  1. Hi, After Google Photos is no longer "free" (they want to scrape your data and pay for the privilege), Dropbox in no longer good, and OneDrive is a piece of ****, I decided to try Nextcloud on my on server. Config Hypervisor running: - FreeNas with Z1 zfs - Ubuntu VM running plex, sonarr, homeassistant, Nextcloud (installed on its own SSD) Usually Nextcloud installs in the localhost file system, but it is a VM and I want to keep my data on my NAS. I changed my data folder location to a mount that links the VM with my NAS (same mount I run my Plex, Sonarr and other related programs). After moving the data folder I get this error "Nextcloud your data directory is readable by other users". I solved that by editing server/config.php and adding 'check_data_directory_permissions' => false, . How safe is my setup given I bypassed this option? And who are other users? Is it referring to local users, I am the only person using this server, and yes I can browse the files stored by Nextcloud using SMB. I set up Nextcloud with https and let's encrypt, that I can access through a DDNS. Is this setup safe ish? Also, how do I get rid of or block the http connection, if I go to the VM ip using http is get --- Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page. (just delete the www /html/)? Thank you!
  2. Hi, I'm running wmware esxi 6.7 for about 3 years on consumer hardware (intel i7 6700k, Gigabyte Z170M-D3H, 24GB RAM, 250GB SSD). I'm running esxi of an 16GB microsd card, the virtual machines are stored on the ssd. I added an PCIE sata3 card with 10 ports with 8 hdds for mass storage (4TB each). I added the PCIE on the pass through list. I'm running FreeNas 11.3, Pihole, home assistent and a win 10 machine. Most ram (16Gb) is assigned to FreeNas thats running (Plex and other plugins). Windows has 4GB of ram and has some usbs pass through. Every thing is running good for the moment. Only one incident, one hdd died, replaced it, resilver went ok. Performance is ok, 130 Mbps transfer over local network from FreeNas. The only change I want to make is move the plugins from FreeNas to standalone VM, file permissions are killing me. Have fun!
  3. Hi, Can someone with some FreeBSD skills help me update my plex server. Problem (long story time): A few months ago my server was close to full, less than 20% left, I had 2 more hdds left for spares so I decided to add them, bad idea, I had to redo the raidz1 array, move all the data (12Tb) on other hdds, reinstall freenas etc. In the past I used a win10 vm in freenas but its not that stable, so I decided to install first Vmware ESXI, install FreeNAS and win10 as a vm. Much more stable, for the windows install, bad news for FreeNAS. I only have 3 plugins in FreeNAS - Sonarr, Plex Media Server and Transmission I started with the latest version of FreeNAS 11.2 U5 - problems - slow transfers speeds, high cpu usage, plex would not load metadata for my library, sonarr had problems getting to the files etc. (unstable experience). Deleted 11.2 U5 and installed 11.1 U7 - last version of 11.1. Everything was good except one plugin PLEX. Skip here for problem: I can't install plex from main menu. I get [MiddlewareError: Failed to download http://download.freenas.org/plugins/9/x64: HTTP Error 404: Not Found] Exception Location: ./freenasUI/plugins/plugin.py in download, line 120 I found a tutorial to manually create a jail and install plex - doesn't work - pkg install plexmediaserver works, but something is missing ( service doesn't start, plex folder with logs is missing) This Downloaded plex.pbi from the FreeNAS website. Installed, works but it's version plexmediaserver-1.9.6.4429-amd64, update fails, manually trying to update with mstinaff/PMS_Updater works, it reports as latest version. Plex and FreeNAS still report version as 1.9.6.4429. My Roku doesn't want to connect to Plex because the version is too old. P.S. I have 12Tb of data, I can't switch freenas versions unless I backup. 11.2 feels slow, high cpu usage Any help? Rig- CPU - Intel i7-6700K RAM - 24GB DDR4 (2x8+2x4) PCIE x4 10 sata3 card 8 x 4Tb Seagate HDD - Raid Z1 120Gb SSD storage for EXSI (win10 vm) 8Gb SD card for FreeNAS
  4. WAN and one device are CAT 6 and one device is CAT 5, the drops in speed are random on any type of cable. I used a mix of premade cables and a few that i made myself (same thing). I even tried cleaning the sockets with isopropyl alcohol and a brush. Didn't find anything in the log about link speed, i would post it but it has some personal data (MAC, IP, names).
  5. Yes, sometimes they work normally at 1 Gbps.
  6. Hi, A have a problem that I can't fix with my home router, a Asus RT-AC68U. It randomly negotiates connection at 100Mb/s instead of 1Gb/s. ( happens after the device or the router reboots). If I replug the cable or re-enable the connection it sometimes goes to 1Gb/s and stays there. I tried different wires, ports and devices, it even does this for the WAN connection, I replug the cable a few times and it works. Also tried different firmwares, stock and merlin (now 384.4 from merlin) and a few factory resets. Any ideas? Thanks, Gabi
  7. Hi, 2 sticks of ram are better in your case, less stress on the memory controller and free slots for an upgrade later on.
  8. Its for a small business, and they want it for "just in case" someone leaves with a laptop. There are a lot of ifs, laptop has to be powered on, connected to the internet, the program running in the background. Bad idea to start with, a company controlled cloud storage solution might be better.
  9. Hi, Did anyone came across a program that can wipe securely predefined folders. Something that has a list like Teamviewer and can be executed from outside the network. The laptops run Windows 10 Pro with normal user and password not active directory. Thank you!
  10. Hi, is windows showing usable 3.24 GB ? is it a 32bit OS because that is limited to 4GB minus the ram taken by the graphics card. In this case you need to reinstall the OS and use a 64bit one. Check the BIOS.If Bios is not showing the full 8gb it means that the stick of memory is not compatible with the laptop. Take a screen shot from AIDA64 with the memory tab.

    Raid 5 Volume

Thanks ChineseChef 1. I am looking for a raid card, but not a lot of cards support 4TB drives and are available in my area. 2. No I am not stuck with windows, I was looking at FreeNas with raidz, the only think I lose is the ability to stream games from steam(not that important but i wanted the option). 3. From what I read you can move the volume created with windows software raid if that OS or hardware fails. I am waiting for the resync to finish - its at 49% - to test the read/write performance and the cpu usage. If I write a large file now the CPU usage is around 5-10% mostly on one core. I attached some ATTO benchmark runs, its not looking good... Would a Fujitsu 5/6 SAS LSI MegaRAID SAS2108 PCIe 2.0 work? (https://www.vexio.ro/accesorii-pc/fujitsu/47348-raid-controller-fujitsu-5-6-sas-lsi-megaraid-sas2108-pcie-2-0/ --- use translate) is about 200 Euros First is single drive in AHCI mode, second is the current windows software raid 5.

11% resynching ... at this rate it will be done in a week
  13. Hi, I need some advice on building a storage server for in home use (bulk storage, Plex, FTP server, personal files backup) The parts I've got: CPU: Intel I7 6700k (a bit overkill but i may do some rendering in the future) Motherbord: Gigabyte Z170 D3H (http://www.gigabyte.com.ro/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5486#ov) Ram: 16GB DDR 4 Boot drive: Samsung 950 Pro m.2 256Gb Storage: 6 x 4Tb Seagate SSHD (i've got 2 more but the motherboard has only 6 sata connectors) Power: Corsair RM 550W First thing i tried is Windows 10 and Intel Rapid Storage for the raid. The first bump was that i had to install Windows in RAID mode not AHCI (IRST doesn't work in this mode) and that limits the boot SSD performance alot (random writes go way down) but still usable, I used the wizard to build a RAID 5 volume, it took 4 days to initialize, and the results were terrible - 20-30MB write speed. I've tried to disable Write-Cache Buffer Flushing and select different cache modes but nothing worked.(stripe size 128kb on my first attempt and 16kb on my second on a smaller volume 100GB). Now I am trying Windows Server 2016 and building a software RAID 5 (resynching reached 10% in 12 hours) but the writes are a bit better even with the resynching not complete but it still drops to 40MB after a few GB of writing. I need to choose between a fake hardware raid from intel and a software raid from windows. I will like to try more options but the initializing take a lot of time. I need some advice. The picture shows writes on windows software raid after a few GB. Thanks, Gabi P.s. One second problem is that access to my shared folders on my other PC comes and goes at random - the network is stable and no changes are made. (Windows cannot access \\ComputerName)
