  1. So I did some tinkering after the advice I got, would the following work well together? A bit confused about the RAM, as the description on the page I looked specifically said that it worked with skylake, is there any other factor that I need to look at in terms of compatibility, other than it being DDR4? Looked a bit at the motherboards, asus had an -a version too, that was a bit more expensive, but didn't really have more options that I would be interested in from what I could tell. Is there any really compelling reason to pick that over the -p version if I don't want to run SLI? Intel Core i7 8700K 3.7 GHz 12MB ASUS PRIME Z370-P Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2133MHz CL13 Vengeance LPX Svart Noctua NH-U9B SE2
  2. What kind of motherboard features is it that is worth looking out for? I don't plan on running sli ever. Only PCI-E slots that I use (other than GPU) is one for the wired network card, since the built in network thingy on my old motherboard died. And I have, in fact, heard that Dreddit is recruiting.
  3. Hi, I have planning to upgrade my PC for a long while now, and I think I'll finally have the time to pull the trigger. I have an aging pc from late 2012. Originally it had the following specs (pasting from the buy order): I have since bought one more HDD and one more SSD, and somewhat recently bought a 1080 graphics card. I was planning to upgrade the CPU, but sadly that is slightly more effort than just plugging in a new GPU or drive. I was planning to get the i7 8700k, a new motherboard (obviously), and an air cooler. My questions are mainly (unless there is something that I overlooked): Do I need to get new ram? (probably) Which motherboard would you recommend? which cooler would you recommend? (Thinking air, because priority number 1 is no hassle) Can i keep the PSU? As a bonus question, can I keep my same windows install if I switch motherboard, and if not, can I somehow transfer it? And for a bunus, bonus question, is there any good way to tell if the parts will fit together with the case/each other? I mostly play Eve online ATM, running one to 7 clients, which is putting some strain on my old cpu. I also occasionally play games like The witcher, Fallout, Divinity etc. No rendering/video processing work in sight. As for the budget, money isn't really an issue, as long as it's sensible purchases. I am not interested in paying for blinking lights and fancy brand names, but quality and low effort install/maintenance is what I'm looking for.
  4. Not sure what was going on, but if I switched it around so that I used DVI/HDMI on the other monitor, it worked. And with two HDMI it worked... so... well it's weird. Maybe you have to put them in a certain order or something? works now at least...
  5. Just tested, and with two HDMI cables it works fine... this is kinda weird.
  6. Hello! I just received my new fancy GTX 1080 Asus strix card, but I am having some issues. For some reason I can't have a DVI and a HDMI cable plugged in at once, it won't show both displays then. The HDMI cable days that it doesn't have any signal. If I remove the DVI cable however, I am getting a signal on the HDMI. Can you really not run one DVI and one HDMI at once, or am I being stupid somehow? Feeling very claustrophobic with only one screen D:
  7. Oki, thanks for the input I guess what I would specifically would like to know if there is any good free programs that can do the above, that have a good tutorial for noobs to follow? (preferably with tutorial link/recommendations)
  8. I'm sorry if I was unclear, I meant calculations as in more complex stuff, like i remembered making a program to calculate probabilities for texas hold'em, not as in 4+5 And the file editing as in saving variables and stuff to file. If i recall it was visual studio I worked most with before, is there a free version of that program available? Did a quick google search, but there appears to be quite a lot of versions of it, a bit confusing
  9. Hello! I would like to get back in to programming, just for fun. I took some classes in C++ and java in school, but that was like 7 years ago so I don't remember too much of it. I am looking for a free program that I can use to make very simple calculations with, and maybe do some simple file editing/data base stuff. I have also done some html/php stuff, but that was also quite a while ago. So my question is which program(s) should I use for this? Like I said I don't really have a practical things atm that I want to use it for, just tinker a bit for funsies.
  10. Interesting... Well, like I said, switched cable, network card, different computers, and also switched router. Have to have a specific type of router though because of our isp, so switched to another of the same type. So it's a bad router model? Any ideas of what could be done to solve it? Will be getting fiber from another isp in a month or so, but it has been bugging me for so long that I would like to learn why if nothing else. Another thing that was very interesting is that if I do ipconfig /release in cmd, i still have access to google.com, but no other pages that I have found. What's up with that? I have some ideas of what it could be, but I'm a noob at networking
  11. Hello. I have had some issues with my network for over a year now, and it has been bugging me all the time. Most of the time it's fine, but sometimes I get severe packet loss for long periods of time, and I haven't been able to find the cause. I have tested to run both wired and wireless, switch router and with different computers. I did some tracert thingy to google, and I saw some consistent packet loss to one of the first jumps in the list, and my question is are they significant of any issue, or how should I read it?
  12. Thanks for the replies guys! Just forgot to add, I will be playing at 1080. Will edit main post
  13. Hello! I have been out of the loop for a while now, but it's starting to become that season again, upgrade season! My current specs are: i7 3770 16gb ram (ram speed hardly matter right?) gtx 670 From what i have noticed it is in most cases (gaming) my graphics card that is the bottle neck of the system, and I have been starting to play with the idea of upgrading. My main reason for this is that I am super hyped for fallout 4 and would like a good experience with that game from the get go. I know that it is not released yet, but we got a pretty good idea of what it will take to run it from what I can tell. And by "good experience" i mean something like 45+ fps around 95% of the time, so nothing super fancy. I am not looking for a system to brag about, but I want a good gameplay experience. With that in mind, what are my current options for around $300 or less, and are we expecting something new to come out soonish, so that i better hold out for that? EDIT: planing to stick to 1080p as resolution for the foreseeable future.
  14. I tried to both reset, and get a completely new router, so doubt it is that, but haven't tried a vpn, will test that out! Edit:Tried the cyberghost service you suggested, but sadly that did not help with the problem. My guess is that it is an isp problem, but i don't know how to prove it/what to say to the isp since they apparently can't figure out what is wrong...
  15. So I wanted to give another crack at fixing this problem, so I am bumping the thread, and editing the first post with some new information.
