    the difference in gaming isnt from cores. its the fact the graphics card is emulated.
    I am surprised you can game at all inside a virtual machine without passing through the graphics card.

    nope, thats the idea behind gpu passthrough, whole gpu is dedicated to VM.

    Depending on how demanding the titles are you're trying to play the sweet-spot today is 4 cores. If you have AMD Simultaneous Multi-Threading then giving the VM 4C/8T would be ideal.
     
    You really should pass-through a GPU though if you happen to have two. Without one the rendering load is put on the CPU and lemmie tell you it wasn't designed for it.
