zogthegreat reacted to beninu in How to stop Dropbox from taking over my USB drives
Many ask this question on the internet - I did myself, probably because I was too lazy to go through settings menu.
Many also give a ridiculously stupid reply - most often the Dropbox support staff, saying something in the line of opting out from "photo import", which has NOTHING to do with the problem - like - at all! But Dropbox supporters are notoriously stupid or stoned. They are like the cartoon supporter that always start treating people like they are idiots asking them: "What happens if you restart windows?" as if this is something you wouldn't try BEFORE contacting support.

But, luckyly there IS help. The fact is, that there is BOTH a per drive AND a per installation option to backup drives. The per drive is what you opt out from when checking "Don't ask again", when asked to backup a newly inserted external device. It is very vague (and bad fraseologi from Dropbox) but it actually only means not to ask again for this PARTICULAR drive. And the horrible way it makes sure not to ask again is to litter your drive with a binary file, which can be an outright disaster if you have a boot image on the drive that needs to be exact to the last bit to work correctly. There are so many other ways Dropbox could have solved this without polluting the drive by writing unwelcome files to the root folder of the drive, like, for instance, save the unique HW identifier for the drive in an internal (or cloud) database so it would look up the DB to see if you have already opted out of automatic backup for this external drive. But no - they went for the amateur/noob programmers solution - alas!

Would you instead want it not to ask for EVERY newly connected drive you do set that in options in this menu:

This box is usually ticked by default. Untick the box to disable the question to backup newly connected external drives.

    Hope this helps.

@Gunned Ninja Originally, I was planning to cast these parts in resin. However, I've been doing the math on the materials that I will need to complete the project and I've come to the conclusion that it would be best to wait another month or so and buy a 3D printer. The materials that I need, (resin mold making kit + the resin + this, that and whatever other little parts), are more expensive in Canada than in the US. If the border was open, I could order from the US to my mailbox across the border, however, it looks like it will be a while before that happens.

I found a Ender 3 on Amazon Canada for $340 CAD, so I'm going to finish this project with the parts that I have made and wait to get the printer before building the other TrueNAS boxes that I'm planning. So I will finish this with what I have now and save the coin for the 3D printer.

Thanks @fonzz1e! The case is a Thermaltake Snow. It's a work in progress. I've been holding off completing the build because I needed a 3D printer, However, I now have a nice and shiny Ender 3 Pro, so now I can get back to work on my desktop case, along with several other projects that I have on the back burner:

    Hi @avTronic
I "solved" this problem by moving my computer case to a shelf above my desk:

I also added a piece of wood to deflect the cold air that comes in through the open door. There is also a heater on the wall under the window, so the hot air from the heater travels up and helps keep things warm. Now my system temps are usually around 30c. The nice thing about having it here is that in the summer, my air conditioner is in the window below the shelf, so I get cool air to keep things from overheating.

zogthegreat got a reaction from MultiGamerClub in "OK Boomer" - Why do we say no discrimination is allowed, but ageism is OK?
    Hi everyone!

So I was watching an LTT video a couple of days ago and Linus was making a commit on how older people use an email client instead of a web browser. He very pointedly stated "OK Boomer" as an insult to older people for not using a webpage interface.

If I post up a discriminatory comment about someone's sexual identity, religious preference, or genetic heritage, I will be slammed and possibly banned from the forum, yet it seems that discrimination against the elderly is perfectly acceptable. Why is that? I have 4 email account and yet, going by Linus's comment, I'm an old, slow, useless and basically a caveman for using Thunderbird instead of having 4 webpages open to deal with my emails.

I'm not a "boomer", (apparently I'm "Gen X"), but I see this discrimination with alarm as I age. Not sure if Linus and others who shout out "OK Boomer" all the time are aware of this, but sooner or later, they will grow old and face the same discrimination against the elderly that they are propagating now. Yes, it's cute to say "OK Boomer" and it get's some likes from 18 year old kid living in his/her mothers basement, but it also sets up the most vulnerable in our society for discrimination and harassment. What does Linus and others like him who push this mindset plan to do when they hit their 50's? I'm sure that in 20 years, there will be something to replace the webpage interface for email or some other tech that changes the way we do things again. Will these people be content to listen to people saying "OK Millennials", or will they get upset and complain about the discrimination that they themselves started?

Everyone in the "OK Boomer" crowd need to start thinking about their future. Yes, you will get old, it's part of being alive. And yes, you will face discrimination, that's also part of being alive. I'm an anglophone living in Quebec, I have to deal with language discrimination every day. Which makes me more sensitive to other forms of discrimination that I see around me.

I think that it is time for the "OK Boomer" crowd to grow up and realize that the seeds that they are planting today will bear fruit in their own future and not in a way that they will like. Discrimination in any form is wrong and if we truly want a more egalitarian society, than we need to stop finding reasons to discriminate against others. Even if they are old and don't understand all of the technology changes around them.

How about we start trying to remember how many time in our own personal youths someone who was older taught us how to tie our shoes, cross a street and in general survive our childhoods. We didn't say "OK Boomer" to these people, we said "thank you" and we continued to grow. How about instead of saying "OK Boomer" to someone who is elderly and doesn't understand the technological changes around them, we try to remember the help, guidance and care that we received as children and "pay it forward" to the generations who came before and laid the groundwork for what we have today? Give them a hand instead of the insults. They did, after all, teach you how to tie your shoes.

Whilst awaiting for some parts to be delivered, I went back to work on the mount. If I was doing a "one and done", I would have decided that the mount was good enough as is. However, since two more of my friends have expressed interest in this setup, I decided to put in the extra work in making it look nice. Now, I know that this is a piece that will never be seen by the end users, but I would know that it's not as good as I could do, so.....

JB Weld is really nice to work with, however, it does seem have a problem with warping when used in this manner. I needed everything to be level before I make the mold, so I got out my mini drill press and some router bits that I had in my tool bin:

And then I started hand milling the top to get it mostly even. I did this by slowly going over the surface in lines, gradually adjusting the depth by about .5mm each pass:

Then I decided that it was safe to use the larger bit, which made things go a little faster

Once the top had a level enough surface, I flipped the mount over and started on the bottom. However, I first sprayed the bottom with black primer to show me any low spots:

To finish the bottom surface I needed some spotting putty, but I don't have any and for some reason, I'm disinclined towards running out to the store to get some today:

So I used some regular two stage epoxy to fill in the holes and divets on the bottom surface:

Once the epoxy cures, I'll go over it again with the router bit. I'll pickup some spotting putty later to give it it's final surface before I make the mold. A quick side note, if you try hand milling something like I'm doing here, be careful how deep you set you router bit. I found that if I'm getting dust, I'm making good cuts, but if I'm getting chips like in the picture below, I'm going to deep:

My experience is that JB Weld, when used in this manner, is that it is actually rather brittle and will snap easily if your not careful.

The Linux family of operating systems is the best for multi-CPU and cluster setups. Period. There's a reason that every single one of the top supercomputers in the world runs Linux: it's the best for that type of computer.

If you are unfamiliar with Linux, I'd recommend starting with Ubuntu, as there is a lot of documentation and support resources, it has better software support than most other distributions, and it's still quite stable and robust, even if it isn't the absolute best in that last regard.

Big, chunky, and durable parts: FDM

Little, precise, and fragile parts: SLA

There's a little bit of overlap in there, but SLA (in my mind) is mostly for detail parts and high-fidelity shelf pieces, whereas FDM can make really tough mechanical parts as long as you don't expect high precision.

Yes, the setup that you listed will work. Be careful what RAID card you get. If you gong with EXT4, then you can use a "real" RAID card, I.E. one that is considered hardware RAID. If your going with ZFS, you need a RAID card that is flashable to IT mode or a card that you buy with IT mode already flashed.

Here's my server for an example:

    Supermicro X9DR3-LN4F+
    2 x's Xeon E5-2620
    128gb DDR3 ECC
    2 x's Intel DC S3700 200gb - mirrored for OS
    1 Intel DC S3700 400gb - ZFS SLOG drive
    2 x's Seagate Enterprise ST8000NM0065 8TB - ZFS mirror for data
    Proxmox for system OS

The nice thing about the X9DR3 motherboard is that it comes with onboard SAS that can be flashed into IT mode, so I don't need a separate RAID card.

[EDIT] I did a quick Google search and it seems that you can cross flash the Fujitsu RAID card.

[EDIT 2] Not sure what type of deal your getting on your hardware, but @AbydosOne is right about your not being clear on what your trying to accomplish. The hardware that you list is rather high end for a simple at home NAS. You can get a prebuilt NAS for a lot less cash than what this setup will cost you. If you really want a small home setup that you build yourself, I would recommend lower end hardware.

They did, after all, teach you how to tie your shoes.

after a careful check of the cables and connected everything assembly of the outer panel.

    pump assembly

the underlying part (the base) has a space of about 1.5 cm this will serve me to house all the excess cables and the LED controller.

next step video card assembly and custom loop ...

zogthegreat got a reaction from adarw in "OK Boomer" - Why do we say no discrimination is allowed, but ageism is OK?

That is an incredible amount of work. But the end results are worth it!

zogthegreat reacted to Cre8 Modding in Rossi - Moto GP Build
Well, it's been a while eh? The Moto GP build has been put on hold for a number of reasons, but it's finally time to come back to it and get moving. 2021 was a manic year for me and with other commissions and builds, this one got pushed to the side, so much so that Rossi has now even retired. With 2022 fresh, it's time I caught up with some of my personal builds but this one needed to go right back to the beginning.

My paintwork is, well, ok, ish. But after having the Intel Gamer Days build powder-coated, I decided to treat this build to the same full paint job. The whole system was covered in dust and needed stripping right down so I could send the case parts away, and now they are back ready to get cracking! The finish is beautiful on this and the RAL colour match is perfect for the theme of the build, being the 2010 M1 Yamaha.

With all the parts back, it's time to get the case built back up, and the difference the powder coating makes is beyond amazing.

There are some slight changes coming along the way from the original build, first up is a change of CPU block going with the Alphacool XPX Auroura Pro. It's a better-looking block than the black solid one in the second part of the build log.

The Monsta rads didn't fit first time round, and so Alphacool were kind enough to send over 2 45mm versions, however, for the rebuild I have managed to cram one of the Monstas in with a 45 to the front of the case.

The cables for this are from my good friend Michael Sheppard, To The Wire Mods, they are amazing and given they have spent the best part of a year in the box, its finally time to start threading them into this beast of a case, and they are perfect for the build!

So I am pretty much back to the point where the build was at a year ago, albeit with some improvements to the overall system. There's still a whole load of things I want to change but for now, at least, this system is getting the love it deserves!

Thanks man. I watched a long tutorial video on NextCloud last night so I am now in with a rough idea of what I need to do. Will obviously follow it through the steps once I am built.

I kinda have OCD. In fact no, I won't make light of a horrible affliction. I *do* have OCD. As such I really wanted to fill all of the drive planes. So I did. I found some 180GB Intel 1500 series SSDs on Ebay and bought three for £45.

They should look like that. I know that this looks pretty crazy. In a way it is. However, I did mention that the £10 for the IO panel for the USB front was the penultimate spend. Well it isn't now. Those drives are. I need to get them all situated and populated, then work out how to span the volumes into chunks. Once that is done I will know how big the "backup backup" drive needs to be. Will get an Ironwolf. I've also been reading on how you launch scripts that do a weekly backup of all of my spanned volumes onto a single drive that does bugger all else all week.

Nice thing is that with Linux you can still keep adding to the span. I think it would be bonkers to put 12 drives in a span and pray that none die, so maybe 3-4 volumes would be better. Which is cool, because that way I can choose what my friends get access to. I can also assign them their own space and we can share movies and music that way 🙂

Zog, i would totally recommend, you have a look at the Pinecil. It costs 26USD on its own and together with a power supply, a couple of tips, a stand etc... It blows all of what you just listet out of the water while being smaller and around the same price as your set. It might even be cheaper, if you have an old power brick, that you can use for it. It can do everything that the ones you listed, can do, and more. The TS100 is also highly recommended. It has an a little higher maximum voltage of 24V and with this a little more power, but doesnt work with USB power delivery. Performance-wise, they are otherwise the same. They even use the same tips.

The only function it doesnt have is the heatgun of the station your son owns.

So the thing that's taken me so long with is the HDD mounts. As I alluded to earlier, any cognizant person of reasonable intelligence would have grabbed some zip ties and duct tape and the job would be done. However, I'm bored and decided to make in the following manner. I don't have a 3D printer, so I had to make a bracket to hold the drives. I decided to make a mold to make a cast resin holder. I tried 2 different ways, making a mold on a piece of board and making a mold insitu inside the actual machine. The insitu gave me the best results. I used JB Weld for my initial mold:

The blue tape is to keep the JB Weld from sticking to the motherboard. I also coated it with some neutral shoe polish as a mold release agent. After the JB Weld hardened, I got this:

After cleaning it up, I had this:

Although it look rough right now, I am planning to smooth it out. I tried using JB Weld for the HDD mount plates, but in the end, I realized that I could use one of the 2.5 mounting plates for my desktop case:

The left edge was thin and I'm not sure how it will come out once I place it into the mold making material, (not sure what to call it, seems all of the videos that I've watched calls everything "the mold"), so I added a thin line of JB Weld to the edge to thicken it.
