Bladzy got a reaction from Wictorian in Speed Reader
I'd merge it with the previous word. Also, make sure to run your tkinter gui in a seperate thread, this will make your experience smoother and more responsible (the window or additional features like buttons may hang if both your gui and main code run in the same thread).

Bladzy reacted to trag1c in Dumb Question that could 2x CPU Perf.
What you're thinking of is what is called SIMD or Single Instruction Multiple Data. This is a dedicated set of hardware registers on the CPU exposed through instruction set extensions. For x86 based processors this has been around since the first version of SSE which came out in 1999 (IIRC). This allowed developers to apply the same instruction to 4x 32bit single precision floating point numbers. Subsequent versions expanded this with more instructions to allow for 2x 64bit double precision floating point numbers or 2x 64 bit integers, 8x 16bit short integers, 16x 8bit characters.
Other instruction set extensions exist for different instruction architectures such as NEON for ARM based devices. Additionally, we have even more SIMD extensions for x86 such as AVX512 which has up to 512bit registers.
SIMD has been the bread and butter for game developers for quite some time now. Every bit of vector or matrix math is performed using these registers since the performance increase is absolutely massive (10x over regular scalar math in some cases). Although that is not always the case since performance is purely implementation and task specific. You could just as easily attain half the performance of scalar math if you use SIMD in an application where it doesn't make sense or implement it poorly.

Bladzy reacted to WhitetailAni in staffroll.bin editor Python script not working
I left an Issue report on the GitHub page and here's what the author said:
It seems that it's an issue with how I edited staffroll.bin and the script is confused as to what it's supposed to do. I'll try tomorrow - it's 10:46 PM right now.

Bladzy got a reaction from WhitetailAni in staffroll.bin editor Python script not working
I only read the script briefly, but what seems to happen is that in line 156 "struct.pack()" is getting either to much or not enough arguments. Since it's called on a per line bases, as defined in "saveStaffrollBin" it's likely just a formatting mistake inside of the text file you edited (maybe indentation, maybe missed a colon?) You could just create an incremental counter inside the for loop on line 431 in staffroll_lib.py and print it out to see what line it worked on before it crashed. So we don't have to search the culprit manually. (the code could look sth. like this, changes in bold)
line_cnt = 0
for line in lines:
line_cnt += 1
print(line_cnt)
if line is None:
f.write(b'\xFF\xFF\xFF\xFF')
else:
line.saveToBinFile(f)
Or you can catch the exeption and ignore it (via try- except block). But this may lead to some lines missing, maybe the conversion won't even work.
Unfortunately I am really tired and will not be back until in like 15hrs. So I can't try to help in the mean time.

The Castle coolers are an excellent option. It should be noted that our white Castle coolers are off white, so they may not go with builds that have a "pure white" color theme.

What about a DeepCool Castle 240EX White? At least wehere I live it's priced relatively competetive ~100€. They have great RGB "compatibility", supporting asrock, asus, gigabyte and msi software. The fans illuminate evenly and the cooler itself is quite an eyecatcher. I own a similar model, lemme share a pic (yes my side panel could need some cleaning... one day... 😅)

Oh I did not even realize you are in possession of a desktop rig alrdy. In that case I'd go with the Idea Pad 5 14alc05 that Darkseth linked above. Its battery processor combo really is appearing, and besides that it got everything I'd personally want from a laptop. Connectivity, fhd screen, enough ram and storage. For presentations additionally to the HDMi the usb-c port may be interesting on this unit. It supports power delivery and display output. I think it will serve you well. You will have to install windows and amd's adrenalin software yourself, but that's doable. As far as CNC control goes, honestly I don't know what's possible on laptops. I can imagine that wiring it will get a little tricky.

Bladzy got a reaction from spooky.gray_ in What can I do with this setup?
Good call, but if you are going with that CPU (3 3100) and overclock it you need to buy a better cooler. With stock cooler it can be overclocked np at 4.2 ghz, but if you want to push it higher safely and stable you will need better cooling. (I biuilt a system with that chip lately, it really is good value and overclocks like a charm)

Judging by specs, price and lastly looks (729,00€):
https://www.otto.de/p/captiva-power-starter-r59-110-business-notebook-39-6-cm-15-6-zoll-amd-ryzen-5-500-gb-ssd-1301721267/#variationId=1301721268
Or this one if you want some more storage (769,00€):
https://www.otto.de/p/captiva-power-starter-r59-125-business-notebook-39-6-cm-15-6-zoll-amd-ryzen-5-1000-gb-ssd-1301647331/#variationId=1301647382
But the model I'd take for the money is probably this one (799,00€)
https://www.otto.de/p/hp-15-dk1250ng-notebook-39-6-cm-15-6-zoll-intel-core-i5-geforce-gtx-1650-ti-1000-gb-ssd-1295442683/#variationId=1295442684
It comes with a decent GPU so you can do gaming aswell. All its specs are on par or better than the ones above, at roughly the same price. If you don't mind the gamery look you should give this one a try. But there is one drawback, you do not want to use this unit on battery... 😄 (but if thats no top priority, hell yeah go for it, at its current price of 799€ its a steal.)
In case you are wondering about those recommendations:
Programming can use up quite a bit of RAM (depends on the application though). I prefer having at least a fhd display, makes text so much nicer to read! I personally also make quite a lot of use of multiprocessing thats why I like those CPU's. Having more than 500GB of storage is crucial (at least for me). A backlit keyboard really is comfort worth having (trust me, you will miss it if you own a backlit keyboard). The GPU in the last one come at preatty much no extra cost and is a bonus and since I always go for the biggest value that would be it.
I don't like recommending e-waste. Thats why I stay away from thin and lights that have been stripped of their performance and connectivity (ports). Let alone chrome-books...

Bladzy reacted to PiberiusWilde in Would you consider this budget laptop? Please share your thoughts. :)
If you buy it now the yes. It's a 'okay' value. But in 2021 ehh.... and with the arrival of 3rd gen Ryzen. I think going for like 4300U would be better. TBH it depends on when the 5xxx mobile cpu laptops launch. If they launch on the holiday season then there's a chance that in January 2021 the price 4xxx mobile cpu laptops will be way down.

Well I guess there are some bad apples in between ^^. Anyways I'd always consider doing software related repair myself simply because it won't cost you money, "just" time to troubleshoot.

Bladzy reacted to GameMaster2030 in Pi-Hole Setup Tutorial
For anyone who also cares about privacy I would recommend setting up DNS over HTTPS, that way all your requests are encrypted. You can find the official guide here.
Also if you want to use your DNS server away from home you can follow this official guide here. But setting it up to have a VPN and DNS server there are some changes that we need to do that don't follow the guide.
Under "installation", you can skip the install pi-hole part since you should already have installed pi-hole. (For more experienced linux users: the port of the openvpn server can be anything. But make sure the port isn't already in use or that your ISP blocks it when port forwarding. Can be handy to bypass port blocks by using port 433 or 80) Skip finding the IP under "Setup OpenVPN Server" and change `10.8.0.1` to the ip of your RPi(Raspberry Pi) which you already have if you followed Jake's guide. Before creating an user follow this: Run command: `openvpn --genkey --secret ta.key` Edit the config file and add this line: `tls-auth ta.key 0`
(This adds an encryption layer between the client and the server, so some extra security) You can probably skip "Firewall Configuration" since Raspbian doesn't have a firewall pre-installed and you also don't have installed any Follow these parts of "Optional: Dual operation: LAN & VPN at the same time" Add this line to your `/etc/openvpn/server/server.conf`: `push "route 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0"` but change `192.168.2.0` to your subnet which you can find in your ip, for example if your ip is: `192.168.1.43` you replace `192.168.2.0` with `192.168.1.0` and with `192.167.8.28` you replace it with `192.167.8.0`. But if your IP is for example `10.8.0.7` you'll probably need to replace the whole line with `push "route 10.8.0.0 255.255.0.0"`. Run this command: `pihole -a -i all` After this port forward `1194` or the port you decided to use on your router, you can find guides online. Let me know if you find a mistake in this.

Bladzy got a reaction from Protegit in CPU Temp spikes
Hello just wanted to post an article with the exact same title as yours before I realized there is a relatively new one. ^^
I hope you don't mind if I post here, but I've got a very similar problem with a Ryzen 3 3100. It on idle is temp spiking 24/7. Spikes are usually around 10C and even moving the mouse brings temps up by 10. The stock cooler with its thermal pad is being used, and this behavior occurs with and without overclock applied. Under load temps idle out nicely, but without load on 1-2% utilization the temps spike every 3 secs identical to your first picture (after your test was over). Even tho temps while on idle are in the safe range (40-50C) I can't imagine this being healthy at all, since this is literally a physical principle being used to destroy materials.
I've read this would be relatively normal for ryzen 3 cpus. But I'd like to be assured if anyone reading this knows for sure. I'am just a little nervous since my ryzen 5 2600 does'nt behave like that. This is the first time I encountered sth. like this.

I loaded the xmp profile back on yes. Well I have to use the Icue software to customize my keyboard and headset, But I do not need the mwmonitor, so I wont install that.

Bladzy reacted to ddennis002 in 3000mhz to 3200mhz ram overclock??
I would do a manual flash of 2.0 then a manual flash of 3.5 as the website states its not recommended to go to 3.5 with pinniacle ridge.
I always manually download and manually flash my BIOS that way I know it gets done right.
As for the Amd all in one driver download and install it before flashing. This contains chipset drivers it says with VGA that is because if you have a APU and don't update the driver before the flash you may not get video signal out of the motherboard after a BIOS flash. Since your not using a APU it will only install chipset drivers. After successful install and reboot then you can proceed to flash the BIOS.

Download, then unzip it, and run setup.exe in that folder and follow the prompts once finished, i recommend a restart to verify system is in working order, then you can boot into bios to do the flash.

Bladzy got a reaction from ddennis002 in 3000mhz to 3200mhz ram overclock??
Hells yeah, every bit of performance matters to me! If you could help with that, that would be awesome! Also I just realized that I might actually have F4-2800C17D-16GIS ram in my system (I ll check after opening it) I built it quite a while ago and forgot alrdy... But that would mean its alrdy running 200mhz more than it was advertised. Might it still work ? But even if that wont work I ll be building a system for a friend soon with the F4 3000 memory from above, so even if it doesnt work for my system all the information will come in handy at the point I built it for him.
