MacBook 16-inch configuration
giova_dan replied to giova_dan's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Thank you all for your wise replies. I honestly didn’t know about the ASUS Pro Art laptop, and looking at the specs it really is a workstation laptop made for professionals and the price is good compared to MacBook. The thing that worries me a bit is the 17-inch format hence the dimensions and weight possibly and then the battery. I am sometimes using my laptop on the go, also in Airports and stuff and it is great to have a long lasting battery About going for a desktop: it also is a good option to take the base model and then opting for a beefy desktop, but right now I wouldn’t do this step because I do not know yet where I am going to apply for master and I also don’t know if when I find a job there will already be good desktops. About windows machines: the programs I use daily are ArchiCad; Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, InDesign; Rhino; sometimes Fusion 360 for CAM software and occasionally Blender importing my existing 3D Models from Archicad. Rarely I use 3ds Max, mostly just to convert 3d models into other formats. So I will mainly run MacOs I believe. The reason why I wasn’t considering much Windows laptops is because I was considering mostly these models: XPS 15 7590 ; Thinkpad X1 extreme gen. 2 since they are a thin and light alternative to MacBook although they are not so professional. And honestly I took a look at the Acer ConceptD 7 and the format, the materials don’t appeal much to me. Also the fact of having a good usable Trackpad is a big plus for me. -
Hello everyone! Right to the question: which configuration is for you guys more worth the price? At the end I will explain my needs and expectations. to keep in mind is the fact that if some components do not make a big enough difference than I prefer saving money. prices are written in euros according to the Italian prices. i7 - Radeon Pro 5300M - 500GB SSD - 16GB RAM : 2.799€ i7 - Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB - 500GB SSD - 32GB RAM : 3.399€ i9 - Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB - 1TB SSD - 16GB RAM : 3.299€ i7 - Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB - 1TB SSD - 32GB RAM : 3.639€ i9 - Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB - 1TB SSD - 32GB RAM : 3.779€ RAM: I am studying architecture as Bachelor student and I plan on keeping the laptop for a good 6 or more years at least. My use case scenario is: 3D viewport of programs like Archicad, Revit, Blender, Autocad, 3ds Max etc. ; rendering occasionally mostly on Blender; large file projects in Photoshop and tons of polygons in 3D programs (hence 32GB RAM is almost a must for me, also to “future-proof” it). CPU: must not be a multi-core monster but base and clock frequency also matters a bit (maybe sometimes does not make a big enough difference though) Storage: 500GB has always been enough for me with my old Windows laptop, plus I can run Bootcamp on a flash drive which is also fine GPU: I need quite a beefy GPU, I am not sure if the 5500M will make a huge difference in most 3D software but for 150€ I would do the upgrade. About the VRAM I am not actually gonna use more than 4GB I believe. Maybe in the future but I don’t think it’s a must have feature. thank you all in advance!

Architecture student laptop: gaming or “XPS-alike”?
giova_dan replied to giova_dan's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
@GeneXiS_X I have found this thread on the forum: Discussion thread: “help I can’t seem to find the right laptop for me” this laptop, the gigabyte Aero 15 SA would seem to be also the right option for me because of the weight, the awesome OLED display, the 1660ti, the cooling and the ports. The only problem is I can’t find any similar spec configuration in the shops here and they also don’t sell gigabyte. And Amazon here also doesn’t have this model of gigabyte. Do you know any other brand selling laptops with this kind of configuration? As I said I would absolutely love if Lenovo would make a Thinkpad with these spec (from the thin and light series of Thinkpad though) -

About the weight 2.2 is really fine. I would like not to overcome 2.5kg -

Architecture student laptop: gaming or “XPS-alike”?

What else would your recommendations be? I am prone to learning as much as possible. I know the Thinkpad P52 are very well recommended laptops but there are many other different brands that I don’t know about. -

I’m sorry I maybe didn’t see. Yeah it would make more sense to get a gaming laptop with a less gaming look since they’re performing a lot better. I have seen some options offered for gaming laptops converted in producer laptops. For example the MSI P65 Creator is the same as the MSI GS65 Stealth with cleaner brushed aluminium look and with no RGBs but I’m afraid they don’t offer much in terms of the display, I think they are still TN panels but with very good viewing angles. Otherwise I have seen I like the Acer Predator Triton 500 and they also recently made a creator edition that is called Conceptd 7. It’s basically the same chassis but coloured in pure white but the thermal solution and all components are the same of the Triton 500. Here the display is a 4K IPS panel with Pantone certification with 100% AdobeRGB. Other options such as the gigabyte Aero 15 XA (also has 4K OLED colour-calibrated display) or the Razer Blade 15 Advanced are unfortunately not available for me in Italy. Any more recommendation from everyone of you is very welcome. Also I would like to know what you people think about my dilemma if to choose a more power efficient laptop like the XPS 15 (and alike) or a gaming (but professional looking) laptop. Am I going to regret any XPS-alike laptop when I have heavier workloads to throw at it? -
HELP Ultra Portable RTX2080 Max-Q Laptops
giova_dan replied to Below27's topic in Laptops and Pre-Built Systems
Have you taken in consideration the Acer Predator Triton 500? I really like the form factor and the thermals are very good I saw, the screen is a good 1080p IPS 144Hz with good response time and it also has good upgradability with 2 M.2 slots pre-configured in RAID so very fast storage as well. Unfortunately though the components are on the other side of the lit, so next to the keyboard so swapping RAM or changing SSD you have to get the motherboard out. I don’t really remember if it also packs a 2080 Max-Q but I think so. I saw that even with some overclock and underfoot it shouldn’t thermal throttle. If it’s a thing to you it’s also one of those laptops that open with only one hand like MacBooks for example (to me it’s a huge benefit). Although personally I would choose the Razer Blade over any other laptops but it’s more pricey and Razer products are a bit of a surprise sometimes, you can maybe get a bad unit if you’re unlucky and the support from Razer is bad as I heard. -

Thank you very much for your knowledge. That was helpful for me! Based on your experience I would like as well to get a PC tower to put in my home and work from there with possibly 2x better performance and half the price. I am also now thinking about building a PC with good monitor real estate and good enough performance with a Ryzen last gen CPU and an AMD 580 since I saw that’s the best price to performance build you can get. Plus I could still buy a laptop that wouldn’t cost me too much money with a mid range discrete GPU, hopefully a Thinkpad cuz I love the build quality and the look of them. So far though my main use case at my uni was to go work there with my own laptop plugged all the time (my laptop had practically 2mins battery life) and often try and get feedback from colleagues or sometimes we also had to work together on a shared project. So I fear that if I get a “cheaper” laptop I would end up slowed down when I have big files on Revit. What you said about seeing colleagues with awkward huge laptops with RGB everywhere, I definitely don’t want that and I would rather sacrifice performance for this reason. Mainly because I want to keep my laptop for many years and eventually use it at work. I saw there are a few options which are “creator-friendly” like the MSI gs65 stealth or the Razer Blade 15 (they’re not selling it in Italy though) and also the Acer Predator Triton 500 is not a bad looking option. But still I would very much prefer the Thinkpad X1 extreme or XPS 15. About doing work on my university PC lab it’s not always that easy cuz they’re all the time busy and also they have slow Hard Drives and sometimes don’t perform good. Not to count the hassle of working on an external drive which often was a problem for me. I usually don’t do much rendering or if I do I prefer working on Blender since it’s free and I can use my model made in other programs and open it there so it’s pretty straight forward. And most importantly for final render I don’t use my own Hardware since I prefer to use a Cloud based solution called Rebus Render Farm which works very very good. Just to mention it: my laptop has an i5 3300U dual core with 2.5gHz all core boost clock and a GeForce GT 630m (very crappy) and I upgraded the ram to 12GB and my storage to 250GB 2.5inch SSD and it’s working just the minimum enough to get my work done. -
Architecture student laptop: gaming or “XPS-alike”?

About getting custom laptops although it would be really great for my work scenario I doubt I have the possibility of choosing one since I’m going to buy the laptop in Italy (I’m from Italy but I study in Austria) and here I can bet there aren’t many shops that do custom laptops and if they do they’re huge laptops with bad portability. Plus I have a discount if i buy it from “main” tech shops (for example Amazon or let’s say Walmart for example). -
I study architecture as 3rd year Bachelor and so far I’ve done all my work on a 6y. old laptop which is very limited in every aspect, also the display is a main thing to me. Budget is around 2000$. My main question is: are fancier non-gaming laptops worth the sacrifice in performance? I’m talking XPS 15 7590 or Thinkpad X1 extreme gen2, they’re stunning laptops, amazing display (OLED as well), lightweight and they still pack a GTX 1650 and 9th gen i7 or i9. With the same price there are options such as MSI P65, Acer ConceptD 7, with very good display options (IPS 4K) and top of the line graphics with RTX 2060 I intend to use them mainly to work with programs such as BIM modelling like Revit or ArchiCad and surely Photoshop, inDesign, Illustrator. A little bit of Blender and 3dsMax and also little bit of CAD like AutoCAD, Fusion 360 and Rhino. But mostly BIM programs So deciding points to me are the overall look of the laptop, weight around 2kg (4,4 pounds), display, battery life more or less and good enough performances.
