  1. There's no setup yet. But it's probably going to look like a laptop with a big-ass USB hub and a bunch of webcams attached to it. I'll keep you posted.
  2. ManyCam would be $60/year for 20 cams (50 cams tier). I hate subscriptions. When did we stop paying for software upfront, once and for all? I'll look into OBS (it seems like it's limited to 8 sources max, but TBC). Thank you Do not hesitate if yo have any other suggestions.
  3. No. it's to monitor the growth/movement of plants over the course of days. A few images per minute (frequency still TBD). Not all cameras need to take pictures synchronously (actually I figured it would be better if they DO NOT take the images synchronously, in order not to risk saturating the USB bus, right?). Length of the USB cables should be under 2m each (probably under 1m each).
  4. Hey I have a project for which I would need to connect around 20 USB cameras to a Windows computer and have each camera take a picture every 5-10 seconds. Do you have any suggestion for a (free) program that could handle that? Thank you very much in advance for your help. Best, -a-
  5. Since Whatsapp is from Meta, it would be "nice" to at least have an option to store the backups on a FB account. What would be even better is to have the option to store them locally (for Android phones with SD cards) or select a cloud service (like Dropbox or whatever).
  6. Thanks for your reply. OK, so it'll be painful. I'll need to manually perform this migration procedure every time... Right?
  7. hey I'm a long term Android user. I also use several Windows PCs and a few macs (running macOS). I never owned an iPhone though. Now I recently received an iPhone that I need to use from time to time. But I won't definitively switch from Android to iPhone, I'll swap my SIM card from one device to the other depending on which one I need at the moment. Since, I've never been an iPhone user, I'm not familiar with Apple's limitations on iOS. Please let me know if there are any that I should be aware of. So far, my main concern is about Whatsapp... As far as I understand, on my Android phone(s), Whatsapp performs its backups onto my Google account. It seems like I cannot chose another option for the target of the backups (like another cloud service or an external storage device). As far as I understand, on iPhone, Whatsapp performs its backups onto iCloud. Again, it seems like I cannot chose another option for the target of the backups (like another cloud service or my Google account). So when I'll swap from Android to iPhone (and back), if I understand correctly, I'll end up in a shitty situation where my chats will be incomplete on Whatsapp. I'll see only the "Android part" on my Android phone and only the "iPhone part" on my iPhone. Is that right? Is there any way I could avoid this issue? I mean without going through an hour-long 20-steps process every time I swap my SIM card from one device to the other? Thank you very much in advance for your help.. Best, -a-
  8. Hey I saw Jake got a Samsung The Frame on his tech upgrade : https://storefront.throne.com/linusmediagroup/collection-5 However, I was wondering how he got his photos to look like paintings on the TV. I have the same TV but when I add my images they look nothing like that. Maybe there's some kind of "treatment" or filter I should apply first? For them to look like paintings on The Frame... Let me know. Also, if you have nice images that fit well on this TV and if you're willing to share, I'm interested. Looking at you Jake Bellavance Best, -a-
  9. Hey I'm reading that AMD 8700g will use PCIe4.0 (instead of PCIe5.0) which is not very surprising. Similarly, the 5700g used PCI3.0 while the 5000s desktop CPUs used PCIe4.0. Now apparently people are disappointed because of the following (GPU lanes below): AMD 8700g has 20 PCIe4.0 lanes distributed this way: - 8 lanes for the GPU (instead of the max 16) - 4 lanes for NVMe storage - 4 lanes for another NVMe storage port - 4 lanes for the chipset. Thus I was wondering how things were for the previous generation. I looked up specs of the 5700g but couldn't find any reliable information. They are all over the place. Some say it has 16 PCIe3.0 lanes, some say 20, some say 24. Tom's Hardware even mention the following: "the chip has 20 lanes of PCIe 3.0 connectivity (16 for graphics, four for the chipset, and four for storage) compared to 24 lanes of PCIe 4.0 found on the Ryzen 5000 models for the desktop PC." I don't understand how they get to 16+4+4=20 but I may miss something here. Please let me know if I do. Is there any way to figure out exactly how many PCIe lanes a CPU/APU provides? I'd like to know if the 5700g was already limited to x8 GPUs (when using the 1st M.2 slot for storage) or if it indeed could use x16 cards + x4 SSDs directly connected to the CPU. Thank you very much in advance for your help. Best, -a-
  10. I've been very satisfied with the BeQuiet Pure Base 500fx (~€130 comes with multiple aRGB fans). The 500dx (~€90) that has fewer fans IIRC and lacks a fan hub, makes a good alternative.
  11. Thanks a lot that's very useful. Have a great 2024
  12. Hey I'm not very familiar with bad sectors (logical/physical) and how they are handled. If I say anything wrong please correct me (so that I'll die a little less ignorant), thanks. AFAIU, in windows, we can use chkdsk to scan and potentially repair bad sectors on a volume (AFAIK chkdsk cannot do that on a blank disk with no defined volume). The sectors that are detected as bad are either fixed (logical bad sectors) or marked as unusable (physical bad sectors) if they cannot be fixed. This information goes into a list that is stored somewhere on the volume (a hidden file, I presume). Now, if the above is true, then I guess if the volume is deleted, then the list of bad sectors is deleted as well, right? Same thing if I decide to format a windows HDD and use it in Linux, for instance, after formatting it using a different filesystem. Then all the bad sectors would potentially be used again (leading to problems), right? Please let me know if this sounds right or if I misunderstood anything. Thank you very much in advance for your help. Best, -a-
  13. Thanks Can you elaborate a bit about why the drives need to be the same capacity? Is it "strict", like 2 different brands of 6TB drives won't play well with each other due to slight differences in capacity among drives? Or is it more "general" like I would lose some space building a RAID array with drives that have different capacities (e.g. a RAID5 array over 3 drives with 3TB, 3TB and 4TB for instance)? Also, how can I heck if the PCIe sATA card "plays nice" with ZFS? What does that mean? I'm not super familiar with ZFS. Thanks again
  14. Hi everyone I'd like to build a custom NAS out of spare parts that I have around (4th gen Intel CPU + MB, some DDR3, ironwolf drives, ...). I'll be using the NAS to store files that may be accessed by multiple users simultaneously over SMB. - both large and small files (pictures, videos, others...) - 1-20 users max Now I wonder what would be the best choice for the OS. I'm looking for something free, easy to use (intuitive) and manage (GUI!) and that is currently maintained. As I am relatively familiar with DSM (I own several Synology devices) I gave XPenology a try but unfortunately for me, it wasn't as stable as I hoped and the required technical knowledge is above what my brain can understand/remember (I easily forget things when I don't need them for months/years). I will be using a PCIe3.0 x4 sATA adapter (5 ports) since the MB doesn't have enough sATA ports for all my drives. Nice to have: - support for 4ports GbE PCIe NIC (to optimize simultaneous access to multiple users) - support for Tailscale Free (looks like TrueNAS/FreeNAS is the only free option here) Let me know what you would recommend. Thank you very much in advance for your help. Best, -a-
