  1. Hey Biohazard777! So, the price was $750 CAD, and I would definitely see if I can talk it down a bit. Again, I am new to picking out a PC like this and what value it should realistically have. Ok, so even when the actual product (laptop) was made, the components like the GPU could be even older, I would not have caught that, so thank you! much appreciated. I will watch for that as well in future searches. And ah, yes, I was looking more into that and forgot that could be the case of running an eGPU, so thank you for that. Makes more sense the way you put it, getting less for paying even more in the long run. I do really appreciate the advice, as not only was it informational, but it gives me an insight as to HOW and WHAT other factors to look at going forward. Thank you!
  2. So I am kinda skeptical to buying used tech, and am worried as well it will become outdated as well. I have however, found what I think is a good deal listed on FB Marketplace and thought to ask for advice. The laptop in question is linked below (Asus TUF fx705dy) for $750. Guy said he bought it in 2021 on Amazon new, and just upgraded to a desktop PC. I was THINKING of upgrading or adding to my PCs with a gaming capable computer, or even a decent work laptop and eventually an eGPU setup when I save up a bit more. (Honestly was thinking and looking into a Framework laptop, and then an eGPU route later). I am a recent Engineering graduate, and am hoping to start my own small business someday with 3D printing, decal making, CNC laser etching and working my way up to more complex machinery and parts. Currently I am running a Dell Inspiron 13 inch 7386 laptop 2-in-1. I had it for my last few years of school for note taking and light software modeling work (SolidWorks, CAD, 3D printing, decal software, MATLab etc). Unfortunately I am about to replace the battery as the life of it has gone WAY down, and it runs hot more often than I like. I was thinking of transitioning it to being an on the go and lighter work laptop, focusing on sketching designs (touchscreen with pen/drawing tablet capabilities), web browsing, word docs, light model work etc. Then a more capable computer or laptop (no NEED for touchscreen or 2 in 1 capabilities) that would take my more heavy modeling, coding, simulations (maybe?) and rendering work. I don't play a lot of games, but wanted to get into it sometime, or be able to do so someday. I am not opposed to trying to even build my own PC, and am budgeting. I don't have an EXACT budget, but I know that price to performance costs money, and would have to choose what I want most. Iam aiming for $1000 or less, and hopefully if it is cooser to $1000 I can save up for an eGPU in a few months. I am hoping to be able to play some racing games like Forza and F1 probably, at medium settings or slightly lower. So essentially my question is, is that laptop a good option for my situation? Am I on the right track of thinking or should I focus my mind on building a desktop PC? If you see any sales in Ontario that fit this, or deals and offers online I would greatly appreciate the links or notices. I am also open to criticism in my thinking, as I am new-ish to the computer tech and gaming scene. Thanks in advance. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07YZ1CM55?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&th=1&psc=1
  3. WOW! This is AWESOME! Thank you very much for putting this together! Yeah, Looking at this I will definitely need to up my budget, and save up to afford this setup. I appreciate this as it gives me a good picture to look at and say "This can work", and then my Engineering thinking goes "Ok, how can I learn more about this, reverse Engineer this and make it better or more my way", not saying there is ANYTHING wrong with what I see there, as of course budget is just something I have to work with, I just mean this gives me an example to learn from, which I seem to work best from? Kinda have a baseline of where to look and compare. I will take a look at the video soon, I have just dipped my toes in the water so to speak ,and haven't seen all of LTT, but LOVE what I have seen. I like that it is informative and seems to be open to all audiences and overall interesting. I am looking through PC part picker as I just saw it in a video and was like "THAT IS AN AWESOME IDEA!". As for the SSd, I bought one about 2 years ago as I had thought to put it into my old laptop myself, but got super nervous and chickened out, and it is sitting in my PC parts bin I have been saving. It was a Kingston replacement SSD kit, I think 240 Gb one? I will grab the model number next time I go home and see if the specs on it are still worth to use it, or maybe to build it into another external hard drive. (I already have a 2TB travel one I got and put basically EVERYTHING onto it). Also, I don't really go to Costco much, but I had no idea they sold PC parts! I will definitely keep an eye out. Maybe another reason to look into getting a membership for there. I REALLY appreciate this platform to jump off from! Thank you for your help!
  4. Hey I realized after it was VERY open ended, and I kind of intended open ness, but not as open as I came across. Currently I have a Dell Inspirion 7000 series 2in1 13 inch ultrabook with an 8th gen i7 (my new main for notetaking at University, and portability) and my old Laptop I just had to factory reset (had the bluescreen of death) is a Asus N550JK that is 5 years old and HUGE (like 8lbs), which has an Intel i7-4700hq. I would like to build a gaming PC that is a little more versatile to run the likes of 3d modeling software maybe? It would be a tradeoff for performance and price though. Ideally I would like to get into higher end games, mainly Forza Horizon 4, and if there are some components I can get to help me also run say SolidWorks, that won't cost another arm and leg, I might as well do that. Unfortunately, my current laptops do not have LighteningBolt USB, so no external GPU options there. As for coding, I think I may get a linux based OS on a flashdrive and used that for when coding in certain languages and projects, and I am now downloading and going to try Microsoft's Visual studio, that can apparently take multiple languages. The linux flashdrive would be so that I can run that OS when needed, without have to partition my drives on my new laptop or mess with Windows OS and booting. I have a friend I talked to about that so I think I will use that option as well as additional software with this laptop for coding. Being a student, my budget is as low as I can get, and again, more so a bang for buck idea. Ideally, under $500, and able to play Forza and other games of that benchmark. Now, I have some of my Uncles old stuff in storage at my home and he used to be into building PCs until late 2000s. So there are a few cases/towers around I may be able to use and call it a "sleeper" LOL. Pretty sure the only other components that may be viable is the power supply? But still looking into that. The rest would have to be bought and built.
  5. Hey Thanks for the support! And at the moment I have started watching the budget builds series as well! It inspired me to look into this more and try it sometime. And thanks for the advice! It just takes me a bit to narrow down what I am trying to find and get hte required information for that topic/part. I will keep it up though! Unfortunately, my current laptops do not have LighteningBolt USB, so no external GPU options there, and my processor on my old laptop is an Intel i7-4700hq. Not fast enough for most games. It may still run Solidworks, but I have to wait to reinstall it as it had crashed and I had to do a factory reset on it. That way I could use this laptop (Dell Inspirion 2 in 1, 13 inch) for school and notes, and the old Laptop for the heavy software work and keep it at home (it weighs like 8 lbs LOL). Then, a desktop for gaming. So I am still trying to see what I can do to with these current laptops for now, and maybe see if it would be worth taking any parts out of the old laptop to build the new PC, but not likely.
  6. Hey! Very new here, and trying to get a good footing in the PC world before I start asking for much help with builds. I have seen many cool things done with PCs, and it would beneficial to have the knowledge for my field of work eventually, as well as a hobby and for gaming eventually. I want to get into a bit of everything with PCs (coding, building, hardware, sleepers..etc). I want to learn about building PCs, what the specs mean and how to compare them, as well as how to build a best "Bang for Buck" PC. I am hoping for some input on areas to learn, how did everyone else learn and get into it, any resources for learning, and any good initial tips when starting to look for information. This is hopefully to give me a direction to look when learning, and not believing EVERYTHING I read on the internet lol. Thank you!
  7. Hey! So very new here, and I wanted to throw out some ideas and maybe get some feedback before looking into some things too much. I am very new to this, (as seen in another post about starting to learn) but wanted to get into a bit of PC gaming. Mainly Forza Horizon 4. I am wondering what my best Bang for Buck build might look like? Where to find the best deals on components, and what else I may need that I am not thinking of. This is just to get some more expert opinions so I have a direction of where to look. I would like to keep my budget as low as possible (Well under $1000 CDN), but if it needs to be higher I can just set aside more money for a later time and save up for it.
