  1. Hmm, yeah, to make sure I have no conflict between the two I'm thinking about making a bootable Linux USB, set usb as the main boot device, and move the file from there. I'll probably try that.
  2. I'm in front of a classic "laptop too old to be worth repairing suddenly died, but the data on it was important can you please recover it ?" The laptop was running a M.2ssd (it's a lenovo 100s 14ibr), so I'm wondering how plug'n play it would be if just took it out, plugged it in my desktop, booted on my own ssd (I believe the laptop ran on an OEM version of Win, so the hardware change would probably caus activation problem), and just took the data from it and copied it to my hard drives. The laptop did not have a password, so would I be able to access it directly like I can access my own boot drive ? Is there anything special I should take care of considering the OEM ssd and the OEM windows Install?
  3. Hey! I don't really care about actually getting points as long as I actually help folding, but I feel like my output is quite low compared to my hardware (R52600 and RTX2080) when i compare it to what I see elsewhere. Is it just a problem with the way the points are calculated/displayed, or am I actually folding especially slowly? If that's the case, any Idea how to correct that?
  4. The motherboard doesn't really change anything as long as you don't plan on overclocking and if it as all the connectors/functions you need. I mean, you don't want to get a chinese knockoff on a thousands dollar build, but this is clearly good enough. M2 isn't necessarily better than sata ssd for games (as shown in a recent ltt video), but really (especially if you never had one), you should get your ssd asap, if possible at the same time as the other components since it will save you the hassle of reinstalling windows on it. It's totally game changer your old computer (if it's decently recent) with a ssd will probably feel snappier in everyday tasks with an ssd than this new one without one. Other than that, have fun building, playing, and, maybe more importantly, bragging te your friends ( no offense here, it's part of the game, we all do it! It's cool as long as you aren't obnoxious!), because let's admit it bottleneck or not, it's quite the rig that you have here!

  6. Hmmm. Sure. Not old enough to have tested a ton of them, and as of now, I never had a problem with any power supply, even noname brands. But from the various advice I got on forums when building PCs, I thought some were especially renowned for their reliability.
  7. Actually, minor problems in your hard drive might cause problems that can be temporary solved by a fresh install. A friend of mine had a broken HDD in his laptop and kept using it for months before changing it. He just had random crash every thirty minutes, and each reset of the computer stopped them for around a week, then they came back. He changed his HDD after some time, and it stopped. So it might still be the problem.
  8. The PSU is meh. Wattage is clearly sufficient, even a bit overkill, and to be honest it should be good enough if you already have it. Simply with such an expensive build, you might want to get a more reputable brand such as silverstone, EVGA or corsair. We also don't have the info about: your cooling : a 9900k runs hot. Makes sure to have something beefy or be ready for noise. your graphic card model : makes sure to get something good. I from my point of view, it means no blower design, because they are VERY noisy. You might want something especially silent if that's your kink, or especially beefy if you need every last drop of performance. your ssd : Take one. Really. Maybe not 2TB M2, but really, it's a waste of a build if you don't have at least a 512 GB. Even if you need to reduce your HDD size for that. A part from that, you're good. Your bottleneck will vary depending on the game, resolution and framerate (Graphic Card in 4k Ultra, CPU in 240fps, etc...) but you'll be as fine as you can be.
  9. I understand the problem, I only recently got a good connection. 6 month age 100kbs was a good day for me. But the issue is that if the reset isn't complete, nothing guarante you that the virus is actually suppressed, and not for example, considered a "system file" and left in place. I think a complete factory reset is the only way to be sure, but tbh, if it's that much of a bother to re-download, you might want to wait for someone else to confirm.
  10. Others will probably be able to give you more detailed advice, but if you "only left two games", that doesn't feel like a clean reset. You should make a complete and clean reset. The one that ask you again what privacy settings you want, which language you need, to connect to your windows account, etc... Avoid connecting to internet afterward, and try to use your computer. If it still appears, it might be a problem with your hardware or something else, but I can't help at that point and I don't want to say something too stupid. If it doesn't comeback, then connect to your router and once again, chek if it appear again. If it does, the it's probably coming from here. Oh, yeah, and make sure you have the latest windows update too.
  11. Do you know if it is possible, and if yes, how easy is it, to install windows on a Mac? Additionally, I started looking for old models, refurbished or brand new. I feel like putting a fast SSD in an old model and buying a new battery while they still are cheap in prevision of when it'll get too old might makes sense.
  12. My sister is looking for a new laptop. She is going to use it for light tasks (mail, office, web-browsing, etc...). She does not need the fastest, or the sexiest machine out there, but she doesn't like changing her machine, and would like to be able to do it as rarely as possible. So here is my question : in order for her to stay as long as possible on the same machine, which laptop would have your recommendation? I'm talking about lasting as long as possible without problems, as well as being as repairable as possible with easy to obtain parts (especially battery and storage), when these problems inevitably come. I'm kinda lost when it comes to that kind of things, since I've always been the kind of guy who just use a desktop for intensive tasks and use old laptops I get from friends until they completely dies when I need one. My understanding is that laptop are kinda like phones when it comes to durability these days, and rarely last more than two or three years, but is there exceptions to that?
  13. I just moved in the US, and I'm wondering which ISP is considered the most reliable, fast, good price/speed ratio, what kind of plans should I look for, and maybe (it wasn't the case in China where I lived for the last four years, but in was back when I lived in France) if some companies make discount or special offers for peoples using their services both for Internet and cell phones plans. Since that kind of things varies widely depending on wich country you live in, I figured I'll ask here since quite a big part of ltt's community is from the US. What do you guys think?
