  1. I have a powerful(ish) main workstation but a new job and personal circumstances mean i may be travelling or not at home when working remotely. Im looking for a laptop with a large screen, 64gb ram, decent but lower end GPU and upgradeable storage and crucially a decently high core count. There are so many skus, so many options and being more of a workstation guy i have no idea where to begin. Any recommendations or even just a range i should look at would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
  2. DIY In-the-wall thin client would be an interesting video. However there is an off-the-shelf option... Can be PoE or have a barrel jack plugged into it. https://www.chippc.com/jack-pc.html
  3. So i downloaded the same videos OP did and floatplane is still higher video bitrate than youtube at 1080p. Here is the mediainfo and exiftool readouts from both the youtube version (top) and the floatplane version (bottom).
  4. The reddit OP listed the format numbers of each file he downloaded with yt-dlp in the post.
  5. Youre completely insane. You think that "Any journalist" knows that its not a fundamental pillar of journalism when the industry ethics guidelines for professional journalists clearly states that it is You need to help yourself by keeping your mouth shut about things you clearly don't have the capacity, will or capability to understand. Buddy. You seem to think you know better than the Society of Professional Journalists about what their own ethics guidelines are.
  6. They definitely do ask airlines for comment after a plane crash...
  7. It doesnt at all. You clearly haven't read the discussion as to why i posted that. Hypocrisy at its finest. Like i said, Its a fundamental pillar of journalism. Hence why its included in the society of professional journalists ethics code. What an immature response. If you can't understand why that relevant then i can't help you.
  8. So youre saying disregard them if you want to take a jab at someone elses journalistic integrity without doing your own due dilligence. Got it...
  9. Yes it is...Youre very wrong on this. https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp "Diligently seek subjects of news coverage to allow them to respond to criticism or allegations of wrongdoing."
  10. https://www.spj.org/ethicscode.asp Its not an opinion. "Diligently seek subjects of news coverage to allow them to respond to criticism or allegations of wrongdoing."
  11. Its a well-established, fundamental pillar of journalism to reach out to a party you're making accusations of or to an offending party when covering a news story. Even the most local of local newspaper journalists do this. Let alone an outlet with a following with size of GN. GN made a choice to do this. Theyre not in the clear here either. Him drawing the distinction is very clear to any rational-thinking adult that its about making it clear it wasn't sold for the benefit of LMG's bottom line, and was instead auctioned for charity. Theres a very very clear ethical canyon between the two and thats whats being highlighted here. Its important that people don't think they sold it and pocketed the cash. Its also important that people don't jump to the sheer volume of conclusions that have been jumped to regarding this entire situation.
  12. A Maker channel I Would love to see LMG approach maker content, showcase/review some cool tools and DIY Tech. For example ive recently been building the MPCNC https://www.v1e.com/ which is a cool project id love to see Alex tackle (who would naturally be a great host for the channel). I think LMG could take a great run at a maker channel. Using tech to make cool stuff. Multi part project builds. Cool 3d printing/CNC educational and marketing content. Hacksmith/Adam Savage style multi part build vlogs. It would be very cool to showcase not only different tools but would be an ideal place for factory tours for more 'artisinal' tech products. Even stuff like soldering tutorials and a roundup of good better best versions of common tools. Also possibilities for things like case modding projects. Collab's with more makers and creatives outside of tech. Getting various YouTube creatives to mod cases and then some form of competition to win them perhaps. Someone like Adam Savage could do some insane case mod stuff given he built miniatures for star wars. This also provides the opportunity for more tools on LTT store as well as 3d print files and project plans. Why not even a 'how to paint your house' video sometime?
  13. A SFF build but one that is super discrete. Possibly in a case with a non-standard motherboard mounting or even a custom build case Replace easy MB I/O access with a high speed usb-C Dock or two. Do a roundup of the best desktop usb-c hubs not the laptop dongle ones.
  14. Get an old case and make a DIY Water chiller and dispenser inside it using consumer water cooling parts and a huge reservior. Stay hydrated homies.
  15. I think this has to be just for 'netbook' style thin and lights or tablets because this is functionally impossible for business and professional users.
  16. DIY Cloud for storage, file sharing, password vault, email/web hosting and media streaming with good open source mobile apps for access. Essentially replace google in your tech life.
  17. I just discovered that cable channels also have T Joint pieces. This solves my issue!
  18. See i utterly hate these. I have them now and they still somehow end up a complete mess. Youre right though the act of getting the cables through the pipe might be difficult depending how many youd need to run.
  19. Im struggling to see any bad points in the idea of running cable through PVC pipe joined to the underside of my desk with plenty of T-Joints for Cable ins and outs. has anyone tried this before and had any annoyances?
  20. I want to set up an offline or LAN only password vault. I was wondering if an old NUC might be the ideal candidate for something like this. Would love to see a video on how to set something like this up with good, stable, supported open source solutions after things are constantly being hacked. I tried a yubikey but to be honest it was severely underwhelming and just created more problems. The fact that all it really does is act as a master password without actually providing any kind of smart authentication is ridiculous. The fact that their software doesnt just check to see if the key is actually plugged into the system and automatically logs you in is annoying and the fact that so few companies actually support it makes it essentially a pointless purchase. Why there isnt a company out there creating consumer/prosumer hardware password vaults that are self contained and open source is beyond me.
  21. Does ducting your fans make a tangible difference to computer thermals AND room thermals? Is it worth it to duct your fans to either to another room, out of a nearby window or just directly into cavity wall air gaps. Over time do non-ducted fans in a closed room cause the computer to run warmer due to the ambient temperature in the room? Do the fans have enough static pressure to move air through the drier/AC tubing effectively? Can you duct your INTAKE fans to pull cooler air in from outside? Does it make a difference to thermal headroom? How does it affect the room temperature?
  22. Always wondered about rack mounting a consumer water cooling radiator or having a completely separate, self-built water cooling system in a rack. Just because the airflow could be fantastic and you take much of the risk out of the case housing all of the main components. The enterprise grade ones are very expensive and for a home lab could be a great addition. 480mm radiators are essentially the same size as a 19" rack. You could probably do some really cool stuff with a self-build external water cooling system that lives in a completely separate case in a rack taking up say 3 or 4 U's and can handle cooling for a main system and a storage server. Takes much of the risk out of the main systems and places it into its own case. You'd have much less size restriction so could in theory have a really good pump and decent sized reservoir.
  23. I ended up tuning mine with the utility above and got within 5% of the base 5950 cinebench score
  24. I tried youtube and found an older LTT video recommending this utility. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/clocktuner-2-1-for-ryzen-(ctr)-guide,1.html Went from about 8200pts in cinebench to 9200.
  25. I have a 3950x and when im hitting all cores with 3d rendering, my temps max out at about 58/59C With a core voltage of about 1.2V and it sits at about 4Ghz.I have Precision Boost Overdrive enabled in the creator mode in ryzen master but it looks like theres PLENTY of thermal headroom for further overclocking but the Ryzen Master OC doesnt seem to be taking advantage of it. Ive not looking into manual overclocking as this is a workstation that i use for actual work and would like the stability but id also like to be able to push this thing harder if i can. What are my options? Thanks
