The transformers inside usually have a hum when they first energize, but that should go away after a few seconds. Generally once the magnetic field inside the transformer stabilizes and/or the transformer warms up. The hum is low (literally 60hz) so it's not like the 6000-15000hz coil whine you get from PSUs or graphics cards.

Depends on the UPS - some of the better ones are quieter when in operation, but most of them make some kind of noise when draining or charging.

Whether that's a problem would depend on how loud the hum is. Considering it should only ever have to charge after a power outage, I can't imagine it would be a big problem.

The APC BX1400UI UPS is a viable option (click here for UK website) paired with these cables for each of your monitors. I'm not very good at researching voltages, so make sure you don't fry your US equiptment with UK equiptment

According to the two reviews, it hums while charging. Is that normal for a  UPS? Seems kinda strange to me.

From what I've seen, Amazon Basics isn't a Dollar store brand, and some of their things aren't that bad. But I would be weary with things like UPSs...

Years ago (2009-ish) I had an old system with some kind of problem, would only boot around half the time and couldn't figure out why.  So after a couple of cocktails one day I decided that I should break it down, clean and re-seat everything and see if that helped.

So, while putting it back together I found myself having some trouble putting the RAM chips back in and having to use a fair bit of force, but it all clicked in fine so no problems, right?

Ever tried to turn on a PC with the RAM chips installed backwards?

I'd never seen smoke pour out of a motherboard like that, and still haven't since (and just lost a PSU to an exploding chip a few months ago which tripped all the breakers in my flat). Turns out I'd acually snapped off both the little plastic tabs that sit in the RAM socket I'd put so much pressure onto them when trying to force the chips in, and completely fried the mobo, CPU and RAM in the process.

Obvious moral of the story: Don't drink and build PC's folks!

That's pretty cool, they're cheap, but I know nothing about UPSs. AmazonBasics stuff is usually okay, so I'm optimistic. I'm just going to follow this thread.
