herb got a reaction from problemsolver in odd frametime behavior after gpu upgrade
okay so at this point i have done A LOT of tests to figure out what is wrong.  ill save you the whole story because i just wasted like 4 hours of my life but pretty much my rx 6700 xt is not running at its rated clock speeds.  when i play a game like star wars battlefront II the gpu only runs at 1000mhz.  its supposed to run at 2600-2700. when i manually input the clockspeeds in the amd control panel the performance does get better but its still not perfect. im still noticing drops into the low hundreds of mhz when the clockspeeds are set manually. im also still getting some frametime issues when loading in more open scenes but my 1080 ti never had this issue.

my friend who i live with has a 6600 xt and i decided to test my card in his pc and nothing is wrong with it, it is just my computer. im glad im closer to figuring out what is wrong but please help me.

herb got a reaction from PDifolco in Strange first gen intel board? how does this ram config work?
hi so recently i bought an Asus p7f7-e ws supercomputer motherboard because i like to collect weird hardware of the past. the thing that drew me to this board in particular is that it is a first gen motherboard that natively supports both core and xeon cpus and ECC RAM on a consumer platform. But the #1 thing that made me buy this is the REALLY strange ram setup. This motherboard has 6 ram slots, that might not sound strange but this isn't an x58 board. These are lga 1156 cpus which means they only have ram channels for 4 dimms. My question is how does this work? if the cpus were never designed to handle this many dimms how did asus make it work? id love to know for the sake of preserving the history of this board.

i am reasonably well versed in computer hardware so i do have a theory of my own. my theory is that the blue slots on the motherboard function like you would expect, 2 dimms per channel for a nice dual channel setup. my theory for the black slots is that they work in pairs. So the pairs of slots would almost function like a single stick that is a dual rank dimm. this might not be the case of course since dual rank dimms would have existed back then but that my best guess as to how they could allocate more to less.

Please let me know your thoughts as this is a super cool piece of history!!

with all the stuff going on with facebook right now and the fact that oculus wont exist in a very short time, what is going to happen to the quest 2? will the rebranded oculus company under facebooks "meta" name continue support, or is it just going to become a big white paper weight?

ddr5 functions completely differently from ddr4. its not just a density and clock speed increase. it is fundamentally better.

unlike ddr4, ddr5 has a dual 32bit bus allowing for lower wait times on sending info to the cpu. this also allows the cpu to receive more data from the ram and more often. the specs on ddr5 besides the density may not be super impressive but this change makes the latencies and the clockspeeds less important when comparing to ddr4

realistically modern cpus over 8 cores dont make a difference in games and multithreading in games still inst perfect. once multithreading is near 90-95% scaling a 12core cpu might make sense but for now if you upgrade to a 9900k you'll be good on cpu power for years to come

long story short, i put this cooler on an fx 9590 and it barely hit 60 degrees! i have struggled to find a cooler to quench the inferno of the 9590 but this cooler has out done itself

computer hardware is rather resilient to breakage. as long as you dont slip with a screw driver and your giving a light amount of care there is no way you could break it. not even tightening the screws too much could break it because they probably have springs that would stop anything like that. i would 100% trust a novice to take apart a gpu and repaste and not break anything.  that is assuming its one of those cards with only 4 screws but even if it had more the process is the same.. also dried paste even if it has perfect contact would cause a bottleneck.

herb got a reaction from whm1974 in budget "x89" motherboards any good?
if you look at the listing for these combos, they specifically mention that the CPUs and RAM are used and that they are only providing a limited 1 year warranty for the cpu and ram. whether they will actually honor the warranty is unknown but when it comes to the cpu and ram it is all legit.

if its a prebuilt then going into the bios probably wont help. most prebuilts dont allow overclocking (cpu, ram, etc...). unless this is a special prebuilt from lenovo your wasting your time, also if xmp worked on your old ram it should work now.

ram generally doesnt create may issues. as already said as long as clock speeds are fairly close (they dont HAVE to be exactly the same) it will work no problem. AXMP and XMP will be auto set at the lower ram speed if the stick are different. you also dont need ram that is the exact same model. you could have 2x8gb vengence and then 2x8gb trident z and as long as the speeds and latencys are pretty close you wont have issues.
