Windows 10 goooooooooooooooood
  9. I have a Certificate IV in IT Networking and want to get an entry level job in IT in either a help desk role or technical support job but have zero work experience. Literally every job listed on every job site requires previous experience in a similar role or customer service experience. I want to be able to support myself as I study but having no work experience gives me zero chances for any job. I haven’t applied for any job yet knowing this. How do I get out of this conundrum?
  10. I find that overly pessimistic. Everyone has to start somewhere. You have to start at the bottom to make it to the top. The people that don’t want to do this sort of thing don’t have the drive and ambition in the first place. The fact that I am willing to try puts me ahead of people that think inside the box.
  11. For me networking is just an example. I really want to be the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. It’s incredibly unlikely but it’s not impossible. I’m not looking to be the richest man in the world but it’s possible for someone to found a large business and make millions like Kim Dotcom. I want to be as capable as him. I was looking to do something of that kind. Creating a large corporation based on a type of software/technology. I could do it with friends at uni.
  12. Hello, When I finish my degree I’ll be a graduate (I still haven’t graduated) and I have no experience working in IT. I am also looking to start a business when I graduate. Is this possible? Is it a good idea or a bad one? Would it be better to get a job first work for a few years or would it not be a good use of my time when I could get my business started by then? I will be 26 when I graduate (pretty old) I am 22 years old now. My plan is to start out simple selling computer hardware and then branching out to designing networking solutions for businesses. Has anyone else started an IT business and what has your experience been? Is it difficult to compete with large corporations? What kind of stress levels do you have? Is there any hope of being able to earn a living from this possibly or is there too much competition and not enough customers/too expensive to run the business? In terms of money what amount would I need to get started? How would I get started? What kind of operational costs are there?
  13. It might be a better idea to upgrade my HP Pavilion TouchSmart 23-f203a All-in-One Desktop PC's Nvidia GT610 to something like a GTX 750Ti or something like that. Is this possible? It'll get me started with gaming and all I have to do is buy a GPU. It has an i5 3470S and 6GB of RAM.
