MVSde reacted to LAwLz in T-Mobile Austria Confirms They Stores All Customer Passwords In Clear Text - UPDATED
    Update:

So it is not quite as bad as storing the passwords in clear text, however it is still very problematic because:
    1) The passwords are encrypted. This means that if the case of a security breach, the attacker just needs to find the encryption key and it will have access to all passwords in clear text.
The proper way of storing passwords is as salted hashes. For more info, see this video called "How NOT to Store Passwords!".

    2) They still allow the staff to see parts of the users password.

    Original post:

    So this is fun...
T-Mobile Austria's twitter account announced that they are storing all customer passwords in clear text. Not only that, but they also allow their customer service staff to see the first four characters of it.

When told that this was very bad security practice, T-Mobile's response was:
And when another user chimed in, saying that in the case of a data breach all the users information including the passwords would be completely visible, T-Mobile replied with:

Actually, the entire twitter thread is crazy.
You can read the original here, or look at this screenshot below (because I suspect T-mobile will remove it soon)

Spoilers because the image is big.

As the twitter users points out, T-Mobile Austria is not a subsidiary of T-Mobile (USA). However, both T-Mobile Austria and T-Mobile (USA) are owned by the same company, Deutsche Telekom AG. Telekom also stores their passwords in clear text. So if the parent company does it (Telekom), and one of the daughter companies does it (T-mobile Austria), then it is not too far fetched to assume other daughter companies (T-Mobile USA) does it too.

I don't know what is worse. The complete incompetence of whoever implemented their password system, or the terrible ignorance and naivety of their twitter support staff.

EDIT: If anyone is super mad about it, there's already a Hot Fix Driver available, 361.82, which you can download here: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/914053/geforce-drivers/announcing-geforce-hotfix-driver-361-82/

For those of you unaware, driver version 361.75 just launched today. Along with support for Rise of the Tomb Raider and The Division, it also included BETA support for external GPU solutions via thunderbolt. That last part is the important one, however, as many (though not all) users are reporting the USB Eject icon to show your internal, PCIe GPU as a removable device:

Some users have reported imediate PC crashes, others said nothing happened. ManuelGuzman from Nvidia already stated:

This is part of the new BETA support for external GPUs however this message will be removed from the next driver.
So there you have it, before anyone goes crazy asking "omg wth is this?!". Nvidia is aware of the small issue (it's not harmful if you don't mess with it) and it should soon be corrected in another 370mb driver download.

What's funny is that if this was an ACTUAL feature instead of a bug, just like hot swapping HDs, Nvidia would be getting praised for it's achievements instead of getting hate for it's buggy software. Oh Humanity, y 're u alwayz so cruel........

Humble Bundle has been in a bit of a rough patch recently, and this shouldn't come as a surprise to most of us. Since starting Humble Bundle they have raised $65 million for charity to date. They've expanded upon the original Humble Bundle by offering more bundles and an online store, and increased its employee count. Unfortunately though, the last few Humble Bundles haven't been selling that well, so Humble Bundle had to let go 20% of its staff - 12 people.

Humble Bundle claims that their plans were too ambitious, and I'm inclined to agree. The last main numbered Humble Indie Bundle in September 2014 had around 200,000 sales, while the current one has around 140,000 sales and appears to be the lowest selling Humble Bundle to date. Remember, Humble Bundle use to have bundles that had 500,000 or more sales. That's a large step down. All I can say is good luck to Humble Bundle and good luck to those 12 people who lost their jobs. I wish the best for them and hope that they can get back on their feet soon.

MVSde reacted to Master Disaster in Windows 10 Internal Builds Reveal UI Refinements, New Icon Set and Animations
Microsoft is expected to release Windows 10 Threshold Wave 2 in November as the first major non-patch update to the operating system. It seems like we might be seeing some user interface enhancements in the upcoming update, along with a number of optimizations

Windows 10 is already running on over 75+ million devices, but that’s not something stopping Microsoft from refining the operating system. Latest Windows 10 internal builds suggest that Microsoft is continuing to improve the user interface and will bring in the enhancements in the next major feature update rolled out to Windows 10. New animations, updated icons, refined UI elements, and improved context menus are only a few of the improvements that you will notice in your operating system once the Threshold 2 is released in November.

Members of Insider program can experience some of these changes in Windows 10 build 10532 which introduced an updated Feedback app and context menus, however, not all are yet available in the public builds. Following are the expected UI changes spotted in internal Windows Insider builds.

The context menus are now coloured grey instead of pure white. Greyed out menus will be preferred by users who dislike having bright lights popping out of the screen, especially at the night time. Microsoft is also tweaking the size of menus along with other small changes. As mentioned before, Insider Preview 10532 also carried some changes to the context menu. Seems like this is a place where you would spot a few tweaks once the Threshold 2 is rolled out.

New icon set is another update being brought into the operating system. From Explorer to Win32 control panel, you will now notice new icons while some of the older icons have disappeared from the list. Microsoft is focusing on redesigning some very old elements of the UI in this update.

Apart from these changes, Windows Store also gets a fade away animation which appears when you open / close the apps, similar to the Windows 10 desktop apps.

    http://wccftech.com/windows-10-internal-builds-reveal-ui-refinements/

    My Thoughts

I'm looking forward to the new update (whatever they call it) as when you spend some time with Windows 10 you do begin to find some little quirks and flaws which do need addressing. I'm not saying its bad but it really does need some spit and polish to make it into a great OS (which I'm sure it can be), I'm only hoping they don't waste time with UI and animation tweaks without spending a lot more time polishing everything up.

Let's recap for a second. On April 11th, 2014 Marty O' Donell, the man behind the music of Halo and Destiny, was fired from Bungie without cause. Bungie then chose not to pay for vacation time that Marty had not used unless he waived his equity interest. Of course, Marty sued Bungie.
(If you want to know the complete, very long story, click on the Venture Beat article, which is source #2.)

Fast forward to September 4th, 2015 and Marty won the lawsuit. Bungie now has to pay $142,500 to Marty. In addition to this, Marty also gets to keep his "considerable" amount of stock in the company. Unfortunately though, Marty cannot publish any music from Destiny unless he gets Bungie permission, and let's be realistic, that's never going to happen.

Seriously, good. I'm glad that Marty won the lawsuit. I use to love Bungie a lot, but they've changed too much - for the worse - over the last few years. Them firing Marty was the last straw for me. So to Bungie, HAH, that's what you get, and to Mr. Marty...

Holy fuck-balls that is a high ISO. Given this camera's relatively low resolution of 2.26 megapixels, this thing is definitely designed to shoot Full HD video and nothing else.Given the high price of this camera, i can really only see it being used in films or documentaries. In those areas, particularly in wildlife documentaries, this thing can be a game changer. No longer will film makers need to use lights or night vision to be able to film wildlife or events at night. Now they can capture that stuff in a much more realistic way that should really improve the quality of the films that they produce.

With the launch of Skylake around the corner, motherboards makers are revealing what they have to offer and today, we get to take a look at one from MSI. The MSI Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium Edition is one of MSI's top end motherboards. Looking at the board itself, we can see it runs on socket 1151 to support the upcoming Intel Skylake processors. Under that massive heatsink it has 16 phase pwm titanium chokes, 4 dimm slots using DDR4, that's was first seen with the Intel X99. Power for this board, we have our main 24 pin, follow by 8 pin + 4 pin. On the slots, there are 4 physical x16 slots, not sure if it supports 4-way SLI or CFX, but from the spacing of those x16 slots, it might be a chance that it does. Now if it does, then 2-way will run at x16 and 4-way at x8. Out of the 4, only 2 of them have metal protective plates and to provide extra power to those slots, there is a 6 pin peg connector. For storage, it has 8x SATA III ports, with 2 pairs that's part of SATA Express and 2x M.2, but there are no U.2 connectors on this board, maybe MSI will provide or sell U.2 adapters separately or something. For overclocking MSI has provided a mini add on board called the OC dashboard (that mini card at the top right corner) where users can adjust their cpu's BCLK and CPU ratio. On it there is also slow mode switch, Go 2 bios button, fully discharge, as well as a power and reset switch. Color scheme for this board unlike their pervous OC line which features a yellow/black layout has been replaced with what looks like silver/black and that black stripe running across the board, representing a lightning bolt.

Its the 29th in half of the planet right now and Windows 10 is getting in the hands of a lot of eager users. So much so that CDN's services are getting hammered because of it.

Streaming Media is citing internal sources and is saying that Microsoft has reserved up to 40 Tbps with all of the key CDNs which is a massive amount of bandwidth. As of July 28th at 1PM ET, Microsoft is said to already be consuming over 10 Tbps and seeing that all regions are not yet online for deployment, it's only going to go higher.

As a comparison Apple events uses up to 8Tbps, straining networks around the planet and given that Microsoft has reserved 40Tbps it is expected to be five times bigger that any Apple event, this measure puts in perspective that the deployment is no joke to Microsoft and could be the biggest deployment Microsoft has ever done until today, it wouldn't be surprising if by the 30th the numbers of Windows 10 users get as high as dozens of millions

    Source: Neowin

if you wondered why the rollout is staged this is exactly why, also just to clarify 10Tbps is bits not bytes if it were bytes it would be 1.25TBps

MVSde reacted to GoodBytes in Windows 10 has been, or will be downloaded today for those who reserved - Don't delete C:\$windows.~BT
In the case anyone notices that their C:\ drive just got smaller in terms of free space. The Windows 10 reservation software has already downloaded Windows 10 setup for the upgrade on July 29th, for many. Others will be downloaded today. If you were late to the reservation, or Microsoft servers are too busy, or you are not online for a while, you'll get the OS update the 29th, or even later on, possibly reaching a week or so after Windows 10 has been released.

Windows 10 upgrade setup is located in: C:\$windows.~BT. It could be in a different drive if there insufficient space on C:\
So, if you notice this folder, and wonder what it is. Don't delete it. (The folder might be marked as 'hidden').

Microsoft will unlock and activate the Windows 10 install at midnight tonight. However, the entire distribution is in waves, which can up to a month, if you are unlucky.

The size of the folder is bigger than expected, as it includes large day 1 patch. Once completed, the folder size will be ~6GB.

    Source: http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/28/9055065/windows-10-pre-download-windows-7-windows-8-pcs

    Important Note:
If you see that Windows 10 is downloaded but it not upgrading this is because:
It is being deployed in waves, to limit damages from Microsoft side if something is discovered.
Your system is not Windows 10 ready driver wise. This means that your system is OK, but some driver(s) have bug(s) which will break the Windows 10 experience to you. Once the manufacture releases a fix, then your Windows will be ready to install and enjoy. To know which one affected you, the "Get Windows 10" app, will tell you which ever is the case. It will tell you either:
It is being deployed in waves (specifically)
or We're validating your PC. (clicking in "More information" will tell you that Microsoft is working with partners to make sure your PC is ready) In this thread, it is discussed on how to force the install.
