  8. The Linux kernel supports MANY devices, from i286 era hardware to today's hardware since the kernel includes drivers created by the community and by manufacturers themselves. Since these drivers are licensed in GPL2 (or compatible), they can legally be redistributed with the kernel. The reason a distro does not ship Nvidia drivers is because of their proprietary license, which is obviously incompatible with any GPL license since GPL prohibits redistribution with incompatible licenses. https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html
  9. This is the filesystem hierarchy standard of Linux, derived from UNIX. The idea is simple, each has its own specific purpose, meaning that files from different packages that serve the same/similar purpose will be grouped together. Ex. All essential system binaries/executable files goes to /bin/, all temporary files go to /tmp/, all user-owned files goes to /home/$USER/, etc. The root directory is not rigid, so you can add and remove directories in there, such as mounting an additional partition in /$partition_name. Also, partitions can be mounted in any directory as long as a directory can serve as a root directory exists. Ex: Mounting a partition in ~/$drive_name, you would use mkdir ~/$drive_name; sudo mount /dev/sdXY ~/$drive_name; sudo chown -R $USER ~/$drive_name That's a problem with the nautilus file manager, the GNOME team likes to remove useful features and users must rely on user-created extensions. Try the nemo file manager instead (from the cinnamon desktop) if you want a GTK file manager, else try KDE's dolphin. Again, Nautilus. Although, it sounds like you didn't search using the applications/activities panel in Gnome. Sometimes, distro maintainers make some weird design decisions. On most desktop environments, just open the font in the default font viewer and there is an install button. In KDE, it's the lower right corner of kFontView. Ah, yes.   11. That's the EFI Shell, part of your motherboard's firmware (The UEFI). Looks like the laptop does not/cannot boot into a simple UEFI interface.   13. The installer will install for UEFI if you booted it with UEFI, same with BIOS. If you're unsure, check if /sys/firmware when booted into linux has any files/directories related to EFI. UEFI is not required for dual booting, but recommended. It depends on the bootloader priority in UEFI/BIOS. In UEFI, there should be at least 1 EFI partition from your set of storage devices, your motherboard's UEFI will look in all EFI partitions. In those EFI partitions, every operating system you've installed will have its own bootloader placed inside. For example: if you've installed Windows, Windows will place its bootloader into an available EFI partition and tell the motherboard to boot it, and if you've installed linux after that, then linux will install its bootloader along side the Windows bootloader (if you've not told linux to format that partition) and thell the motherboard to boot its bootloader first. This can be changed by booting into UEFI/BIOS and changing the order of the bootloaders. Most likely yes.

  16. If you're looking to use a Linux install as a storage partition for Windows, you'll need a filesystem readable by both Windows and Linux without too much problem. The best solution I can come up with is WinBTRFS. This is a file system driver for Windows written by the reactOS team. It's pretty stable and most of the useful features of btrfs are in it already.

  19. The gnome file picker doesn't have support for file thumbnails. You'll have better luck with kde.
  20. All amd drivers are part of the kernel (AMDGPU for newer cards and RADEON is for older cards, automatically selected by the kernel), so you don't need to install any drivers. The one on the amd website is the AMDGPU-PRO driver, an optional proprietary version of AMDGPU. You can install the old the catalyst drivers (proprietary) if the others don't work.
