  1. Hi all, I have just upgraded from an old intel i5 2500K to a new Ryzen 2600. Since the upgrade I've got a lot of issues with the system crashing (BSOD), only 1 display working and general bad performance / glitching. I'm assuming the issues are due to old intel and chiset drivers handing around. Is there any way to remove all the old drivers from the windows install, so I can install the new drivers fresh without having to totallly wipe the windows install? I dont want to have to re-install all my programs, find and restore all my files etc if i can avoid it. Thanks,
  2. I’ve got a basic FreeNAS setup currently with 6 X 4tb dirves in a RAID Z2. Its now full so I wanted to add another 6 X 8th drives as another vdev then add it to the pool. However as my system can only take a MAXIMUM of 16GB RAM, I realised that this wouldn’t be enougth for the proposed 72Tb (48Tb avalable) pool given the reccomended 1GB/TB + 8GB system reccomendation. So I am in the position of having to look at buying a new server before I can expand the pool. My system is currently in a Fractal R5 with a few modifications allowing me to squeeze 12 drived into it, but if im upgrading anyway I thought i might as well try and future proof it a bit more. I have seen what seems like a good deal on a 24bay 4U system with 2 x Xeon E5-2630L v1 (Hex core Sandy Bridge from 2012) and 64GB RAM (8x8GB so expandable to 128Gb in the future) for £880. How does this sound to everyone else as a deal? Given the extra CPU hoursepower I would like to be able to run some other VMs on this sytem at the same time. I was planning on eperimenting with a hypervisor (not sure which) and doing hardware passthrough for the SAS cards to a freeNAS install, and then running other VMs. I think I remember Someone telling me there is a virtulisation bug with some of the old Xeons meaning the market if flooded with them because a lot of the big companies had to abandon them. The main question I have is does anyone know what this issue was and if the CPUs above where affected? If anyone has any other suggestions of comments I’d love to hear them.
  3. Hi everyone, I was hoping for some advice on the best way forward in developing a simple webpage with the ability to type in a product name and see the locations this item is kept in. The stock management system can run a weekly report that outputs as a spreadsheet listing all the items and the locations that these are kept in. I somehow need to turn this report into a webpage where you could type the first few letters of the item name and it will list all the different locations this is kept. What is the simplest way forward with this? I’m new to web development and looking forward to learning, but I don’t want to start by going off in the wrong direction. Thanks for any advice or help you can give.
  4. Hi all, I'm running FreeNAS 11.1, I have some files in a dataset called "Downloads", I'v trying to move them into the appropriate locations but I get an unusual error trying to move files from one datset to anouther when using my Mac. The the file browser on OSx gives the following message. "The Finder can't complete the operation because some of the data in "RamdomFile.mkv" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)" I can play back the files fine, but cant move them. If I try on a Windows 10 machine they will move BUT it takes a very long time. On the Mac moving files from dataset to dataset is almost instant, however on a Windows it takes a very long time depending on the file size. It appears to actually copy the file rather then just move it (fine of one or two files, but I'm trying to re-organise my whole storage box so if I do this for several terabytes this will take a very long time!) Any idea whats going on here? For background my setup is FreeNAS 11.1 RELEASE | Intel Xeon x3430 2.4GHz | Supermicro X8SLI-F | 16GB Crucial registered ECC RAM | IBM 1015M flashed to LSI 9211 IT mode | 6x 4TB WD RED drives in RAID Z2 1 volume is layedout as follows: Vault Downloads (dataset) incomplete (Folder) File1, File 2 etc... Media (dataset) Films (Folder) Music (Folder) My Documents (dataset) Backups (dataset)
  5. If its only for gaming then you could drop the CPU to the i5 as the addition of hyper threading on the i7 won't really benefit games.
  6. If you're in the USA then Puget systems handles spare parts for fractal. Here is a link to the R5 side panel: https://www.pugetsystems.com/store/item.php?cat=All+Categories&id=10879&com=d41d8cd9&que=%22Fractal%20Design%20Define%20R5 If your in Europe/UK then there is a different European company that does distribution here but cant remember who off the top of my head. If you do need it though I can probable find out, I'm just assuming you're in the US.
  7. I'm in the UK and I've always used scan.co.uk as my first choice. If you happen to live close to Bolton (part of Greater Manchester) then they have a store attached to their werehouse which is great for getting stuff the same day and customer service is always amazing. The store has changed a lot over the last few years and now you can go and actually get hands on with a lot of cool stuff in the showrooms. Also also dabs.com is good I'm my opinion.
  8. If you dont have your parts yet you could look for a motherboard with more SATA ports on it. ASRock to a great one with intergrated 4 or 8 core Averton CPU which also has 12 SATA ports on it. It can also be accessed remote over the network with IPMI. Both Linus and TekSyndicate have reviewed it and would be great for a home server. There are also lots of other boards out there with plenty of SATA ports. If you already have the motherboard then get something like a HBA card. This will give you extra SATA ports to connect drives and is usually cheaper than a RAID card which you could also use. It all depends on what parts you already have, how much you want to spend and what features you want to be using.
  9. Make sure you turn the system off now to prevent the data being overwritten until you can recover it! I'm sure someone here should be able to help you but if not I've found the guys over at the FreeBSD forums really helpful when I was looking at building my home server. https://forums.freebsd.org/ Wendle over at Tek Syndicate also did some very indepth videos on there youtube channel on recovering data from a failed FreeNAS. Not exactly your situation but it may be of some help as I'm sure he mentioned lots of tips and tools for recovering data. In the future I'd also consider setting up snapshots if you can so if something like this happens again then you can just roll back to a time before it was deleted and they don't take up a lot of space usually. Good luck with the recovery!
  10. I like the Define R5. I've got my system in one right now and its great.
  11. The biggest problem is that some games just will NOT run on a dual core. I'd say the best thing he could do would be to not buy the cooler and then spend more on the CPU and just use the stock cooler for now. He can always buy a better cooler later if he wants.
  12. In the US I think that Puget systems sells parts for fractal. I think that the Define S takes the same panel as the R5 which they stock here: https://www.pugetsystems.com/store/item.php?cat=Replacement+Parts&id=10880&com=d41d8cd9&que=fractal%20define I'd double check that first however or take a closer look around the site and see if they list the Define S parts seperatly. Hope this helps!
  13. Thanks for the info. I didn't think to look for used enterprise parts, that could save me a lot if I do want to buy a RAID card even if I don't buy a whole used system. What advantages does using Linux have over windows in your experience? I just had a look at you server from the link in your sig, very impressive! I assumed when you said you were using linux you meant something like freeNAS not ubuntu, I think that might be something I could try as its at least GUI based. Do you recommend going for hardware RAID?
  14. I looked at that case and really liked it. The only thing that put me off was as its ITX I'd need to pick between a RAID card and the potential to add in a dedicated NIC for better networking in the future e.g. 4xGbit with link aggregation. My current plans might be a bit overkill for my current needs so I could maybe go for something like that in the end.
  15. I've been using a old synology NAS in RAID 5 and external HDDs for years but its finally time for an upgrade. I've only been using it to store music, .avi videos and backups of family computers in the past, but now I'm looking at ripping my DVD and Blu-ray collection in high quality so I can free up some room and just stream them around the house using something like PLEX. I was looking at getting a synology 1815+ but thought that for the same price I could build a media server that would give me more flexibility and the ability to upgrade more easily in the future. I was looking at using a hardware RAID card for 8-16 drives and was hoping for some recommendations. Also any ideas on a case? I've been looking at the Fractal define R5 as it can hold 8 drives natively and a couple more in the 5.25 bays via adapters, with the possibility of trying to get hold of an extra drive cage to add into the extra mounting position at the bottom. Does anyone have any other suggestions of a case that can hold a large number of drives? My last problem is what OS to use? I've never been very comfortable with Linux so I'm not keen of the idea of freeNAS or Ubuntu and was just thinking of installing windows on it, but what version? Would their be any benefit in the getting a copy of windows server or would I be better off using a linux distro and just getting used to it? The house has a mix of mac and windows PC's as well as several iPads/iPhones and PS3 all that will need to be able to access it? An help and recommendations would be appreciated!
